The Head Start program is a beneficial one that helps youth overcome educational
setbacks. In order for one to understand the benefits of the program one must know what
its goals are, how its goals continue to be accomplished, what specific setbacks are remedied from it and how others feel about it.
Head Start is a comprehensive child development program that has an overall goal
to prepare children from low-income families for school (The Administration For Children And Families, 2002). To prepare a child for school the program has the goal of
meeting educational, health, social service, and parental needs. “Head Start also wants to help bring about a greater degree of social competence in these children (Mallory and Goldsmith, 2002).” The program has met a goal of impacting child development and day care services, and the increasing availability of services offered to low-income families and their children (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2002).
There are many factors that play a part in the accomplishment of these goals.
Head Start meets educational needs by ensuring that each child is exposed to different learning experiences that nurse intellectual, social, and emotional growth (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2002). The children are in an atmosphere for gaining knowledge but at the same time are placed with peers whom they can build social skills and form relationships with.
Health needs are met due to the program’s emphasis on early detection of medical problems. Each child in Head Start becomes involved in a health program. If that is not the case plenty of people are still familiar with the name and concepts of the show Sesame Street.
The Head Start program is extremely beneficial to communities across the United States of America. The program set goals, continues to accomplish them, remedies educational setbacks for low-income families and children and raises debates about the success of such programs which only pushes them to strive harder to reach their goals.
It started out as a moneymaking venture a rock concert, pure and simple. An attempt to duplicate or maybe even surpass the success of Monterey Pop, which attracted 50,000 people two years earlier. The Woodstock Festival was expected to attract 50,000 to 100,000 people.
My first observation was at Head Start. I talked to Tracey Claflin about some of the principles they use in their program and how they use them. I wasn’t able to observe the children directly because my TB skin test results came up positive. Tracey explained to me that because my results were positive I couldn’t meet children or be in the same room as the children. Due to this, I had to make some arrangements to instead speak with Tracey about some principles she has seen and that they follow. I met with her for an hour discussing the principles and how they were used in the Head Start program. One of the principles she said was highly important for Head Start was principle number 2. She explained that when there is enough time and opportunities to spend time with a child individually the caregiver puts full attention on one child. She explained that they like to focus attention on a child throughout the day so that the child doesn’t feel left out. She says that alone time for a child with a caregiver is usually tummy time. They allow the infants and toddlers to roll around and look at the carpet designs. Tracey explained to me how they asses each child through this quality time that the caregiver and the child have alone. This quality time the caregiver has with the child is important,
Woodstock became a symbol for a whole generation by the coming together of the political environment, the pop culture, and the current events of the time. The ‘baby boomers’ were searching for ways to separate themselves from their parents’ generation and see themselves as a more loving, compassionate, tolerant group of people. Woodstock came at a time of the youths desperation for authority and gave them beliefs they could live with. They wanted to revolt against the political chaos that they had been enduring during this memorable decade, and Woodstock was a symbol of this for the youth.
The middle-class youth made up the bulk of the counterculture, so they had the leisure time to focus their attention on political issues in America. At the time, the counterculture rejected the cultural standards of the United States and those older than them, specifically the initial support for the Vietnam War. The politics and government history force held a high influence during this time of change. The Vietnam War devastated the young adult population and families of those who enlisted. Some Americans found the movement to reflect American ideals of free speech and equality, while others thought of it to reflect pointless rebellious acts and very unpatriotic. After 1963, many social influences changed what peopled were viewing as popular music. The assassination of Kennedy, war in Vietnam, and the Civil Rights Movement all greatly impacted the mood of American culture and how the music began to reflect change. The “British Invasion” was a time period in which many British bands and artists came to the United States, and excelled extremely well. The Woodstock Music and Art Fair was a festival known as an “Aquarian Exposition of three days.” For an audience of 400,000 people, 32 acts performed outdoors. Woodstock was a crucial moment in music history as it changed the world of rock ‘n’ roll. The festival connected the 1960s counterculture generation through the power of music. The Woodstock Ventures were known as Michael Lang, Artie Kornfield, John Roberts, and Joel Rosenman. Between the four, they collaberated on many important contacts in the music industry.. With their contacts they were able to get 30 plus performers to show up and perform. Artie Kornfield had the most experience out of the four. The rest had little experience to get things done. Arnold Skolnick designed the poster of a guitar and dove which ended up being a memorable send off for the concert. The event itself had cost about $2.5 million to finance. The oldest of the four, John Roberts supplied most of the money from a trust fund he had. The famous poster of Woodstock was created by Arnold Skolnick, and consisted the famous dove and guitar logo. John Roberts, Joel Rosenman, Artie Kornfield, and Michael Lang held the rock ‘n’ roll festival to raise money to start the construction of a recording studio near Woodstock, New York. Roberts and Rosenman financed the festival, while Land promoted the concert. Land had organized a smaller festival, Miami Pop, the year before, so he was well qualified. Roberts and Rosenman were entrepreneurs. Before Woodstock they were in the process of building a larger recording studio in Manhattan. Land and Kornfeld were also involved with the recording studio, but were advised by their lawyer to recommend constructing a smaller studio in Woodstock, New York. Roberts and Rosenman were excited about the “Studio-in-the-Woods” proposal and decided to organize a concert featuring the kind of artists that would be recognized in the Woodstock area for the studio’s funding. The Head Start Center at Martin Luther King school is a great way to learn about the three domains of development of cognitive, phsycal, social and emotional. The observation took place towards the end of the school year. This observation consisted of observing an early childhood boy on April twenty-two, twenty fourteen, named Anth, with the age of 4 years, 2 months. The Head Start Center had a classroom that consisted of 16 children, between the ages of three to five years old, and a ratio of eight to one. I conducted my observation for a period of about half an hour in room 52 at Martin Luther King Jr Elementary School. My first impression of the classroom was a good surprise. The classroom reflects a great environment for a place for preschoolers to develop. It is an area where the children, are in a soothing room full of brilliant colors, and a childproof area where it is safe to leave a three to five year old for the day.
