In business communication, messages are conveyed using several types of media to include the internet, radio, podcast, and television. In order to convey effective messages presenters must select a medium that is appropriate for their desired objective. They must also tailor the message for the audience, which reflects an understanding of the reader's concerns, and motivations (Carrero, 2011). In the video “German coast guard-lost in translation”, the director uses a combination of techniques to illustrate the importance of language and communication. In the video, a German coast guard trainee gets an urgent message from a ship. The ships occupants speak English, and report that the ship is sinking. The German trainee responds back by saying “What are you sinking about?” The video ends with a message that says, “Improve your English”. The video makes light of a potentially dangerous situation however, it draws the audience’s attention to the real message of the video—know English! This video is a good example of a poor audio communication effort. Through the process of acquiring knowledge in this course, I have learned countless aspects about my own self. Amidst the very challenges I faced, the act of communication, management, and leadership, are among them. Being bilingual, my communication skills are on par yet at times hinder me from articulating my intention precisely as I have meant them. With every socialization I have made, I have striven to do better and to be better. I have learned that although you may consider yourself “fluent” in a foreign language, there are phrases or intonations to which come across as something entirely different from what you intended to say causing the message to be lost between the barrier of the two communicators.

Communication is a part of every person on this planet. It is the way we communicate our intentions and responses to our friends and other people whether in our personal or professional everyday lives. Chapter one defines human communication as “the process of understanding our experiences and the experiences of others through the use of verbal and nonverbal messages” (Quintanilla, K., & Wahl, S., 2014, p. 10). We as everyday communicators believe that we are all superior at communicating because we do it every day of our lives. People do not believe they can you be bad at something as simple as communication. People that have the belief of great communicators, when in fact they are the total opposite, exemplify a behavior called “communication bravado (Quintanilla, K., & Wahl, S., 2014)”.

This communication can be expressed in many ways: One can ask another “How are you today” Reply, “I’m okay” but the shrugging of the shoulders, squinting of eyes and lips closed tightly together gives another answer.
The average worker spends two-thousand and eighty hours a year at their place of employment. Communication within the workplace is often overlooked or not given as much importance as most people should allow, given the amount of time that is spent there. Beyond the more basic verbal speech, one must be aware of the nonverbal symbols and noise that can have an effect on communication. There are also cultural, environmental and internal factors that can effect communication and how successful it can be. The various perceptions that an individual has developed over their life can also effect communication.
