Courageous Cassie and Some Important Life Lessons Courage is an attribute that someone has when they stand up for what they believe in. In the novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, by Mildred D. Taylor, Cassie shows some acts of courage. Cassie faces some challenges and she handles them in different ways. Cassie shows courage by standing up for Little Man, volunteering to be splashed by the bus for revenge, and standing up to Lillian Jean. I think that she did the right thing when she stood up for Little Man. She was trying to make things right. How would you feel if you had a brother who got mad at something that offends him and he gets in trouble? What if you knew why he was mad? In Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Cassie faces the same situation. Cassie was willing to get a beating for her brother, Little Man. Little Man looked at the book and asked for a new one, but when he opened the book, he was so mad that he threw it at the ground and stomped on it. But Cassie did not understand why he did this until she looked at the front page too. ““Miz Crocker”, I said, “I don’t want my book neither.””(Cassie, pg. 27) This shows that Cassie is willing to stand up for what's right, but sometimes the truth hurts. …show more content…
Hook: The Logans get splashed everyday while they walk to and from school, but now they’re mad….now it is time for revenge.
They got revenge alright. They got revenge about as sweet as it could get. Now Mr. Grimes the bus driver is furious. First, they miss lunch to dig a ditch to look like the road was washed away. Next, Cassie volunteered to get splashed for revenge, but Stacey said no. Finally, they hide behind some bushes and watch the bus get stuck. ““If I was to be walking out there when the bus comes, that old bus driver would be sure to speed up so’s he could splash me,” I suggested.” (Pg. 53) This proves that Cassie would be willing to get splashed for
revenge. Cassie just stood up to segregation. I think Lillian Jean just might pick a fight. Cassie bumped into Lillian Jean, and Lillian Jean is mad. It was just an accident. Cassie was told to get in the road by Lillian Jean. Cassie had other ideas. She was told to apologize after she already did. I think it is all Lillian Jean’s fault. ““I ain’t nasty, and if you’re so afraid of getting bumped, then why don’t you walk down there yourself.”” (Pg. 114) This proves that Cassie is brave enough to stand up to a bully. Now you know why and how Cassie shows courage by standing up for Little Man, volunteering to be splashed by the bus for revenge, and standing up to Lillian Jean. It shows that Cassie is willing to stand up for what is right and what she believes in. Now you know why I think Cassie is the bravest character in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, by Mildred D. Taylor. I hope you enjoyed this essay.
Courage is having to stand up for people who are being treated unfairly or if they have different skin color. In Mildred Taylor’s book Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry Stacey has to show courage by standing up for his friends and family. Stacey is a seventh grader at Great Faith Elementary School and is the oldest Logan kid. when Papa is gone he feels like he needs to be the man of the house and watch out for his younger siblings. Stacey had to show courage when he helped Little Man get back at the bus, takes the blame for the cheat notes, and took T.J. home when he was injured.
The statement peace is better than revenge is perfect for the book the roll of thunder Hear me cry. There are so many times while you are reading this novel that things could of went completely different if they would of gotten revenge but instead did the right thing to solve problems. Page 116 of Roll Of Thunder Hear Me Cry states “when the words had been spoken i turned and fled crying into the back of the wagon, no day in my life had ever been as cruel as this one”. This quote represents mamas effort to solve problems. By making Cassie apologize even when she wasn't the main problem caused more peace than getting revenge.
It takes courage to stand up for your convictions, especially if you know there will be consequences. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is a novel by Mildred D. Taylor tells the story of a young girl named Cassie Logan. Cassie is a girl in 1933 who stands up for the rights of her family and friends. Cassie follows through with her convictions, knowing there may be consequences.
“To Kill a Mockingbird” is a novel by Harper Lee, that teaches many themes, one of which being very important is courage. Many people think that courage is a man with a gun in his hand, but Lee’s definition is much different. She thinks that courage is when you know that you’re beaten before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what. The first quote I have to further explain this is early in the story when Atticus tells Jem and Scout about the court case he is handling. “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win” (Lee 101). Atticus knows he won’t win the court case, but he still tries his best and doesn’t falter whatsoever. Many people scrutinize him for defending a negro, but he ignores them like he should, and shows maturity and courage.
The story is set during an August morning at a funeral service for Frank Fowler, the youngest son of Matt Fowler (lead character in the story). In the opening paragraph, Frank’s older brother Steve says, "I should kill him” (Dubus 107), indicating some type of revenge. Matt indicates that he also wants revenge based on a conversation with his friend, Willis Trottier. Matt tells Trottier “Ruth would shoot him herself, if she thought she could hit him” (Dubus 109), implying that she would also seek revenge if she was able. Steve’s statement foreshadowed the mindset of revenge that the other characters have in the story.
“There was a sinking feeling in my stomach and I felt as if the world had turned itself upside down with me in it” (Page 129, Taylor). The author, Mildred Taylor, of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry has triumphed on writing the book while delivering the painful message of how African Americans were treated in the times of the Great Depression. Cassie has encountered many difficulties when having to accept the way she was treated outdoors along with all the other African-Americans in her society. In the opening, Cassie, along with her siblings, has to collaborate with the complications the bus has caused, and fearing the night men afterward for discovering what they have done. As greed, selfishness, and racism caused misfortune to the Logan family and their land, they stand strong with pride and dignity, willing to do whatever it takes to keep what is most important to their eyes. However, matters only get more and more complex when a lynch mob is determined to lynch Mr. David Logan, Mr. Morrison, and Mr. Jamison along with T.J. the night of the immense incident. Since the story is told through the eyes of a little girl, Cassie reveals all her pain as well as her perspective and point of view of life. As one can see, Mildred Taylor applied the conflict to the story ever so professionally. She did a phenomenal job using a variety of techniques to make many themes fit perfectly within the story; she additionally applied the theme to the conflicts. In addition, the story was recounted through the eyes of the main character, Cassie, which will soon lose her innocence. Cassie’s point of view had a great impact on the marvelous story.

Atticus shows he values courage frequently throughout the novel. When Scout begins to hear rude things about Atticus at school, he explains to her "to make the best of things, and of the way we conduct ourselves when the chips are down" (Lee 139). This fire helped to prevent the hanging of three people, T.J., Mr. Morrison, and Papa. It is important to keep it a secret that he started the fire, or terrible things will happen to him. He was right to start the fire because it did the unthinkable at the time: he got the blacks and whites to work together.
This was it, Catherine was up next to go on stage and perform a song for her whole school. She had tried to do perform many times before but her stage fright always got the best of her, but that wasn’t going to be the case today. Catherine gathered up all of her courage and went on stage nailing her performance. Without courage Catherine would have never been able to accomplish one of her largest goals. COurage is a universal attribute that can be expressed in many different ways. As seen in both To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee and The Help by Kathryn stockett, courage is when someone persists on following through no matter how many odds are stacked against them.
What does it mean to be courageous? The dictionary definition of courage is “The quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery”. The dictionary says to enable the mind to face a danger, for example, a 21-year old named Tommy had just came out of a burning building and he realizes his 10-year old sister is still inside. Tommy doesn’t wait for firemen to come, he gets the courage himself to save his sister even though he can get hurt or killed. This story talks about an act of courage the character gets and saves his sister’s life by putting himself at risk. To be courageous means to stand up for your friends or to stand up for yourself.
