California Exit Exam Fails the Test High school graduation exit exams continue to make news across the nation. California, along with 25 other states, requires students to pass a high school exit exam to graduate. For many American students, being valedictorian is quintessential in exhibiting the success one had in high school. The knowledge that out of an entire high school, one person has “topped them all” is a goal that many overachievers diligently strive for. However, despite how ingrained the valedictorian title is in the American high school system, some high schools in the United States have decided to split the honor, or even discard it completely. In a poignant protest, senior fellow at the New America Foundation, Margaret Talbot, in her essay “Best in Class” challenges the notion that the title of valedictorian should be abandoned. By analyzing the impact of different valedictorian policies, Talbot highlights the importance of the valedictorian status in American education by advocating for its continuation. Throughout her essay, Talbot maintains a subjective tone in order to eloquently convince educators and school administration to stick with tradition.
There is more to every student than just their standardized test scores and cumulative GPA. Behind every test score and credit earned is the person who achieved those scores all while living a life. The behind the scenes of every students’ life is the most important part. It is what makes that 4.03 GPA even more exceptional, when the events that took place during that time are unknown. The struggles that were overcome and how every student did the best they could during that time.
“High achievement always takes place in the framework of high expectation” (Charles F. Kettering). Correspondingly, the Bolsa Grande High School Council decided to vote unanimously to raise the GPA from 2.0 to 3.0. The council felt that students should focus more in school rather than participating in a sport or a club. The school council made the correct decision because it develops work habits, helps students go to better colleges, and prepares students for professional life.

State Exams are an unfair way of determining whether a student should or should not receive his or her diploma. Most students work very hard throughout high school to receive good grades. That should be enough to determine whether a student should pass high school. There are many intelligent students which do not have good test taking skills. State exams keep many good students from graduating and teachers have to narrow their lesson plans for these types of State exams. Sometimes they have to teach less because they have to make sure students are ready for the exams. So they end up going back over material instead of moving on. These are all good reasons why state exams should not be required in graduating from high school.
One of the common cliche is that “Students at Harvard never had below A Plus.” There are some truth to this adage. According to College data, it states that the average GPA was 4.04 - way beyond the average of UCs. The average SAT is even more ridiculous --2130 - 2400. Every summer, students, ages from 5th to 11th grade, go to SAT prep session to aim for the “perfect” score. When students at those ages
