In the video, Gary Kelly displays several traits and actions on what it takes to be an effective leader. Leadership itself is the compilation of specific skills and traits. Some traits an effective leader has is a vision, communication, admit their mistakes, treatment of others, ability to delegate, and make their employees feel important (Daskal, 2016). In the short video about the Chief Executive Officer of Southwest Airlines, you can identify some of these traits. Taking the time to know the employee’s names that he will be interacting with will mean a lot to these employees. Who does not like to feel appreciated and recognized? In addition, by sitting in the back of the plane displays that the welfare of his customers is more important to him than his own comfort. This sets a good example for the company’s employees as well. Secondly, there are definitely benefits in treating your employees better than your customers. Finally, you should treat your employees the way you want and expect them to treat the customers. Servant leadership has become more of a popular leadership style over the recent years. In a traditional leadership structure, the employees are serving their bosses, but in a Servant Leadership style, the idea is the leader serves the employees (Economy, 2015). In this leadership style, the leaders are said to genially care about their employee’s ideas and input. From experiences, I can say that some of the best ideas could come from your employees in problem-solving strategies. It never hurts to have a fresh pair of eyes that could possibly provide a different view on a situation. After all, if they are going to be the person executing the decision made, why not involve them in the process of how obstacles will be
overcome. After doing a little research on the internet, I was able to get a list of companies that utilize the Servant Leadership model. One company on the list was Starbucks. This is an extremely successful company. They have seemed to expand their empire to every block in every single city across the globe. As a customer of their products from time to time, I really had no idea of their business practices. However, it seems their service to their employees was exceptional. This list includes non-standard benefits, college tuition, and a CEO that believes valued employees leads to a great company (Sivasubramaniam, n.d.). The Marriott was another company on the list, and they are a well-known company as well. I would definitely say they way they treat their employees directly affects the success of these companies. As I stated earlier, employees are the face your companies see when they interact with any company.
Chad Miller, manager of Buffalo Wild Wings in Dubuque, excellently showcases leadership characteristics each time I work with him. Throughout my one and a half years working underneath him, I have witnessed many great exchanges of leadership from Chad to customers, employees, and his other managers. He remains professional, shows his passion for the sports within the restaurant, as well as the food and atmosphere, clearly communicates effectively, and has inspired many people to move up within the company. There has been a bit of research done on the nature of servant leadership. The belief is that many organizations are moving from the traditional style of leadership to a more servant based style. Larry C. Spears (2010) and Kent Keith (2016) note a few characteristics of one who is a servant leader. The characteristics proposed by Spears (2010) are listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to others growth, and community building. The importance of servant leadership should not be underestimated and it can be simplified and embodied in one timeless phrase: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. When applied to leadership the result can be phenomenal. Those who wish to serve do so with their hearts, it is not forced nor is it with resentment. Contemporary organizations expect advantageous styles of leadership to lead and facilitate operations as we move forward into the 21st century. Thus, the success of an organization usually contains successful leaders who understand and support the needs of the employees. Servant leadership can be thought of as an inverted triangle where the leader is supporting the organization at the point. As a result of this leadership style, leaders are more in tune with their teams. They have more insight on their team and the inner workings of their organizations.

Many people want to attain and hold influential positions in society whether it would be in the field of science, politics, education, or in public service. However, many people tend to forget how servitude is one of the main life highways to travel in order to arrive at that successful destination called “Leadership.” Nevertheless, there was one man who knew how powerful the concept of servitude was in order to grasp the reigns of successful leadership. Socrates was a phenomenal philosopher, scholar, teacher, and servant. Socrates leadership style was unique in regards to letting students communicate among one another in an articulate theological reasoning process by questioning and probing at one’s belief system in order to seek self-purification.
To become a truly effective leader, one must encapsulate the various behaviors related to the aforementioned course learnings in his/her persona and demonstrate such behaviors daily. This course has allowed me to identify four behaviors that all leaders must portray to be effective. The first of which is that a leader must be inspirational. To do so, a leader must set the appropriate vision and direction for the organization and provide a path to achieving defined goals. Additionally, a leader must induce the proper levels of motivation so that each employee has sufficient incentive to work towards the organization’s goals. As discussed in the class, motivation can be accomplished by factors such as rewarding hard work and providing the correct opportunities to employees. While these are motivating in that employees desire to be fairly compensated and to be doing work they deem valuable, inspiration comes more from organizational culture. A leader will be inspirational by setting a tone that appreciates each employee’s contribution, no matter how small in scale it is. Further, employees are inspired when they work collaboratively in a group setting and can capitalize on individual strengths to drive organizational goals.
Many Scholars characterize the core qualities and skills necessary for an effective leader. Useem defines leadership as “Creating a vision and translating that vision into actions”. Historically, an effective leader was assumed to be exceptionally knowledgeable, authoritative, and dominate. Those leaders applied the command and control method to lead an organization. With the passage of time, this definition has been changed. The modern definition of an effective leader is honest, courageous, trustworthy, inspirational, and result-oriented. Today’s leaders create shared values and vision, and empower others to achieve their targets.
Although there are many outstanding, albeit necessary qualities of a good leader, it is the leader’s beliefs in which greatness is given its first breath, fostered by action, and spread throughout the institution. A great leader believes in encouraging, not destroying; in setting the precedence instead of yielding to prominence ; in collaboration, not division; in giving, not taking; and in having high standards and volunteering to be the first of many to be held to them. A great leader does not take advantage of the people being lead, but instead, creates an advantage for the people by giving them the opportunities to lead. Only when people take ownership of an institution will passion be cultivated, action be taken, and greatness be achieved.
People always talk about how important it is for companies to have a good leader, someone who not only keeps the blue numbers, but also achieves a loyalty from customers, pleasant working environment, successful business partnerships and ahead of the competition.
Servant leadership, having experienced it personally in my religious organization that despite the fact that leaders have to lead by examples, the challenges is when followers or committee members produce less result overtime.
