Functions of Management in a Domestic Environment
The four functions of management are planning, organizing, leading and controlling. While these functions are applied to the business world, they are also applied to everyday family and household matters. The accepted labels attached to these kinds of managers are Domestic Engineers. These managers never leave their humble abodes to work for someone else's company, but hold just as important and responsible positions within their own company. These individuals make up a company within themselves and are responsible for making life acceptable for their families and themselves. This paper will attempt to describe how the four functions of management apply to domestic engineers.
Management
The definition of management can be applied to a domestic engineer in the way that working with family and resources will lead to effectively and efficiently achieving the goals of the household and family needs (T. Bateman & S. Snell, 2007, p. 16). These executives "not only adapt to changing conditions but also applyfanatically, rigorously, consistently, and with disciplinethe fundamental management principles. These fundamentals include the four traditional functions of management: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling" (T. Bateman & S. Snell, 2007, p. 16).
Henir Fayol a French industrialist defined management as consisting of five main activities, planning, organising, commanding, coordinating and controlling. Planning includes defining goals, establishing strategy, and developing plans to coordinate activities. Organising includes determining what tasks are to be done, who is to do them, how the tasks are to be grouped, who reports to whom, and where decisions are to be made. Commanding is telling people what should be done. Coordinating involves determining the timing and sequencing of activities so that they work together properly, allocating the appropriate proportions of resources, times and priority, and adapting means to ends. Controlling is the process of monitoring performance, comparing it with goals, and correcting and significant deviations.
to become secretive with each other which starts to break their relationship. This is seen specifically after the murder of Duncan. Lady Macbeth starts to control Macbeth more and influences his decisions way more than she did before. Throughout this scene it is easy to tell that Lady Macbeth currently had more control in the relationship and had more power over Macbeth himself.
Murray and Dicroce (2003) suggest that management is a process that uses resources to achieve specific goals effectively; basic management functions including planning, organising, coordinating, directing and controlling. The term of manager can be appointed to the person to plan, organise, coordinate, supervise, negotiate, evaluate and use resources available in the best way possible to achieve the best service. “Management is the activity of getting things done with the aid of people and other resources.” (Boddy, D). “The organization and coordination of the activities of a business in order to achieve defined objectives. Management is often included as a factor of production along with machines, materials, and money. According to the management guru Peter Drucker (1909-2005), the basic task of management includes both marketing and innovation.” (Williams, G). Management in an organisation is very important to accomplish the goals and aims of the organisation using available resources. Henri Fayol’s theory of management consisted of six functions that were:
Theodore Roosevelt once said, as quoted by White (2010), “the best executive is one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it.” This great wisdom is too frequently ignored, and at great cost to morale and productivity. In essence, Roosevelt was describing the leader’s fundamental role, leverage the strengths of the team, facilitate their success, and get out of the way of their productivity. Unfortunately in my experience, I have seen several young professional leaders who, due to insecurity in their leadership abilities, or simply inexperience, develop into micromanagers.
Over recent years companies have become less dependent on paper and more dependent on technology. Take American Honda Motors for example; the Davenport Parts facility recently converted computer systems to more efficiently manage its inventory. Prior to its new system months of preparation was needed in order to ensure a smooth change over. Without the four basic functions of management all working together success would not have been possible.
Every type of accommodation, may be private such as house or commercial such as hotels needs to be kept clean and safe so that it looks attractive and inviting to all. The principal idea of housekeeping began from keeping the houses clean and has spread over to commercial sections such as hotels becoming one of the most critical aspects in the industries. Housekeeping can be defined as the department of a hotel which focuses on providing a comfortable, clean and safe environment for the guests. It is an intrinsic part of customer satisfaction and experience. Basically, housekeeping looks after cleanliness and maintenance of the rooms, corridors, lobbies, additionally
This paper will cover the major four functions dealing with the principles of management. Which are: “Planning, Organizing, Leading and Controlling,” and what each of these functions involves. I have learned that it is very important that a manager understands each one of these managerial components which allows one the power to navigate through numerous procedural, interpersonal, and structural challenges in the process of guiding one 's team to the completion of goals that have been set forth for them. Therefore, “planning, organizing, leading and controlling,” demand that managers become good decision makers.
