Romeo and Juliet is a timeless, classic love story written by the incomparable William Shakespeare. Many of Shakespeare’s works are considered literary classics, but none are more loved than Romeo and Juliet. This play masterfully tells the love story of two teenagers in Elizabethan England. The title characters Romeo and Juliet are members of two feuding families, Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet. There are different stylistic ways of portraying Romeo and Juliet, and the two most popular film versions portray two very different styles of this one play. Zeferelli's Romeo and Juliet was made in the 1970s, and is the film version most commonly shown in high school classrooms. The newest film version of this play is Baz Luhrmanns Romeo and Juliet. This version sets the classic story in a modern day setting. Both versions, while different stylistically, hold true to the basic story line of the play.
Zeferelli’s is the older and more classical version of Romeo and Juliet. Zeferelli uses the setting of Verona, and the costumes that were appropriate to Elizabethan England. He does take liberties with the dialogue, in that he shortens many of the monologues made by the characters. This is the version that is most commonly shown in high school classrooms, because while some of the sexual puns are included they are in no way stressed. Another thing that is not brought out in Zeferelli's version is the common assessment of Mercutio's sexual preference. It is commonly believed that Mercutio was interested in Romeo in sexual way, and that he possessed very homosexual qualities. Zeferelli simply portrays Mercutio as Romeos friend. One thing that set Zeferelli’s film apart from other films of its time was the fact that...

...ended. While Zeferelli’s version held true to the way the play has been written, only to take liberties with some of the dialogue, Luhrmann set the play in modern times. With his updated version Luhrmann was able to bring Romeo and Juliet to an entirely new, and younger audience. He directed the film so that today’s teenagers could relate to it. While the language may have confused some of today’s teenagers the majority understood the story. The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is a timeless, and romantic story that everyone at some point can relate to. This is not a fairytale it doesn’t have a happy ending, but it is a love story. Romeo and Juliet is a play that can be updated time and time again without ever loosing its original luster, and brilliance. I can only hope that when my children are teenagers another inspired director will bring this love story to life again.
In conclusion, Lurhmann uses a lot of modern filming techniques to make Romeo and Juliet appeal to a contemporary audience. By relating certain aspects to situations in modern society, it makes the audience understand the ideas behind the original play and he simplifies the complicated old English of Shakespeare by adding exciting and dynamic visuals. Lurhmann tried to create a modern version of Romeo and Juliet and he was completely successful in his aims. Lurhmann defied all odds by making his film appeal to a modern audience and not only is this film very clever, it is a must see for any film lovers.

Zeffirelli’s ultimate goal for his version of Romeo and Juliet was to capture Shakespeare’s original intentions for the play while targeting the teenage audience of his generation. Luhrmann’s intentions were different however; he changed the way an audience looks at Shakespeare’s masterpiece by modernising the props, costumes, and sets. Obviously, to match film time quotas Zefirelli and Luhrmann has both cut many lines out of the play.
Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, is a tragic love story about two young lovers who are forced to be estranged as a result of their feuding families. The play is about their struggle to contravene fate and create a future together. As such, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood would try and emulate Shakespeare’s masterpiece. This had been done before in many films. Prominent among them were, Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 “Romeo and Juliet” and Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 “William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.” Both films stay true to the themes of Shakespeare’s original play. However, the modernised Luhrmann film not only maintains the essence of Shakespeare’s writings, Luhrmann makes it relevant to a teenage audience. This is done through the renewal of props and costumes, the reconstruction of the prologue and the upgrading of the setting, whilst preserving the original Shakespearean language. Out of the two, it is Luhrmann who targets Romeo & Juliet to a younger audience to a much larger extent than Zeffirelli.

Ideal Elizabethan women portrayed a simple beauty with gentle, empathetic, tender, caring, and sensitive qualities. When Banquo encounters the Three Sisters he addresses them as women “and yet your beards forbid me to interpret that you are so.” They control fate, sustain full independence, being pictured as outcasts in the play’s starting stasis. Lady Macbeth shows prominent contrast to ideal assets. Her debut features an aside questioning Macbeth’s abilities to fulfill prophecy, and takes charge of the situation herself: “That I may pour my spirits in thine ear, and chastise with the valor of my tongue all that impedes thee from the golden round.” Soliloquies reveal a spirit of independence and an unsubmissive nature; she calls upon spirits to silence her sensitivity and remove her tender nature: “That no compunctious visiting’s of nature shake my fell purpose…” Lady MacDuff embodies the one female character portrayed as an ideal Elizabethan woman, submissive to her husband and caring towards their children. Exchanges between Lady MacDuff and her son illustrate a strong woman capable of living life and working through issues, without the need of cruelty.
Carville took on what feared the public on multiple levels and were able to move past it. As dreadful as it was for the patients to go through, they were the first to say that all the pain was worth it. The Daughters of charity and the doctors took on a daunting task and made it ok. This is when Thomas Berry devoted his career in finding out why and how the Western religion and culture failed to keep up a nurturing relationship between humans and the Earth. Thomas Berry wanted to get people more involved with the universe and the natural nature than having people talk to themselves. Thomas Berry wanted to show that God was not just a Creator of higher being but God surrounded humans wherever they went. God is not distant from creation and all creation participates in the divine reality. Specifically he wanted to show that God was within nature and human beings should create a sus...
William Shakespeare has provided some of the most brilliant plays to ever be performed on the stage. He is also the author of numerous sonnets and poems, but he is best known for his plays such as Hamlet, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Romeo and Juliet. In this essay I would like to discuss the play and movie, "Romeo and Juliet", and also the movie, Shakespeare in Love. The play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is set in the fictional city of Verona. Within the city lives two families, the Capulets and the Montegues, who have been feuding for generations.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), obesity now ranks as the 10th most important health problem in the world (“Obesity Seen as a Global Problem”). Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years. Centers for Disease Control and Protection estimates that obesity contributed to the deaths of 112,000 Americans in 2000 (“Obesity in the U.S. Fast”). It is estimated that annual medical care cost of obesity are as high as $147 billion (“Obesity in the U.S. Fast”). Government-provided food stamps are often expended on junk or fast food, because it tends to be less expensive than fresh or cook food. Governments fund producers of meat and dairy products to keep prices low. For now, governments are taking a smarter and more productive approach through regulation, and by working with manufacturers.
The evolution of the society from traditional to the age of complexity is a journey in finding its own identity; being able to have a political stand, a stabilized economy and other factors necessary in building a connection between the state and society to adapt to the social changes brought by modernity and globalization. As Nash would say, the turns started from the control of power through the use of politics as a form of creating identity and its application through manipulation. And this idea of control will almost certainly raise doubts and as a counter force, groups of people will emerge to alter the way society should be run. Which lead to movements that aim market independence, ideological revolution, etc., that changes the traditional functions of the state and the society. The transfer of power to the actors that manages the market, the freedom of criticisms and personal judgment given to the people and the building of bridges between nations give rise problems on limiting the power of the states and their way of governance.
