In 1946 two brothers, Ben and Truitt Cathy, opened a diner in Atlanta Georgia called the Dwarf House Grill. The Dwarf House served a variety of typical grill food that included everything from burgers to hot dogs. All of that changed in 1961 when a poultry supplier stopped buy and sold Mr. Cathy chicken breast that were too large for the trays that they typically cooked the chicken on. Truitt Cathy decided that he did not want to throw out the chicken so he breaded the chicken and put it in the pressure fryer. He realized that he could cook the chicken in the same amount of time that it took to cook a hamburger and it tasted great. He had hamburger buns and pickles in the restaurant already and this is how the first chicken sandwich was made. In 1967 the first Chick-Fil-A store was opened in Atlanta’s Greenbrier Shopping Center and in 1986 the first freestanding franchise was opened. Today there are more than one thousand seven hundred Chick-Fil-A restaurants in thirty nine states. One of the ways that Chick-Fil-A has been able to make their company a success is through their unique approach to customer service. They are able to provide excellent customer service by turning individuals into team players. Teams can be seen in the hiring process, community involvement, national sponsorship, knowing what customers want, and cooperate culture. All of these different teams lead to excellence in customer service.
Most people are trapped into believing that Canada is a very diverse place to live as it welcomes many cultures, but do not realize what happens to their culture when they have lived in Canada after time. Throughout the stories Simple Recipes by Madeleine Thien and A Short History of Indians in Canada by Thomas King, the authors tell the actions of what is happening in the characters lives to show the stripping of other cultures when they come to Canada. These two stories reveal how difficult it can be to be a person with a different culture existing in Canadian society.
According to Tyson Foods, Tyson was established in the 1930s during the Great Depression by John W. Tyson. He began hand-delivering chicken to make a living. During World War II, the demands of poultry grew, and as a result Tyson Foods prospered by feeding off the immense wartime demands. The company was passed down from father to son, rustled its way to becoming a diverse food company, and reached prodigious growth in the 1980s. Tyson has maintained a familial lineage within its company and along with its historic ties and donations to hunger and disaster reliefs, has gained great support throughout the years. Crystal Eastman wrote “Now We Can Begin” in 1920 right after the 19th amendment was passed, which gave women the right to vote. The amendment took a long and overdue 70 years before it was passed by two thirds majority. The fight for women’s rights began in the 1840’s and continued when Eastmen joined to further the cause. Eastman’s leading argument was that there was still advancements that needed to be made in women’s rights. She was striving to change the rights of letting women choose an occupation and equal pay, gender equality in homes and not raising sons to be “feminists”, the right to voluntary motherhood, and motherhood endowment, a financial support for child-rearing and homemaking.
Madeleine Thien’s “Simple Recipes” is a story of an immigrant family and their struggles to assimilate to a new culture. The story follows a father and daughter who prepare Malaysian food, with Malaysian customs in their Canadian home. While the father and daughter work at home, the mother and son do otherwise outside the home, assimilating themselves into Canadian culture. The story culminates in a violent beating to the son by his father with a bamboo stick, an Asian tool. The violent episode served as an attempt by the father to beat the culture back into him: “The bamboo drops silently. It rips the skin on my brothers back” (333) Violence plays a key role in the family dynamic and effects each and every character presented in the story
The reading of “The Boat” by Alistair Macleod, and “Simple Recipes” by Madeleine Thein, both display many components that draw attention to different family dynamics, as well as how each member is tested when if comes to love.
“Canadians have a favorite pastime, and they don’t even realize it. They like to ask – they absolutely love to ask – where you are from if you don’t look convincingly white.” (Hill np). Race is never a really straightforward issue in Canada and hardly a matter of the past. Issues of racial identification and “mixed race” are engaged by Lawrence Hill in the text “Black plus White, ...equals black” an excerpt from his novel “Black Berry, Sweet Juice: On Being Black and White in Canada” (HarperFlamingo, 32$). He has struggled to develop his own sense of identity through various experiences, one of them was “straightening out his hair” which was encouraged by his father. From my perspective, although Hill’s father’s action stemmed from good intentions, it resulted in a negative effect on Hill’s confidence with regards to his appearance and his own differences as a child; despite that, generally speaking, his parents still made a great influence on Hill’s identity.
