After speaking with multiple members in the M-HEAL, I have been able to learn that PeriOperative is the premiere opportunity to combine my love for both business and medicine. Professionally, I aim to work in the business side of medical technology or healthcare and the fact that the PeriOperative team allows me to gain exposure to working in the field through an impactful project excites me greatly. I have family who has lived in the Dominican Republic so being able to give back to the community in whatever way possible is something I would really like to be a part of. My team consists of four other people besides myself, Lauren Chojnaki, Alexa-Louise Patnode, and Jacobe Loewen, and Ryan Tyriver. Together, we are tasked with the mission to complete a stakeholder analysis regarding a specific organization and their structure. For this project to be completed successfully, it is important that all team members are able to cooperate with one another and are able to use their different strengths to create the best end product.

I will contribute to the mission of the Nurse Corps Scholarship program by continuing to provide care to individuals in underserved communities. Medically underserved communities involve racial minorities, offenders and ex-offenders, crime or abuse victims, LGBTQ citizens, people with AIDS, and those that are economically disadvantaged. Bauer and Erdogen (2009) define a team as a “cohesive coalition of people working together to achieve mutual goals”. (p.213). According to McConnell (2006) , teams are united by a shared purpose , regardless of the team’s type, composition, degree of performance, or reason for being. Effectively coordinated and collaborative inter-professional teams are essential to the care and treatment of patients (Rowlands & Callen, 2013; Doyle, 2008; Ruhstaller, Roe, Thürlimann & Nicoll, 2006; Simpson & Patton, 2012, p. 300). Communication is a process of conferring information between individuals through use of speech, writing or various other means, and is critical to the success of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) (Higgs, McAllister & Sefton, 2012, p. 5; Rowlands & Callen, 2013; Sargeant, Loney & Murphy, 2008). An MDT must use multiple strategies to enhance communication and ensure their success (Doyle, 2008). An effective MDT generates opportunities that benefit healthcare, which is the reason for the recent dominance of inter-professional care in health practice (Simpson & Patton, 2012, p. 300; Rowlands & Callen, 2013). Many barriers prevent effective communication within inter-professional teams. Lack of communication within MDTs presents challenges to their success, leading to numerous consequences, including the failure of the MDT (London Deanery, 2012; Sargeant et al, 2008). Communication between professionals is the key factor underpinning the potential success or failure of inter-professional teams, the outcome of the functioning of MDTs will either benefit or impair care of patients.
The practice of using inter-professional teams in delivering care is not a new concept but current health policy requires professionals work within a multidisciplinary team Department of Health (2001) and entrenched in the Nursing and Midwifery Council (2008) Code. The principle focus of this essay is to discuss the importance of inter-professional collaboration in delivering effective health care and what challenges and constraints exist. The integration of a case study will give an insight into inter-professional collaboration in practice.
I know that by doing my job, no matter how different each patient may be, that I have made a difference in someone’s life. Taking into consideration the scope of the project before selecting the team to determine which individual is best to serve the team. If the team member treats his role as an independent one then communication will suffer, communication in the project is a key component during all team working. The lack of leadership, teams need strong leaders, without a strong leader the team may lose morale and enthusiasm towards the team. Role confusion and conflict can cause challenges in team working training the staff to over comes issues like this can help.
I had known for years that I wanted to work in the health care field, but I always believed it would be as a doctor. I watched for the first few years of my brother’s life as he struggled with different health challenges such as being born premature, having croup and breathing difficulty, and speech impairment. Watching my brother struggle and then being able to overcome these difficulties, as well as seeing other children around him who were not as fortunate, really pushed me even at a young age to make a difference. My family, both immediate and extended, were very supportive, and I felt a real positive push towards working hard to achieve that goal of working in health care. In high school, I was fortunate enough to do a cooperative placement at the Peterborough Regional Health Center’s Intensive Care Unit. The operating room is a place in the hospital where surgical operations are carried out in a sterile environment. When patients undergo surgery, their anxiety levels may vary. I have observed that the two patients who came in for robotics hernia repair were prepared for the surgery and their level of anxiety were not as pronounced. Their family members were with them and have provided them the support they needed. They were both calm and agreed to the surgical procedure with no doubt and were reassured by the staff that their safety is of utmost importance. The pre-surgery nurse, operating nurse and the post anesthesia care unit (recovery) nurse provided the patients with great level of assistance and education. Patients in the operating room were identified by age and the type of surgery they have to go through. Before the surgery, the patients were given one (1) gram of Ancef (cefazolin) which is an anti-infective indicated for perioperative prophylaxis (Davis, p. 284).
I hope to impact this professional with my knowledge and expertise. I am now in school again to further my knowledge of this profession. It may seem old for some. However, for me learning has no age and boundaries as I continued to gain more knowledge and perhaps someday I can be a mentor for my peers. I hope to someday work In Risk management where I can continue to fight and argue the rights of my patients and peers whom all deserve a sense of dignity and self-worth. My contribution to this profession includes providing and promoting care with a holistic approach that is inclusive of the mind, body, spiritual belief practices because the patients I see as being more than just another patient in need of my care. My main contribution is to focus on the kidney disease and hypertension population to enhance patient outcomes. After many years of being in this profession, my first long-term goal will be to become a nursing instructor. Like many instructors who do it to pass on their knowledge, I want to be able to give back to the nursing community in some way. It is important for someone, like myself, who is thoroughly invested into nursing education to dedicate time teaching the next generation of nurses. Like the great professors I had in my undergraduate studies, I aspire to be an inspiring educator someday.
