Final Paper On the first day of classes we talked about the helper and the client. We talked about the different aspects of helping, problems in helping and why people seek help. A lot more then one may realize goes into helping and being a helper. By understanding how to be a good helper it will not only help in my future career, but my everyday life. As someone who wants to go into the helping profession, I have thought time and time again what being an outstanding helper means. To understand what an outstanding helper means can help others be a better helper by understanding what goes into being a helper and all of the different characteristics that one should have or display. Going over the process and the three steps, exploration, insight, and action were helpful. They helped me to understand that you don’t just start helping someone, you need to go through steps, although not always linear. Having these steps to know is a great guideline and will be resourceful as I get further into the helping profession. Another thing I found helpful, although not something we went into a lot of detail about were the five stages of change. The five stages of change are important because it is important to realize that people aren’t just all of a sudden ready to make a change. Change is a scary thing that not very many people want to deal with. By knowing there are stages, when talking with a client you can figure out what stage they are at. When you know what stages someone is in you are better able to understand how to help them and what they need. The last thing that I found helpful was talking about self-awareness. That is the knowledge of one’s own character, feelings, motives, and desires. This is important, because a person needs to be aware of themselves. We need to have a self-awareness, because it allows us to identify our own issues, biases, strengths and weaknesses. By identifying those aspects, we can be a better helper and better form a therapeutic
