How to Defeat Death
How do you manage to survive the Killing curse (the Avada Kedavra curse) performed by the most powerful wizard of all time and just hang out with a scar on the left side of your forehead? J.K. Rowling explores many different topics throughout the Harry Potter series. One of the main topics would be friendship. J.K. Rowling uses Harry Potter and Voldemort as complementary characters that show the extreme differences in two of the most talented wizards that ultimately ultimately led one to a victory due to the power of friendship.
Early in the book Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, we learn about the difficult childhood of Harry as a wizard in the Muggle world. He is depicted as an outsider. Harry can make strange things happen that he cannot understand. This goes as well for Voldemort. We learn more about his childhood in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The main difference is that once Harry is at Hogwarts, he makes friends. He surrounded himself with those who seem to be friendly wizards and witches. When Harry meets Draco Malfoy for the first time at Madame Malkin's Robe shop, he doesn’t seem to like him because the way Malfoy acts made Harry “strongly reminded of Dudley” (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone 60; ch. 5). Both Malfoy and Dudley can be classified as bullies. When Harry mets Malfoy for the second time, which is on the train to Hogwarts, Malfoy offers his friendship to Harry by telling him he shouldn’t be hanging out with “ the wrong sort” (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone 81; ch. 6). Harry is now convinced he didn’t want him as a friend so he chose Ron. It was only towards the end of the book, Harry and Ron get closer to Hermione which fans refer them as being the Gold...

...nd the Deathly Hallows 391; ch. 20) but Harry corrects him and says, “He must’ve known you’d always want to come back.” (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 391; ch. 20).
Voldemort will always be more powerful than Harry, though he never will have the support and strength that Harry had from his friends. This is how Harry was able to defeat the Dark Lord. According to Voldemort,"There is nothing worse than death"(Harry Potter and the order of the phoenix 814; ch. 36). Dumbledore tells him differently, "You are quite wrong. Indeed, your failure to understand that there are things much worse than death has always been your greatest weakness" (Harry Potter and the order of the phoenix 814; ch. 36). Friendship cannot exist without loyalty and there cannot be love without friendship. In this case, Voldemort could not understand any of these emotions or qualities.
