Romeo and Juliet is a Shakespearean classic that has been retold and reread throughout the ages. The problem is, with something this old, newer versions can drift off away from the original. Now out of all these versions there has yet to be one made towards children that was until 2011. Gnomeo and Juliet was the classic love story mixed with blue and red Gnomes. The story did not follow the original to the letter which would be expected since it is a children's movie. Some of the story was changed in order to make it appropriate for younger audiences. This version of Romeo and Juliet is far too different from the original. Even for its similarities it dilutes the original meanings of the play. Tybalt is broken and assumed dead. Unlike the original however, he does not stay dead. The gnome that plays Mercutio, like Tybalt, does not die. He does get his hat cut off, hats are the prize of the gnomes. Romeo, after it is found that he and Juliet are together, is thrown in front of a car. They believe him to be dead. Juliet is then glued to her tower. A rouge lawnmower tears through the yard towards her. Romeo come back, unharmed, and tries to save her from an untimely death. The tower is destroyed and everyone believes both of them to be dead. Because of their death the families decide to stop there feuding, seeing just how unimportant it is. In the end Romeo and Juliet arise from the rubble no worse for wear. The two of them become a couple, the yards become one. Blue gnomes and red gnomes no longer fight. Gnomeo and Juliet is a modern interpretation of Shakespeare's original play called Romeo and Juliet. Some differences between the movie and the original play are that the movie is not a tragedy; Gnomeo and Juliet survive, Whereas in Gnomeo and Juliet Paris and Lady Montague do not die. Similarly, in Gnomeo and Juliet both their parents are feuding Gnomeo's family (the Blue Gnomes) and Juliet's family (the red Gnomes). This movie shares a wonderful interpretation of this play with hundreds of children all over the world. By making the two main characters animated gnomes, it makes the movie look engaging and the children will want to watch
First, we learned that in Gnomeo and Juliet, most of the characters are gnomes, there is no Mercutio, the Nurse is a frog, and Lady Capulet and Montague have died before the story starts. Also in both stories Tybalt is an antagonist and Friar Lawrence gives Romeo/Gnomeo and Juliet advice on their love and how they can be together. Secondly, we learned that Romeo and Juliet takes place in Verona, Italy in the 1600s and Gnomeo and Juliet takes place in modern day Britain. In both stories Romeo/Gnomeo talks to Juliet on the balcony. Lastly, we learned that Romeo and Juliet starts the story with a fight and Gnomeo and Juliet starts with a lawn mower race. Additionally, in both stories it ends with the feud being over, but in Romeo and Juliet they kill themselves and in Gnomeo and Juliet they are almost killed by the Terafirminator. This had been done before in many films. Prominent among them were, Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 “Romeo and Juliet” and Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 “William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.” Both films stay true to the themes of Shakespeare’s original play. However, the modernised Luhrmann film not only maintains the essence of Shakespeare’s writings, Luhrmann makes it relevant to a teenage audience. This is done through the renewal of props and costumes, the reconstruction of the prologue and the upgrading of the setting, whilst preserving the original Shakespearean language. Out of the two, it is Luhrmann who targets Romeo & Juliet to a younger audience to a much larger extent than Zeffirelli.

The movie Gnomeo and Juliet, presents a similar idea of the story of Romeo and Juliet. In brief, while there are some notable differences between both versions of Shakespeare’s classic, it is without a doubt, that the essence of the story line remains the same; the tale of two star-crossed lovers.

Where, even the city of Verona is divided because of this long-standing grudge between them. Then, two young people meet share a heart striking kiss; they fall in love. For they did not know they were two unfortunate souls that werenever meant to be together. Juliet Capulet and Romeo Montague fell in love on that evening. Juliet was becoming of age to be married her parents wanted her for the County named Paris. Juliet had one person that she could confide in, her nanny or what the play calls her nurse.
