Everything we do in our life involves communication because it is a way for a sender to send message to the receiver by verbal and non-verbal communication. However, in some parts of the world messages that are delivered sometimes are not received in a way it is supposed to. A way to solve this is by using competent communicator and intercultural communication because it makes it easier for people from other cultures to communicate in general. On the other hand, there are also some problems faced because different cultures have different ways to express their way of communication. By understanding these types of communication and by defining them may solve this dilemma. In addition to that, there are also types of communication to consider that are commonly used, which is Proxemics, Gestures and body language.
2. VERBAL AND NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION.
2a) Verbal Communication
Verbal communication is when a sender communicates by speaking. However there are some pros and cons towards using verbal communication. For example, when someone uses verbal communications they can understand what message they are trying to send without any explanation however, some people have different ways of saying things especially people from different cultures because they have different accents and dialects.
2b) Non-verbal communication
Non-verbal communication decodes messages using body language and facial expressions. Therefore, non-verbal communication is a type of language as its own that can be used universally. In every society nonverbal communication is one of the most powerful tools that a person can use to interpret the message that is being delivered. Even though verbal communication is fairly straightforward, nonverbal communication allows others to sense the true emotions of the person that is expressing them. For example even though a person may say that they are not irritated, their usage of voice may display otherwise. Nonverbal communication not only reveals hidden messages, but it also complements, substitutes, and exaggerates verbal communication.
When we think of communication, we tend to think of speech, but there is a lot more to it than verbal communication. Gesturing, tone of voice and facial expressions are all parts of communication that are not verbal. We may not even always realize how much of communication is non-verbal, because we normally don’t think about it that way. However, it would be nearly impossible to communicate without non-verbal communication.
Communication between people is done in two ways: verbally and nonverbally. Those are layman terms. The language of verbal communication is described as digital code, whereas nonverbal communication is called analog code. The main difference that you could probably presume is that verbal communication involves a language, or better yet, spoken words. Inversely, nonverbal communication integrates the use of symbols or gestures to communicate an idea or feeling.
Nonverbal communication is rich in meaning. Everyone communicates through nonverbal gestures and motions. I realized that you can decipher a lot from an individual or individuals by just paying close attention to what they do, and that words are not really necessary. Watching two people interacting, I figured that they are really close by their space communication, eye language, and body movements.
If you were to switch style, whispering at the party and yelling at the library, then, your communication style will be ineffective to day the least. In both situations, you are engaging in the same communication process, but the rhetorical situation requires you to act different ways. Verbal communication is simply using spoken language to convey a message to other people. However, nonverbal communication is far more complicated, it contains the use of object, body language, actions and symbols to show meaning to people.
Non-verbal communication consists of interaction between body language and facial expression. Facial expressions are the initial factor to expressing emotion between beings. Animals interact with each other by using non-verbal communication. Nonverbal communication is important in building a relationship. Interactions between humans can be assisted by eye contact, close distances, and direct contact. Non-verbal communication appears in human development. The amount of time spent between relationships can be a main component to building a successful relationship and lead to closeness.
Every communication interaction involves two parts: the verbal and the nonverbal. Furthermore, every person is always communicating even when they are not saying a word, thus, it is possible to send an exclusively nonverbal message but it is not possible to send an exclusively verbal message. Nonverbal cues in the interaction are always more powerful indicators of what a speaker means and what the speaker feels. Consider a very simple example: a mother tells her two-year old to stop running around the house but as she makes her direction, she is smiling. The toddler gets two messages: verbally to stop running; nonverbally the smile means mom is pleased with what he is doing. Which direction will the child follow; probably, the second one - mom is pleased regardless of her words so he will continue doing what he was doing.
Non-verbal communication is a way that humans interact without actually speaking; this has many effects that can be positive or negative. In “Cross-Cultural Communication”, LeBaron states, “we tend to look for nonverbal cues when messages are unclear or ambiguous” (2003). There is a widely growing demand in our society for the essential skills of communication; however, non-verbal communication is the most important way of communicating. As LeBaron explains non- verbal communication, “we use different systems of understanding gestures, postures, silence, spacial relations, emotional expression, touch, physical appearance, and other non-verbal cues” (2003). We, as humans, stereotype many non verbals and can misinterpret them causing discomfort and creating conflict (Sanders, 2014). The main places non-verbals effects are seen of importance are in relationships, schools, and in the workplace.
Verbal and nonverbal communication is everywhere. Wilmot (DeVito, 2003) defines nonverbal communication as, “communication without words” (p.126). Nonverbal communication may, or may not be easy to pickup on, depending on who your are communicating with. For this paper, I decided to go out to the mall, and observe the people there. I would go in stores I like, look around, and closely observe people and their actions.
Communication is a worldwide skill used among people to talk to each other and clarifybeliefs, thoughts and opinions or build relationships with one another; however, this is not the only form of communication. Non-verbal communication entails of communication without words; it is displayed by the body and actions of a person sharing them. Therefore, it is essential to study nonverbal and verbal communication Nonverbal communication is all forms of communication other than words themselves, which includes “body motions; vocal qualities; and the use of time, space, and even smell” (Neuliep, 2011, p. 269). On the other hand verbal communication or language “consists of symbols in the form of spoken or written words (Wood, 2014, p. 67). Thus cultures have different representations of symbols and what one culture interprets another may define or view differently. Communication is closely related to culture because communication expresses and alters culture. In a culture you learn behaviors and acceptable ideologies. This can be seen in verbal and nonverbal communication. For example, the tone of your voice is based on culture. Without communication you are unable to establish cultural differences. Your own culture directly shapes how one communicates, such as when it is appropriate to make eye contact. We are not born knowing when and how we should speak; this is a learned behavior that is taught by interaction with others. This is not an easy task because nonverbal signals differ from culture to culture. Charles Braithwaite stated, “One of the fundamental components of cultural and linguistic competence is knowing how and when to use silence as a communication tactic” (Neuliep, 2011, p. 64). Before one can communicate effectively one must understand the context in which the culture exchanges information. One must have a working awareness of how each society conveys meaning, hence high vs. low context cultures. According to the Central Michigan University text, organizational dynamics and human behavior (2009), to become a successful international manager one must develop “cross-cultural skills”. Non-verbal communication doesn’t involve words, but is a powerful form of communication. The way your body language is tells the other party whether or not you are receiving their message or just listening. When your nonverbal behaviors align with the words you’re saying, they indicate to the person you are communicating with that you are trustworthy. This does not mean that they are bored or annoyed with the speaker; it can be a gesture that they are comfortable with. Viewing gestures as a whole will prevent these misunderstandings.
