Can you imagine meeting someone, falling in love with them immediately, and getting married to them all in a little over three days?! Well that’s exactly what happens in Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare, and Gnomeo and Juliet written by Kelly Asbury, Andy Riley, Kevin Cecil, Rob Sprackling, Steve Hamilton Shaw, and John R. Smith. In these two stories there are big and small similarities, and differences between the characters, setting, and plot events.
In these stories there are similarities between the characters, but there are a lot more differences between them. First off, in Romeo and Juliet there are eleven main characters and on the other hand, in Gnomeo and Juliet there are eight main characters. Furthermore, most of the characters in the spin off are gnomes or animals and have different names that are close to the original one in Romeo and Juliet, such as Benny and

Gnomeo. In addition, in the spin off there are no characters Mercutio or close to that and the Nurse is a frog. Lady Capulet and Lord Montague die before the story starts, for example, when Capulet glues Juliet to her pedestal he says “You’ve left me no choice, Juliet. I’ve already lost your mother”. However, in both tales Tybalt is an antagonist. In the text Tybalt joins the scuffle in Act 1 Scene 1 and kills Mercutio later in the story in Act 3 Scene 1, and in Gnomeo and Juliet Tybalt cheats in the mower race, destroys the blue’s favorite plant, and breaks Benny’s hat. Also in both stories Friar Lawrence gives Romeo/Gnomeo and Juliet advice about how to be together, but in Gnomeo and Juliet his advice helps them be together in the end, and not die like in Romeo and Juliet. For the most part the setting only has a couple big differences and only one similarity. To start off Romeo and Juliet takes place in Verona, Italy in the 1600s, as it says in the first prologue “In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,” and Gnomeo and Juliet takes place on Verona Drive in modern day Britain. Also Gnomeo and Juliet meet at a greenhouse instead of in the original story where Romeo and Juliet meet at the Capulet masquerade. Besides that after they meet in both stories they meet again right away and Romeo and Gnomeo both talk to Juliet, who is on her balcony in the Capulet palace/garden. Plus Romeo goes into exile in Mantua and Gnomeo goes into exile in a park. Lastly the plot events are similar and different in many ways. First of all, in the beginning of Romeo and Juliet there is a fight between a couple of the Montagues and Capulets, and in contrast in Gnomeo and Juliet they have a lawn mower race. Besides that, in both the text and spin off they meet right after their first meeting, but in Romeo and Juliet they talk about getting married for instance, Juliet says, “If that thy bent of love be honorable, Thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow” whereas in Gnomeo and Juliet they talk about meeting the next day at 11:45 a.m. Another difference is in Gnomeo and Juliet when they meet the next day they meet a plastic flamingo named Featherstone, who gives them advice when they are doubting if they should even be together. Equally important in Romeo and Juliet Tybalt kills Mercutio, Romeo kills Tybalt, and Romeo is banished for it when Prince Escalus says, “And for that offence immediately we do exile him hence”. In Gnomeo and Juliet, Gnomeo is not responsible for Tybalt’s death because Tybalt didn’t listen to Gnomeo’s warning about the brick wall, but he was still put in exile in a way. Also a big difference was that in Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet kill themselves, and in contrast in Gnomeo and Juliet they almost die by the Terrafirminator, which is a giant lawn mower, Benny bought to get revenge for the blues. Still in both stories, Tybalt dies, Romeo/Gnomeo and Juliet get married, and the family feud is resolved. Ultimately, it is apparent that there are big and small differences, and similarities of characters, setting, and plot events of the text Romeo and Juliet and the movie Gnomeo and Juliet.
First, we learned that in Gnomeo and Juliet, most of the characters are gnomes, there is no Mercutio, the Nurse is a frog, and Lady Capulet and Montague have died before the story starts. Also in both stories Tybalt is an antagonist and Friar Lawrence gives Romeo/Gnomeo and Juliet advice on their love and how they can be together. Secondly, we learned that Romeo and Juliet takes place in Verona, Italy in the 1600s and Gnomeo and Juliet takes place in modern day Britain. In both stories Romeo/Gnomeo talks to Juliet on the balcony. Lastly, we learned that Romeo and Juliet starts the story with a fight and Gnomeo and Juliet starts with a lawn mower race. Additionally, in both stories it ends with the feud being over, but in Romeo and Juliet they kill themselves and in Gnomeo and Juliet they are almost killed by the Terafirminator. So would you’ve wanted to be a part of either of these
stories?
Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, is a story of two young lovers. These two hearts, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, belong to feuding families. The family feud causes them to keep their love a secret and therefore only Romeo, Juliet, Benvolio, the Nurse and Friar Lawrence know of their love. Romeo and Juliet are able to look past the feud and let themselves fall in mad love with the other. They let themselves do almost anything for the other and at times it seems like too much to do, even for the one they love.
“Do not deny to him that you love me.”(Rom. 4.1 25) Paris, one of Juliet’s suitors, is trying to win Juliet’s love at the same time that Romeo loves her. Together, Paris and Romeo are juxtaposed, while vying for Juliet’s love, so that they are compared and contrasted. Both have similar traits but are different through how they act towards people and personalities. Paris and Romeo are alike in integrity but very different by their personalities and treatment of Juliet.
