The answers from most, if not all, of the students would be “yes”. Technology use has drastically increased over the past few years, and this dramatic increase is having its effects on classrooms. With online textbooks, homework, and lectures, it is inevitable for it to have an effect. Technology is rising at a rapid pace, and it is rapidly being integrated into secondary classrooms in many forms, such as online textbooks, homework, and lectures. Because of this swift incorporation of technology, high school students have a decreased focus in the classroom, have decreased motivation and patience, and it has changed the roles of teachers and students, in addition to having negative effects on a students’ writing and spelling skills.

Most schools now have classrooms that use technology throughout the entire class time and even at home to do homework. In recent years, schools have begun implementing tablets and other devices in the classroom to better student’s education. The use of technology in the classroom provides more of a personalized learning experience and gives students a widespread availability to engage in learning. Technology is necessary in today’s modern globe, it is basically “the pen and paper of our time and the lens through which we experience much of our world” (Warlick, 2013). Technology is not just considered the “internet”, it is so much greater than that. Overall, it enhances the quality of education and engages students deeper than ever before. With all the significant gains, why would people argue that technology hinders students more than it helps? By permitting the use of cellphones in school, students can increase their knowledge and complete school work by using applications and other features on their smartphones. Teachers and students are now “using their phones as clickers to answer questions, providing feedback on student progress, and also to document labs, collaborate on group projects and capture teachers’ notes” (Higgins). Students like to do things the fun way, and by using their phones as clickers, they can learn and review for tests while having fun answering them on their phones. Students can use services on their phones to turn assignments in too. During group assignments, students can work right on their phones. If a student was absent one day, all another student has to do is send them the work they did with a touch of a button. Teachers usually move very fast when presenting information to students. By taking pictures of notes, it makes it easy for students to make sure they have all the notes without the teacher moving too quickly. They will be able to go home and review everything right there on that small little screen, hence increasing their knowledge. This past semester, I have tried to incorporate a variety of small learning activities that either use social media platforms or mimic the act of sharing on social media to expose students to what is possible when they choose to use social media platforms for educational and professional purposes. As I continue to expand how I use the Chromebooks more next semester, I only hope to utilize these tools more. Students need to be exposed to strong models of digital citizenship, and these activities can open up a dialogue about what that means. Also, many of the skills that they use with technology align with new Common Core State Standards.

Our classrooms should no longer be confined to four walls and a few teachers who are considered to be experts in knowledge. Our classrooms need to keep up with a changing society and a new world that is dependent on technology. As students graduate, they need the technological skills needed to thrive in a world in which technology sets the pace. Society expects the school system to produce functional citizens who have the skills to gain profitable employment, and not be a drain on the system.

Computers have always been useful, but not until recently have computers become useful for children who are twelve and under. Of course these children enjoy playing games and talking to there friends on the computer but due to new innovations coming out everyday children can now do a lot more then just play and socialize. Computers have brought school to the home. When children come home from school it used to mean school was over but today if you have access to the internet school is know longer over but just beginning on the internet. The internet has special educational sites that children can visit and learn from. Besides that children actually can have contact with there personal teacher from school. A new invention called the “Mobile Author can be used by human instructors either from a computer or a mobile phone to create their own Intelligent Tutoring Systems and to distribute them to their students. Students can also use any computer or mobile phone to have access to theory and tests.” (Source 2, Journal) Homework, notes, review assignments can now be given over the internet by the child’s teacher from there school. “Instructors can monitor their students; progress and communicate with their students during the course.” (Source 2, Journal) Children can learn new information on the internet and they are able to review and get extra help on things they don’t understand. If a child realizes that they do not understand something when they get home, they know longer have to wait to go in to school for extra help, but they now can communicate with there teacher online or they can go to an internet tutoring system which will give them just as much help as being in a regular classroom.
