The hero’s journey follows eight different steps. All of these eight steps contribute to the story and make them interesting to us. An example of the hero’s journey is the popular Disney movie “Mulan.” “Mulan” follows all of the steps of the hero’s journey starting with the ordinary world. The ordinary world showcase the main character in a normal setting and the audience can see the situation or dilemma
The Hero’s Journey is a basic template utilized by writers everywhere. Joseph Campbell, an American scholar, analyzed an abundance of myths and literature and decided that almost all of them followed a template that has around twelve steps. He would call these steps the Hero’s Journey. The steps to the Hero’s Journey are a hero is born into ordinary circumstances, call to adventure/action, refusal of call, a push to go on the journey, aid by mentor, a crossing of the threshold, the hero is tested, defeat of a villain, possible prize, hero goes home. The Hero’s Journey is more or less the same journey every time. It is a circular pattern used in stories or myths.
The Hero’s Journey is an ancient archetype that we find throughout our modern life and also, in the world of literature.Whether metaphorical or real, the journey that a character goes on shows not only the incredible transformation of the hero but it also gives them their life meaning. It is the ultimate human experience and it reflects on every aspect of life. Take Logan, also known as Wolverine, from the X-Men movie as an example. His adventure starts with “The Call,” which is the first step of the Hero’s Journey. This step happens due to the realization of imbalance and injustice that the character has in their life. Logan steps into the first stage of the pattern but is hesitant to start his adventure because he does not know what and
Abanes, Richard. "Harry Potter: Harmless Christian Novel or Doorway to the Occult?" Interview. The Christian Broadcasting Network. N.p., n.d. Web. 22 Sept. 2015. In this interview, Author Richard Abanes provides information to parents about Harry Potter and the concerns and dangers with modern day fantasy literature. Supplying a priest’s expert opinion, this interview discusses children’s susceptibleness to outside influences and the different types of fantasy literature. Its unyielding, yet respectable position, including references to other Christian fantasy series such as The Chronicles of Narnia, will be advantageous for my argument in that it provides an alternative viewpoint from my own. Being a counterargument, this source can be used to help shape an argument in rebuttal of the points made in this argument. Sources that argue that Harry Potter does indeed contain Christian aspects will be helpful in a rebuttal of this source.
What is a hero’s cycle? To start off, the hero’s cycle is a quest pattern that all hero (someone who embarks on a quest) follow. The hero’s cycle is found in almost all myths, legends and novels. A great example of the hero’s cycle could be seen in the novel Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The main character, Harry Potter, goes through three important stages of the cycle, the departure, initiation, and the return stage. Theses stages have subdivisions which not only contributes to the growth of the hero but also lays out what a hero goes through in order to achieve his/her quest.
Coming-of-age stories are loved by people of all ages, but especially by younger readers who can relate to the hero’s journey. They can follow the maturation of the main character and grow up with them. They can also learn about the importance of friends to help in the process of growing up. One of the most iconic books that teaches such a lesson is the coming-of-age novel “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” by J. K. Rowling. In this book, Harry’s travelling companions, Ron and Hermione, who accompany the hero in his journey, complement his skills and qualities to help him win the final battle against Lord Voldemort.
Throughout the novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K Rowling, Harry Potter has a miserable childhood. At the beginning of the book, Harry is an orphan boy who born and grows up in a relative family call the Dursley. The Dursley’s family always being mean to him because Harry is different than anyone else, he is a wizard. He receives all the negligence and child abuse from them. A little boy who lives in a difficult condition can easily give up himself and may treat others with the same experienced that he learned. However, Harry wants to live his life different than the Dursley’s family so he stands up not only for himself but for others. He uses his internal strengths to pass through all struggles and become a hero.