Romeo and Juliet is a play about two lovers who have to risk their lives in order to demonstrate their love and will to stay together, regardless the feud between their families. By the end, the death of Romeo and Juliet finally bring the reconciliation to these two families. It is fate that the two most shall-not meet people fall in love and it love that eventually won against hatred. Since then, there have been many different versions of Romeo and Juliet, whether it was for film, stage, musicals. These different recontextualised adaptions change the original play by many ways, some modernise the language, environment, props as well as changing the original characteristics of some characters. Out of all the different adaptions of Romeo and Juliet, two stood out the most. One was the Romeo and Juliet (1996) and directed by Baz Luhrmann and the other one was Romeo and Juliet Broadway (2013) play version,
In reality, there are a lot of remakes of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, but none of them are quite like Kelly Asbury’s Gnomeo and Juliet. The name itself is pretty bizarre. Gnomeo and Juliet takes the audience on a rollercoaster of different emotions: hatred, hope, happiness, pity, and even anger. Gnomeo and Juliet is very different from the original, but somehow they are still very similar in character’s traits, the fight between the families, and the theme areas. For one thing, Gnomeo and Juliet and Romeo and Juliet have very similar and different characters.
known works, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. But is it so simple? How do these two compare,
The differences are more abundant than the similarities. One of the big differences is that Romeo is very outgoing, daring and breaks a lot of rules for love, for example “'Tis but thy name that is my enemy; Thou art thyself, though not a Montague...Alack, there lies more peril in thine eye Than twenty of their swords: look thou but sweet, And I am proof against their enmity.” (Act 2 Scene 2). This shows that he is breaking many rules like the fact that their families are enemies and are not to talk also he is in her back lawn where he could be caught and killed. On the other hand Paris is very mature and follows all the rules of society. He asks Juliet’s father for her hand in marriage, but Romeo just married her without telling anyone. The second difference is Romeo is very immature, you can tell this because he was in love with Rosaline, but he went to the party and completely forgot about Roseline when he meet Juliet. Paris has loved Juliet throughout the whole book from the moment Lord Capulet asked him about Juliet to the death of Juliet and himself. This shows how he is more mature and sure about his love for Juliet. A similarity of personality traits between Paris and Romeo is they both have loved Juliet since the first time they meet her and they both have stayed loyal to
different ways. There are many similarities and differences in the play Romeo and Juliet and the movie Gnomeo and Juliet. In both the play and the movie, they both set in Fair Verona “In fair Verona, where we lay our scene.” (Folder Digital Text,n.d. ). Fair Verona is a very interesting setting where it mostly just consists of the Montague and the Capulets or in the movie “The Red” and “The blue”. The similarities and differences in plot and characterization in Romeo and Juliet and Gnomeo and Juliet impact the mood.
In conclusion, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz have many similarities and differences in what makes them classics, those of which include the areas of style and originality, broad audience appeal, and timeless themes. The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz are both examples of Mark Twain’s famous statement. No matter what happens, everyone is going to know about these
West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet, two classic tragedies about young love. Both have many similarities and differences, but none are dealbreakers. Things that need to be kept the same are left alone, leaving Shakespeare’s original meanings unaltered. New aspects and changes needed to modernize the story are written in well, still leaving a mostly accurate retelling of Romeo and Juliet. The differences are what makes it unique from others-- the racism, the take on Tony-- all important. The similarities are what keep it true to the original-- Juliet and Maria, and the famous balcony scene. Everything the writers put in is what makes West Side Story a classic, just like Shakespeare would want it to be.
Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story share many similar themes. Romeo and Juliet both chronicle a story of overcoming prejudice and hatred, forbidden love, and defying stereotypes that nobody thought could be broken. The two stories are similar in a multitude of ways, even though their settings are centuries apart- Romeo and Juliet set in the 1500’s, and West Side Story set in the 1950’s. Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story both teach a lesson of how prejudice can teach you how to hate, and how one of your rivals may be the one who helps you remember how to love.
William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet `Romeo and Juliet` is one of the best love stories of all time but although Shakespeare wrote the play, the story wasn't original. It all started hundreds of years before Shakespeare was born, in Italy when myths and folktales travelled about two young lovers from enemy families. After that, a poem was written called `The tragical history of Romeus and Juliet` by Arthur Brooke in 1562. So although Shakespeare's ideas weren't original, he has developed the basic ideas so well that now the whole world are familiar with the deeply touching love story of `Romeo and Juliet`.
What stuck out as being most different between the two versions of the movie were how the characters acted. In the classic version, Juliet is a much more timid girl and seems much less "experienced" than in the newer version. I feel that her shyness makes her more desireable. It makes their romance seem much more innocent and more meaningful at the same time. I feel that the new Romeo is much less shy in the newer version. This makes their love seem much more lustful, rather than meaningful. Another actor that seemes to change drastically is Tybalt. In the original version, he seems to be much more in control. Tybalt in the newer version is extremely bitter and much more controlled by his uncle.
The movie Gnomeo and Juliet (directed by Kelly Asbury) is based on the story of Romeo and Juliet written by Shakespeare. It tells the tale of a boy and a girl from warring families who meet and fall in love. In both stories, Romeo and Juliet come from two different families with extreme hatred towards one another, both characters fall in love with each other at first sight, and both characters sneak around to see each other.
Paramount aspect of the movie and the play, the theme, were the same, and the overall messages in both were the same. For example, one main message in the stories was that love conquers all. This was demonstrated in both the play and the film when Romeo and Juliet kept secretly meeting each other even though they knew it was against their families’ wishes. In one scene of both the movie and the play Romeo and Juliet even got married and died together so that even if they could not be together on earth they would be together in death.
The story of Romeo and Juliet is one that almost everyone is familiar with. Not even having read the book yet, you know immediately that it will end in tragedy. It’s a remarkable tale about two young people in love who’s tragic ends result from fate. William Shakespeare describes the battle of love and hate and spreads a universal message—in which love is always victorious.
