The Hero’s Journey in Mulan In this world that we live on there are a plethora of cultures and people but one thing that brings all these cultures together is a certain story base, the hero’s journey. The hero’s journey has been around for the longest time and many commonly known stories that we know today are based off of the hero’s journey. The hero’s journey follows eight different steps. All of these eight steps contribute to the story and make them interesting to us. An example of the hero’s journey is the popular Disney movie “Mulan.” “Mulan” follows all of the steps of the hero’s journey starting with the ordinary world. The ordinary world showcase the main character in a normal setting and the audience can see the situation or dilemma She ends up being surrounded by groups of disgusting men. She is completely out of place and everything around her is foreign. She is the only girl and she is the only one who knows about it there for she can not even go into the lake and bathe when all the other men do; she has to find time on her own. This camp is completely unknown to Mulan but eventually she adapts and figures out how to work around being a secret female. Along the way, Mulan does have help for two creatures. First, she gets her luck from a pet cricket that her grandmother gave to her. Cri-kee the cricket has apparently been in the family for ages and has been the families good luck charm. Cri-kee is always on Mulan’s shoulder and is there to encourage her and help her make smart decisions. The other mythical creature that is in Mulan is Mushu. Mushu is a little red dragon that accidentally got assigned to Mulan to help protect her. In the story, Mushu also provides comic relief. Mushu is always there for Mulan and tries to help her make the right Mulan now respects herself and the whole country of China respects her. She overcome the insecurities of thinking that she will never amount to what her family wants of her. The movie “Mulan” follows the basic hero’s journey pathway. None of the steps are missed and everything is pretty clearly laid out. Author and directors and producers do this in children's movies so that they can grasp what is going on. They do not want something so complex that it does not make sense. Most Disney movies follow the simple pathway of the Hero’s journey so kids like the movie because they understand it. This also helps with sales of the movie. Kids will beg there parents to buy movies and stories that they love and understand. Overall, “Mulan” does an outstanding job of portraying the popular story telling of the hero’s journey. Creators are still, to this day, using the easy pathway of the hero’s journey because it is easy to understand as long as all of the steps are met. This brings people of all sorts of cultures and religions to come together to sit back and enjoy a story
