Recommended: Women's role in society

For too long women have walked in the shadows of civilization. For too long women have had no say, and no voice. Today however this is the dilemma of every girl: Choices. With a flood of options bombarding them from every which way, girls must define what is right, wrong, and sometimes what is best in the long run rather than right now. Also, they must cope with peer pressure and the media saying that it is okay to do things for the now, for simply temporary pleasure. With so many views and opinions circling around them, what hope does a girl have? In this whirlwind called life, Girl Scouts offers a place to set down roots and find Courage, Confidence and Character in order to make the world a better place. Courage: the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger and pain ("Courage"). One of the major qualities emphasized by Girl Scouts, courage is one of three standards taught in the final three levels of Girl Scouts. In their ‘cadette’ year (the third of six levels), a girl is taught about self image and how to stand up for what she believes. In their cumulative award, the Bronze award, a girl finds her voice and uses it to make a difference in the community that raised and nurtured her. She can do this by designing a community walk-a-thon for charity, or by lending a hand at the local humane center. Wherever the girl decides to work, Girl Scouts encourages her to choose a field that they have a passion for. Giving girls this chance to learn about courage, about facing danger and difficulty, will give them the poise to reach for the harder projects. It will also give them the belief that they can do that project. After touring the Humane Society with her older sisters Girl Scout troop, 5th g... ... middle of paper ... ...l raise hundreds of dollars for a cause she has a passion for. She gains Character, the lasting impression that is her, and it will be evident not only to her, but with everyone she passes and interacts. This brings the girl a surety of whom she is.