In movies, novels, and life, people are named as heroes. The heroes we establish and the heroes we recognize, however, may not meet the criteria for a mythic hero. A mythic hero ventures forth on his journey, and comes forth from the hero’s path to greatness. Joseph Campbell, a mythologist who studied many of the great human myths and religious tales, realized, in studying these myths and tales, that there were certain steps that every hero went through. Campbell called this “The Hero’s Journey”; it is based on Carl Jung's idea that all human beings have an archetype. After Campbell studied a lot of the great myths and realized this pattern, he published his findings in his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Ever since then, authors have used “The Hero’s Journey” as an outline to tell their stories. “It is important to note that not all of these individual steps are present in every hero’s tale, nor is it important that they be in this exact order” (Vogler 20). The Hero with a Thousand Faces gives a sense of significance as it looks into the inner mind and soul. The author, Joseph Campbell, performs two extraordinary accomplishments: compelling his readers that myth and dream, those are the most effective and everlasting forces in life and a unification of mythology and psychoanalysis with a gripping narrative. One well-known example of “The Hero’s Journey” from popular culture is the Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, by J.K. Rowling. In the novel, Harry Potter, the main character, is the chosen one and “The Hero’s Journey” applies to his life from the moment he is attacked by He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named as a baby.
How to Defeat Death How do you manage to survive the Killing curse (the Avada Kedavra curse) performed by the most powerful wizard of all time and just hang out with a scar on the left side of your forehead? J.K. Rowling explores many different topics throughout the Harry Potter series. One of the main topics would be friendship. J.K. Rowling uses Harry Potter and Voldemort as complementary characters that show the extreme differences in two of the most talented wizards that ultimately led one to a victory due to the power of friendship. Early in the book Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, we learn about the difficult childhood of Harry as a wizard in the Muggle world.
Dear Reader, First, the reason I chose this topic is, I finished reading the fourth, fantasy novel in the Harry Potter series. The book was so exceedingly inspiring, I thought it was a good idea if I did my topic, the Magic of Harry Potter. Plus, due to over 600 million copies, as well as a positive influence on movies, Harry Potter has impacted my friends and family members. Also, none of my peers seemed like they would do this as their topic, maybe because they think they already know and others know what an amazing job J.K. Rowling did for inspiring addictive reading. My essential question is “How did Harry Potter impact the world of literature?”
Events leading up to the time turner In the book Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Albus Potter takes ma ny actions to be in the possession of the time turner. All these actions have an affect on the story and play a big role. It all starts on page 34 when Amos Diggory comes to Harry’s house in the middle of the night.
Literature has made a major impact on popular culture and has evolved throughout history and can be dated back to ancient written works around six thousand years ago. More recently, literature has effected society as a whole by the accessibility of it on an international level. In addition to that, literature is influenced by the advancements in technology and will continue to in the future. This paper will be demonstrating how the Harry Potter books series explores the four distinctive characteristics of popular culture.
In the novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, J.K Rowling introduces her main character, a 11-year old British wizarding student, Harry Potter. Harry is described to have jet-black hair, green eyes, and to be pale, skinny, and bespectacled. While Harry was still and infant, he was responsible for the downfall of a dark and powerful wizard, as a result his name is known to everyone wizarding world. In the novel, despite all the fame and admiration he has, Harry only recently finds out he is a wizard, and that he is famous. Therefore Harry feels burdened and insecure with all the attention he is receiving, and at the end of the novel, he proves himself to be an incredible wizard. Throughout the novel we learn Harry is brave, curious and modest.
One of the most read series in all literature is Harry Potter. The seven-book succession has sold over 400 million copies and has been translated into over sixty languages. What is it that makes this series so wildly famous? What is it about the boy who lived that makes frenzied readers flock to their local bookstore at midnight on the day of the release to buy the latest installment? How is a story set in a world that doesn’t exist about wizards, witches, magic, and mystical creatures so popular? The series has been able to earn its spot on the New York Times Bestseller list and has granted author J.K. Rowling multiple awards because it is relatable. It is not the setting or the events in the plot of the story that we relate to. We relate to what Harry, his friends, mentors, teachers, caretakers, and even enemies feel. Harry is in a lot of ways exactly like us. He represents some of the good characteristics that all of us have as well as the bad. The series as a whole, is about one thing that is stressed over and over again in the novels, love. The Harry Potter series is one of the most read sequences of novels because the central theme is love and self-sacrifice, and readers are looking for a novel that shows them just that.
