It is impressive to me as a former Head Start teacher to know that since 1965 Head Start has helped over thirty million children;However, We hardly hear of success stories from Alumni of Head Start. I wonder if the program is as successful as Head Start claims it to be. I have been in Head Start in different functions since 2001 as a parent and as a center Staff. I know for a fact that teachers work hard to teach the children, spending money out of their own pocket to be able to provide the children with quality developmentally appropriate activities. As a former Head Start teacher I worked hard and did not receive the monetary benefits of my degree that I was encouraged to obtained before 2013. I feel that Head Start staff are mostly all underpaid
for the work that they do. I think that the overall quality of early years education interventions needs attention. The children need to be taught and teachers need the time to teach instead of doing paper work all day. Head Start also need to pay attention to the “fit” between what families need and what is offered. I have seen parents with a nice car obtain a bus pass just because it is offered and easy to get the services; therefore, parents that really need the reasource are not able to obtain it. On the positive side, for some children and some measures, EHS programs are able to compensate for disadvantages in the home environment. For other children and other measures, they were able to “work to their potential” the home environment’s strengths, boosting the benefits of a positive family life. On the negative side, the question is how to make these programs “fit” for some of the more vulnerable children, such as those from homes lacking in emotional warmth. I think there are challenges to improving quality and improving “fit,” Government budgets under pressure create a major challenge for those who want to see early years education grow and reach and increase in quality. And it can be difficult to know how to assess “fit” and quality, given that “there are no agreed-upon standards and measures of quality to guide some program development.”. Centers try to implement the long list of Head Start Performance standards to no avail because if you lack the resources and are putting strain on your staff to do more than their job description. How is Head Start going to be a success.
Vignette two: Families who previously had children enrolled in a nearby preschool have told you stories of what happened to their children in that center. They describe dirty sheets on the cribs, harsh punishments including withholding food, and ratios of twenty children to one adult. One day you drive by and see a lot covered with asphalt and dry grass. There are a few rusting pieces of playground equipment. Several children are standing along the chain link fence looking at the cars going by. There are no adults in sight.
My first observation was at Head Start. I talked to Tracey Claflin about some of the principles they use in their program and how they use them. I wasn’t able to observe the children directly because my TB skin test results came up positive. Tracey explained to me that because my results were positive I couldn’t meet children or be in the same room as the children. Due to this, I had to make some arrangements to instead speak with Tracey about some principles she has seen and that they follow. I met with her for an hour discussing the principles and how they were used in the Head Start program. One of the principles she said was highly important for Head Start was principle number 2. She explained that when there is enough time and opportunities to spend time with a child individually the caregiver puts full attention on one child. She explained that they like to focus attention on a child throughout the day so that the child doesn’t feel left out. She says that alone time for a child with a caregiver is usually tummy time. They allow the infants and toddlers to roll around and look at the carpet designs. Tracey explained to me how they asses each child through this quality time that the caregiver and the child have alone. This quality time the caregiver has with the child is important,

Early childhood education, although constantly evolving, was actually established and practiced as early on as the times of Ancient Greece and Rome. The foundation that early childhood education is based upon is to instill in children the skills needed to succeed later on in life, while making sure young children enjoy their time in schooling. Throughout chapter 3 in the textbook Who Am I in the Lives of Children, the reader is capable of evaluating just how greatly the methods for teaching today’s youth have evolved and changed for the better.
The Head Start program is extremely beneficial to communities across the United States of America. The program set goals, continues to accomplish them, remedies educational setbacks for low-income families and children and raises debates about the success of such programs which only pushes them to strive harder to reach their goals.
In the 1980s, child care was back on the national agenda due to the education reform movement (Tejada, 2010). Tejada further disclosed that several states even launched pre-kindergarten programs for disadvantaged children. Why the Need for Universal Preschool Two-thirds of 4-year-old children in the United States attend preschool, as well as 40% of 3-year-olds (Tejada, 2010). Half of those are enrolled in a public program, such as state prekindergarten (preK), Head Start, or special education, and the other half are in a private program (Adams, 2009). Despite such a large enrollment of children in these programs, there is still a handful of children who are missing out on obtaining a head start in obtaining a good quality education.... ...
The Head Start program was created to address this shortcoming that some children face and to catch them up with their more advantaged peers. (Garces, 2002, p. 999) Head Start was originally designed to provide a nurturing environment that would provide children with preschool education, positive social interaction, and nutritious snacks and meals to help compensate for the lack of those things in the children’s lives.
Childcare or “daycare” is one of the most commonly used resources among Americans in the United States. There are many options for childcare that parents could choose from. The students are to be signed in by a parent or guardian for safety precautions, and shows that the child was signed into school. As a visitor, I am to sign myself in, this shows I was in the classroom, at what time was I there, and reason for visiting the classroom.

When seeking a career, it is important to see the future growth of the job and the salary. It will determine how difficult it will be to find placement. Early childhood educators are the first people to truly show an impact on children and will always be needed. The projected growth of early childhood lead educators between 2014 to 2024 is 7% (Elrick). They will be needed in the upcoming future and the projected growth is said to go up even further. The median annual salary in the United States is $28,120 (Elrick). Many people do not choose this career because the salary is very low compared to the amount of hours spent. Early childhood educators spend a lot of time and energy for these children. They also have to understand that their pay is considerably low compared to many other
There are many documented theories about early childhood development, contemporary research still concurs with some of these theories. It suggests, however, that we should be thinking more holistically, taking into consideration; respect for diversity, the wider community and equity, play based curriculums, intentional teaching and ongoing reflective practices when planning for optimal educational experiences for children (Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, 2009). I acknowledge that ongoing professional learning and reflective practices are a key element of the Early Years Learning Framework (DEEWR, 2009). I accredit working and collaborating with other teachers, families and local communities collectively contribute
