Tom Zeller, Jr.’s article, “And Only 34 Years After Billie Jean King Beat Bobby Riggs!” discusses how the 1973 match was a “Battle of the Sexes” and that even at the time King, and other female athletes, were not making nearly as much as their male opponents. The tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs was very significant for a few reasons, but mainly because it had a major impact on Title IX for women in sports. In order to understand a little more about Title IX, I researched it. I found that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was written to end discrimination based on sex, religion, race, color or national origin.
