In a spur of the moment decision I decided to enter into the 2017 Outside Hacks Hackathon. The Hackathon centered around creating applications that would be beneficial to Outside Lands Music Festival attendees. I was attempting to make something out of nothing with a miniscule amount of hackathon experience, no project ideas and just one friend who was even wary of my decision to join. I mingled with a few participants, and heard pitches, but still failed to join a team by the start of the competition. I’d lost all hope until I ran into another eager participant who was willing to go above and behind to create something new and exciting. Our goal was simple: we wanted to find a way to connect festival attendees who had no one to go with. …show more content…
These obstacles unfortunately continued to haunt us as the competition continued. We thought we had a winning idea, but with less than 10 hours to go, and a app that was nowhere close to being complete, the rumor mill started turning. It had somehow gotten back to our team that another team was replicating our idea. I had attributed it to the open pitch fest that we had earlier in the day, but nonetheless didn’t worry. My team members leaned more towards the side of panic, and declared that we brainstorm new ideas. With time quickly slipping away and a lack of creative ideas, we embraced the competition and decided to stick to our original idea. With less than an hour to go, my team and I had successfully built something to show during the judging process. By that time, we’d been so focused on making a great product that we had completely fallen short on preparing for the actual presentation. My team decided to elect me spokeswomen of our project. With 30 minutes left until judging, I adapted and quickly scoured the internet for anything that could help me tell the backstory of our project and why it was the next big thing. I practiced on a few participants and eager onlookers to shake the nerves that I had. By the time the judges came around I had a tailored speech prepared, and was able to present with little to no
Explanation Participation trophies are awards handed out for simply participating in an athletic event or program. These trophies are very common in youth athletics across the country and their effects on children have been debated for years. In many areas around the country, teams hand out thousands of trophies to children, and many of the children will receive more than one particiation trophy (Merryman). Arguments have been formed from both sides of these trophies and researchers have found beneficial and harmful effects on young athletes when given participation trophies.
Having never done this before, I really didn?t know how long my speech should last
Running in a girl’s cross country meet isn’t as easy as it sounds, but with a little experience and help it can become a better experience. The first thing everyone does is line up on a spray painted line in the grass. Before the race even starts the race official tells us the rules and counts everyone that is running. He also tells us about any big holes or ditches that we may encounter in our 2 mile journey.
When I found out I qualified to be a candidate for the NJHS, I knew I had to take this chance. This group is made up of people who depict leadership, character, citizenship, academic success, and service and I would love to join. These characteristics wouldn't just be valuable for a candidate to have, but for everyone to have to exceed in life. If I were to be in the National Junior Honor Society, it would give me an opportunity to ameliorate my future and motivate me to do better.
The Olympics are supposed to be a time of peace and a time where countries could come together and be free from politics. The Olympics are also a time where nations should put away their differences and celebrate the reason why they came to participate in the games, which was to play sports. Throughout history, many of the Olympics have lived up to this expectation. At the same time, there have also been some Olympics that have not lived up to this expectation because they have been experienced boycotts, political protests, and even violence. The politics in the Olympics need to be kept out because it there is no place for it. The 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow is an example of one Olympics that was not free from politics because of the boycott started by the U.S.
I felt very nervous prior to the session beginning. I get anxious speaking in front of groups of people, and I was fearful I would say the wrong thing, or not follow the Solution-Focused plan correctly. I was also thinking about what may happen and how the clients would react, and what they would say as the conversation progressed. However, after a few minutes, I started to feel more relaxed, and forgot about the classroom full of people who were watching me. I started to feel like I was in a real session with real clients, and my gut feelings just started to take over my nervousness.
