Vignette two: Families who previously had children enrolled in a nearby preschool have told you stories of what happened to their children in that center. They describe dirty sheets on the cribs, harsh punishments including withholding food, and ratios of twenty children to one adult. One day you drive by and see a lot covered with asphalt and dry grass. There are a few rusting pieces of playground equipment. Several children are standing along the chain link fence looking at the cars going by. There are no adults in sight. 1. What core value(s) apply in this situation? There are only a select few in this situation that apply to this situation. Are the children being valued? No they are not. Are the teachers or daycare takers focusing on the children's development and learning? No, they are not. Is the daycare faculty …show more content…
Based on your analysis of the guidance from the Code what do you think "the good early childhood educator" should do in this situation? As a mandated reporter with the code of ethics we are required by law that if we know of any situation putting children in harm or danger we are to report it to the proper community authorities. When we know of an early education center who is failing to meet laws and regulations we shall report it to the proper authority's. When an agency, that is to protect children from harm, is failing we must also report them to the proper authorities. We are to base decisions for children based on multiple sources of information in this case you have yourself and many concerned parents coming and telling you about this, it would seem to be probable cause to report the daycare to the proper authorities. After talking to more people about the situation, maybe some co-workers, I would go to the proper authorities and report the day care center. I would also inform the concerned parents about the situation being handled, and I would also give them some tools for if that were to ever happen again, maybe a few
The NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct was developed to uphold the application of core values, ideals, and principles to assist teachers’ decision-making about ethical issues. The Core Values of the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct is based on the foundation of the field's commitment to young children. It is noteworthy that all seven of the Code's Core Values directly address our commitment to children:
There is a problem in Texas impacting children’s futures; many childcare centers and homes are not providing children with quality care. In an article about cost and quality in Texas childcare, child development experts Susan Eitel and Joyce Nuner quote a study stating “that [nationally] only 10% of infants and toddlers are in high quality [childcare] programs” (34). The term ratio describes the number of children one caregiver is watching. This number is one of the major factors in the quality of a childcare program. Organizations such as the National Association for the Education of Young Children know as NAEYC release recommendations regarding ratios and accredit programs based on their compliance. Childcare centers and homes must comply with certain minimum standards enforced by Texas regarding ratios; however, these standards often set the bar lower than recommendations made by these early childhood experts. The current standards in Texas do not ensure that all young children receive quality care; for this reason, the Texas Department of Family Protective Services should strengthen the minimum standards regarding ratios to better regulate the quality of care children receive.
The purpose of this posting is to explain what privacy and confidentiality mean and then review the case study about the options of reporting abuse in a child and what principles of ethics are involved with it.
Childcare or “daycare” is one of the most commonly used resources among Americans in the United States. There are many options for childcare that parents could choose from. They have many choices for childcare, ranging from: in-home care, childcare facilities, after school or government-funded Head Start programs. . “Head Start is a federally funded governmental program with the explicit goal of preparing underprivileged children for primary education” (Conley). This program is another option for the pre-k program. The cost of childcare has risen dramatically over the past year, and no one really knows whom to blame for it. The government offers families subsidies for childcare, but that is only if your income is low. But, what about the hard working, middle class families, that are still struggling to pay the high cost of childcare without government assistant? How will they provide childcare for their kids?
A normal day for a daycare facility is to have many classrooms full of students like a typical public school; however, they are younger children and are being supervised by an adult. That adult is responsible for, on average, four to ten students at any given time, ages ranging from zero to six. During that time, a lot can happen. These busy workers have many responsibilities throughout the day. The most important one is safety. Because these children are so young, they are also adventurous therefore need a lot of attention. Daycare workers have to spend much time supervising these children while performing other tasks throughout the day. Not only do children need to be supervised to be safe, but they also need to have a safe, clean and presentable environment that the daycare workers of the facility are to maintain. One way to keep things clean is to sanitize, in which is a big task of these workers. Children are always putting things in their mouth and then passing it off to other kids; therefore, sanitation is a big deal in these types of facilities. Another responsibility that daycare providers have are to enforce rules. When rules are broken, these providers are to then enforce discipline policies. These can sometimes become an issue seeing that these providers are not the parents of the children thus they have to consult with the parents on certain discipline techniques to use on specific children. On the other hand, these providers are similar to parents in the sense that they wash children's clothing and clean up after every child. In addition to all the other responsibilities, daycare providers also have to maintain current, accurate and confidential client files per child. These files are to consist of observations and r...
