Everyone is different. We are all given unique personality traits and gifts to use in our daily lives to help us in the workplace. When we all get together in a group setting, it is important to know our own strengths and weaknesses and how they come together to make the group work. It is not always as easily said as it is done. There will be those in a group that have clashing personalities and don’t seem to want to agree on anything, much less work together to complete a given task. I would definitely say that I am very animated when I am communicating with my coworkers, especially in an informal setting. I tend to use my hands a lot when I am talking and I have been told that people can tell how I really feel about something just based off my facial expressions. I am not always one to vocally say how I feel about a certain thing, but whether I realize it or not, my facial expressions tend to do the talking for me. In a recent article written on the importance of face-to-face communication compared to new, technological ways of communicating, the author stated, “Despite a marked increase in the number of communication and collaboration technologies available to workers, a recent survey of knowledge workers by TrackVia reveals that most workers still regularly communicate the old fashioned way, in person and face-to-face” (PR Newswire, 2013). Observation and attendance constructs an idea of how group therapy works. Attending this group was important because of the profoundness of its meaning and experiences I have witnessed.

As much as I understand that everyone may not like each other, I believe it is important to be respectful of all parties concerned and get along. I also believe if given an opportunity most people will be able to see the good in others and forge a relationship of some sort.

One of our strengths as a team is that we get input from everyone involved. Every member of our team is a leader in some way. Part of being a good leader is knowing how important it is to receive the best ideas from each member of their team. We attend group meetings where we discuss any challenges, issues, and problems. At these meetings, we often exchange ideas or brainstorm new ones with each other and come up with the best and most creative team solutions as potential answers to those perceived problems.

Working in teams provides an opportunity for individuals to come together and establish a rapport towards others within a group. Teamwork is classified as people with different strengths and skills who work together to achieve a common goal. When a team works well, specific objectives are fulfilled and satisfied. Teamwork plays a crucial role in implementing and fulfilling a common goal in a team project. Each member plays a role and takes on different responsibilities combined together. In different stages of teamwork, conflicts and arguments may occur for as members have different standpoints which need to be harmonized within the team. In reflection on my learning experience in the group class, I have gained clarity on what sorts of competencies of facilitating group therapy, as well as in what areas social workers and students tend to feel most strong in my practice. Hence, I can utilize my strengths and manage my weaknesses to be a better member in future group assignments. In particular, I will focus on utilizing my personality traits in moderation as either extremes of high or low on a personality may be too rigid, being an extreme strength in certain situations, but being an extreme weakness in others. Despite having a low extraversion, I can still take a more active role in future discussions by sharing all constructive ideas instead of shying out and worrying of others’ negative feedback. I will also balance between orderliness and flexibility by proposing general deadlines for our group and at the same time allowing members to organize their own progress so that we can have organization in the group without suffocating the members. With more flexibility given, I will keep in mind to be agreeable in moderation in which I will be trusting and compassionate to the members but also able to be firm if any member is slacking or not meeting our deadlines.
