Teamwork is a complex activity, so team members should work collaboratively to achieve a goal. Teamwork is powerfully influenced by the members’ knowledge, skills and attitudes (Nelsey & Brownie 2012, p. 199). Well-functioning teams increase work performance, job satisfaction and productivity, while decrease group conflict and staff absenteeism (Nelsey & Brownie 2012, p. 199). are six factors to develop teamwork: motivation, creativity, flexibility, attentiveness, decision-making and good communication (Wilkes et al. 2015, p. 289). Motivation derives from individual capacity and motivated members result in positive team outcomes, including task skills, coordination, team goal attainment, personal, and interpersonal relationship (Yi & Park 2015, p. 49). In order to become motivated staff, it is necessary to attempt to retain close relationship with colleagues, to have influence on others and to obtain satisfactory results (Yi & Park 2015, p. 47). Creativity is an innate ability and by possessing this ability, nurses can be innovative. Innovative nursing teams not only work creatively but also effectively transform new ideas into their colleagues (Tsai et al. 2013, p. 2649). To become an innovative member, accepting changes, enjoying work, maintaining positive emotions, and thinking independently need to be performed (Tsai et al. 2013, p. 2649). With regard to flexibility, research shows flexibility-promoting change practices increased job satisfaction and reduced their stress level, while flexibility-limiting change practices showed the opposite results (Newton et al. 2013, p. 2801). To promote flexibility of colleagues, creating respectful and supportive work environment play a key role (Newton et al. 2013, p. 2800).

Another important characteristic of a team member is the ability to be able to provide support to other team members even if this means taking on extra workload for a short-term period, while the other team member stabilizes herself and becomes available to take over the assignments left

When team three was given the semester project, there was not much in the way of forming team goals, we just stepped up to the cliff and jumped. As a team we took on each assignment when it was given, there was not much thinking about the big picture; instead, we just did the assignments as they came along. This hindered us in the fact that some of the sections in our project may not have been as deeply researched as they should have been. We also did not set very strong individual goals for the semester either, our code of cooperation seemed to be taken as a joke and no one was ever held responsible for the rules laid down at the beginning of the semester. The rules of being on time and contributing during meets were never enforced.