One type of childcare that many are familiar with is non-maternal. “Non-maternal care is defined as the care of a child by someone other than the child’s mother for at least 10 hours a week on a regular basis” (Peng and Robbins, 9). The purpose of all, if not most childcare centers is to provide children with the appropriate care and education that will prepare them for the next level of education. Seeing as “six out of every ten mothers of children under age six are employed” there is definitely a need and possibly a demand for childcare centers (Lynn, 2). There is, however, one big mistake people often make when thinking of childcare. Childcare and daycare, no matter how similar they may seem, are not the same. A daycare is simply there to take care and watch over the child, while childcare centers act more as the school before actual grade school by prepping kids ...
Imagine that the safety, and health of a one year-old rests on your shoulders, it may not be fully your responsibility, but you are an important part of it. Now multiply that feeling times two or three, that is a pretty big weight to carry on your shoulders. In today’s society, since most of the time both parents must work, daycares are a major part of someone’s life. In the past, the idea of someone leaving their child with a person who wasn't their mother, or even their family was unimaginable. There are two major types or Daycares, Child Care Centers and Family Child Care Homes. Something that both facilities have in common, is that they can be stressful at times, but a Family Child Care Home, provides various opportunities that Child Care Centers do not.
While walking through the front gates of County elementary school, you see children of all ages playing while they wait for the school bell to ring. Walking to the classroom that I will be observing you see students with their parent’s line up waiting to get signed in. The students are to be signed in by a parent or guardian for safety precautions, and shows that the child was signed into school. As a visitor, I am to sign myself in, this shows I was in the classroom, at what time was I there, and reason for visiting the classroom.
High quality daycares are scarce to come by these days, however they are out there. There are quite a few right in this area. It takes a lot for a family to have to actually go into a facility and observe for a day. I know if I was a parent I would want my child in the best daycare possible. Working at a daycare for about 2 1/2-3 years, I know a lot that they have to offer and I also know how they can be run in a negative way. A lot of the media stories are due to something huge happening to a child and then people start to back away from daycares not realizing that not all facilities are like that. The parent checklist is such a good tool for parents to use. They really should take it to their advantage and use the tool as much as possible.
Parent and Child benefit from childcare and many ways. According to DCF, “Florida Statues require child care providers not exceed the following staff-to-child ratios children under 12 months: 1 to 4”, (www.dcf.state.fl.us, 2014). With this said, parents do not have to worry about their child being in a classroom with too many children. Every classroom has a ratio depending the ages. The caregiver can divide her time equally between all the children. A caregiver is to keep the children safe and cannot leave the child alone ever. They are to keep a childcare checklist and report any accidents and incidents to their supervisors and parents. It is important for them to maintain
It is very important to prepare children for school and make sure they improve their learning on manners and the morality of their actions. If a daycare is run out of a home where the employees do not meet the supervisor standards they day cares tend to be less of an educational or learning program and more of a babysitting format. It is very important that the format of the day care provide learning activities, attentiveness to children’s need, and emotional
Daycare is very effective with helping children to become sociable and break out of their shells. There are other children at the facilities for the child to
She points to how only one type of care would receive funding. Instead, she believes a more fair system would give parents a variety of options to meet their needs. In turn, she claims that many parents do not want to use licensed child care facilities, to which she references the subsidized daycare program in Quebec where many parents still choose not to send their children. Rather, many families choose to hire friends or relatives to look after their kids. Smith then proceeds to criticize the studies that show a positive correlation between childcare and later educational performance that Krashinsky referenced in his argument. She argues that the only children studied were at-risk youth, and that there would inevitably be positive progress as any form of care is better than “mayhem”, and therefore cannot be used as justification for the nation as a whole. She also criticizes the notion that childcare centers are the best form of care, because they are the easiest to regulate. While they might lead to a standard level of care, this standardized treatment could lead to a lack of development. Consequently, caregivers have neither the same justification, nor interest to provide specialized care for children, which would result in the greatest possible outcome, while parents do. Thus, according to
1. Address the situation immediately. The longer you wait, the more time your child could be off school.
The majority of infections in daycare centers are respiratory infections (Fairchok et al.,). This infection is very common and usually self treatable. It would not be weird for a child to catch one. Every child is going to bring home their own viruses and bacteria to spread and share with the family no matter if they are at a daycare center or not. Parents mindset is their children are getting sick from daycare but really they can get sick anywhere they go. Instead of parents trying to keep children out of daycare centers to prevent sickness, they should be focusing on finding the safest place for their child to attend. If a child is at daycare and starts possessing any symptoms of illness, that child may be excused from any activities and isolated from other children. Also the parents must be contacted right away about the illness (Revisor of Statues 23). Daycare centers are showing the right way to protect children from other children 's illness. The children 's toys and the daycare will be cleaned and disinfected to try to stop the spread of the illness if possible. When children are sick before coming to the daycare center, they should not come that day until twenty-four hours after the symptoms have cleared. Daycares centers follow the right policies by keeping the children at home, otherwise their kids would come to the centers and infect other
