Portland Schools: Case Study

The data graphed include six or seven locations from each of the three Portland Schools. The School district tested nearly 00 buildings. Is there enough data here to make any conclusions about the water in Portland schools? What about for schools A, B and C? I believe that these graphs are enough to make a conclusion about Portland schools. For example, in the test it states, “But even low levels are not safe-just safer.” On the graphs of the schools A, B and C, every fountain contains a level of lead. 45% of the fountains contain more lead than the EPA’s action limit. This is already unsafe. Also, the pipes between the schools are most likely connected and made out of the same lead material.

They may have different methods and ways of testing that water. Also, school A shows that it has more lead than schools B and C. Maybe the lab that tested school A had a more precise test.

3. Based on the data presented in the graphs, how do you think each school should respond to the results of the testing? Should students drink the water in the school? Explain your answer. These schools each have at least one fountain that was over the EPA’s action limit. They could replace the pipes. However this could be expensive.. They should take away at the fountains so the kids don’t keep drinking the schools water. Even though the fountains with less leas are safer, over time more and more lead will damage the kids bodies (as it explained in the article).

4. If the water was tested again at each fountain, might the results be different? Explain your answer. The results of the second could be much different than the first test. For example, in the text it explains how when water sits in the pipes for a long period of time, it gets more lead in it. As a result of this the tests would be different because the water could have sat in the pipes over summer or the schools could have continued to use the fountains the same amount of time, so there would be the same amount of