“In 1991, Microsoft Corp. became the first software company to create its own computer science research organization. Microsoft has developed into a unique entity among corporate research labs, balancing an open academic model with an effective process for transferring its research to product development teams. Microsoft recognizes that to create the foundation for future technology breakthroughs, it is necessary to support long-term computer science research that is not bound by product cycles” (http://www.calibex.com/serv/calibex1/buyer/outpdir.jsp?search=microsoft+products). Today, the world-renowned scientists of Microsoft Research make up one of the largest, fastest-growing, and most highly respected software research organizations in the world — one that will help define and redefine the computing experience for millions of people for decades to come”
Thus, executives can better manage the company to improve the company 's productivity and interests. In my personal reflection, Future research in this area could not only focus on the relationship between employers and employees but also pay more attention to employees and their family. This would provide a more specific picture of how to let the company which consists of every individual subordinate 's family become a more favorable ecosystem.
Roberts(n.d) discusses that the management process involves many different functions. Such as, being sure that your company 's goals are being reached, employees are being motivated to be more proactive, and being able to resolve difficult confrontations . Also, it can be seen in this article that the five main functions of management also play an important part in the life and successful of a business. The five main functions in management are Planning, Coordinating , Controlling, staffing, and organizing. The main reason for Planning is for management to be able to achieve their goal for a their company or business. This can be done mainly through organization. Coordination is primarily used for keeping organization during special events or other activities that must be planned ahead of time. Coordination would be helping a business because it would be organized. Also, Controlling can be seen as a major key when managing a business. This is because the standards of a business would be kept at a positive when it came to many big factors. Such as employees and realizing what problems may occur. In addition, staffing may also be seen as important. Staffing is used for the employees of a business. This vital importance shows who is right for the hiring position, as well as who is capable to assist the business in progressing.
Management is a task of organising people and work .It is an interdisciplinary and international field that has evolved in bits and pieces over the year. Organisations are required to complete a given task according to schedule and pre-determined programme. The work and the labour has to be divided to complete the task effectively and efficiently. The people are made to
It explores how a task situation is structured to get the highest production from employees. Taylor states that the primary goal of management must be to maintain the maximum well-being of the employees while realising the maximum welfare of the employer. He came up with four principles of management which helps both managers and employees to be more productive at work. The first principle looks at coming up with different ways to replace the ‘rule of thumb’ practices of management. He proposed that the different way is to be scientific whereby the managers will be in a position to analyse the problems which the management encounter during the production process within the organisation. The second principle entails offering training sessions, selecting and giving work development to every worker. This was different from earlier methods which involved poor management, where workers could train and rule themselves on different tasks in the factories. By using this principle, he discovered that the person who is highly qualified will take the top position within the organisation and lead others in an efficient and systematic manner. Also, systematic management led to the development of a payment method where the amount of output the worker did was compared to the workers efficiency in production of quality goods and services. This improved the way the management managed work and
function, managers need to analyse how activities and resources are to be grouped and carry out plans successfully (Bartol 2007). A manager have to understand their ability to manage the lower level employee which is the most valuable of the company as they are the key of output and implement in the planning. Then manager will coordinate the jobs between authority and responsibility that is to define the role position of them (MSG 2012).
Throughout the twentieth century, management might be considered as the most crucial innovation; it is the most directly impact of the young and educated people in colleges or universities who is going to be future’s knowledge workers in managed organisations (Drucker & Maciariello, 2008). For the primary functions of management, Fayol (1916) first defined it as planning, organising, staffing and controlling (Fayol cited in Northouse, 2013).