Conditioning my brain muscles, lifting 2 by 3 inch flashcards, and honing my guessing skills, I am a Decathlete. Ever since the summer of 2013, I made a life changing choice to join a particular group of rejects, outcasts of teenage society, known as the Academic Decathlon Team. Even my friends poked fun at me for deciding to associate myself in a class where students apprehensively awaited to answer academic questions via buzzer (which I now know is a common misconception). However,
Made to Stick introduces 6 strategies that increase the impact of an idea. Anil Sabharwal’s presentation at 2015 Google I/O Conference demonstrates 3 key strategies from Made to Stick. The following content from this document depicts how Anil made the product compelling through the appeal of Credibility, and Emotion. Furthermore, he enhances these points through the notion of storytelling. However, he could have incorporated more unexpectedness prominently throughout the presentation to improve on sustaining the audiences’ attention.
I believe that, if I feel nervous in the future, I will not be afraid of this emotion like what I did before. This course provided me knowledge on how to make me relax. Little by little, I have gained the confidence of combating the fear of public speaking in this course. All these precious experience will continue benefiting me in the future. Thus, I am proud to say that I have fullfilled the course objectives and enhanced my public speaking
Zootopia is a children's movie that shows the society of animals living in a big city. It is a city with all different species of animals, with the surrounding suburbs containing different climates for the different species. The main character, Judy Hopps, follows her dreams of being the first rabbit police officer in the big city. Although she is optimistic and determined, she faces many challenges along the way, like how she had to move away from her home town that was filled with greenspace and agriculture, as well the difficulty she faced being the only rabbit to become a police officer. She faced a lot of prejudice from the larger animals, but she persevered and graduated from the police academy.
After re watching my own presentation I have noticed many different things that I didn’t think of or notice when I was originally presenting it. While watching it some of the things that I think I did well on where first my talking. This is something that I know I did better on because I did my presentation a little different from everyone else. Another thing that I think worked well for my presentation was the word to picture ratio. I felt like I did a good job not putting my entire script on the screen but enough to give the class a good summery about what I was talking about. Some areas of the rubric that I still think I need to work on is being more specific on answering the essential question making it more obvious as to what my over
The Olympic Games. The biggest international sports competition in which the worlds’ best athletes compete from all around the world to win medals for their countries. The Olympics have been a worldwide tradition since the eighth century BC, but it has hardly benefited us as a species. Every time we have the Games, our resources are abused in order to create the Olympics we desire. Huge amounts of money are used to build venues and make medals, only leading up to the countries who host the Games going into debt afterwards. There are only rare cases in which the countries earn money from hosting the Olympics, but most of the time the debt that they get themselves into take years, or even decades to pay off. You might ask yourself, why do we even host the Olympics, if it has these huge disadvantages? The answer is because we want pride for our countries, no matter how temporary it is. Knowing this, we can safely say, that the Olympic Games do not help us grow as a species.
For as long as I can remember, public speaking has always been one of my greatest weaknesses. Whether it’s a simple in-class presentation or a speech in front of an auditorium filled with people, I can barely get my words out from the anxiety and stress. I’ve always admired those who seem to be able to just flow through their speeches without as much as a hint of nerves. The reason I decided to write my paper on this specific topic was to learn about different tips that people have for public speaking.
In order to successfully deliver an oral presentation such as a speech, the speaker must follow certain procedures to ensure his message can be conveyed clearly. Vast amounts of research are essential in order to acquire the knowledge necessary to be able to speak about a topic comfortably and answer any questions the audience might have during the course of the presentation. After acquiring such knowledge about the topic of the presentation the speaker will feel more confident, confidence is key in delivering speeches and other oral presentations because it makes the speaker look more credible and trustworthy. Lastly, the speaker must be fluid and eloquent with his words, the speaker must be able to sound clear and crisp while delivering their
Practice is a major role that needs to be played when it comes to presenting. Practicing, I feel gives you more confidence in your speech, and more preparation than if you were to not practice. Rehearsing before the speech then presenting makes you seem like you actually know what you are talking about even if the only reason you know all these facts is because of study and practicing. Practicing through my speech really helps me with my presentation, if I practice enough, I feel very confident to where I wouldn’t need t a paper to look at notes during the speech. This concept is important for anything. Practicing will always help you with any future task.
