Argos & Future Development
INTRODUCTION:
What is management?
“Management is the activity of getting things done with the aid of people and other resources.” (Boddy, D). “The organization and coordination of the activities of a business in order to achieve defined objectives. Management is often included as a factor of production along with machines, materials, and money. According to the management guru Peter Drucker (1909-2005), the basic task of management includes both marketing and innovation.” (Williams, G). Management in an organisation is very important to accomplish the goals and aims of the organisation using available resources. Henri Fayol’s theory of management consisted of six functions that were:
• Forecasting: Forecasting is an assumption, it is used to predict where the business will be in the future, it helps set and achieve aims and objectives.
• Planning: Planning helps in leading the business towards it aims, and achieving them in time. Planning formulates strategies to achieve the company’s objectives.
• Organizing: Organizing is assembling the required resources to achieve organizational objectives.
• Commanding: Commanding is important for an organization because it suggests that managers should supervise their subordinates in their daily work, and communicate with them.
• Coordinating: Coordinating in an organization is very important, so that the managers and the workers are both on the same page and know what their tasks are.
• Controlling: Controlling is just a check by the managers to insure that the work force are in line with the general company policies.

Henir Fayol a French industrialist defined management as consisting of five main activities, planning, organising, commanding, coordinating and controlling. Planning includes defining goals, establishing strategy, and developing plans to coordinate activities. Organising includes determining what tasks are to be done, who is to do them, how the tasks are to be grouped, who reports to whom, and where decisions are to be made. Commanding is telling people what should be done. Coordinating involves determining the timing and sequencing of activities so that they work together properly, allocating the appropriate proportions of resources, times and priority, and adapting means to ends. Controlling is the process of monitoring performance, comparing it with goals, and correcting and significant deviations.
Lastly, the fourth management function is controlling and it helps observe employee's actions and checking the progress towards achieving the goal. Managers at PacSun have a specific way of controlling, for example: observing, coaching, and following up with each employee on his or her performance. Observing the employee when he or she was assigned a task can reveal if the employee is doing his or her job correctly. Secondly, coaching can be difficult if managers are unsure how to criticize employee's work. "Since you can't always offer better job opportunities, your coaching stance must place the emphasis on where it properly belongs — on continuous learning on the job, and the growing of skills wherever and whenever possible" (Nigro). Because managers control in PacSun, employees can understand how different tasks should be done correctly and effectively.
Planning is a way to respond to the changes occurring in the environment around a person systematically. Planning is an approach towards the problem solving rationally. It can be taken as a remedial tool for creating change in the current situation in systematic and efficient way.
In coordinating, managers give the task to the employees as a framework .These helps to accomplished the objectives and developing and make effective decision.
Controlling in management is a function of management that is concerned with making sure that all other functions of the management are put in place and operated effectively. Controlling ensures that it has taken into consideration the monitoring of the output of the employees as well as the establishing standards of performance that will guarantee that the performance of the will always meets the set standards (Spellman,
“Controlling: monitors progress and implements necessary changes where needed. Monitoring is an essential aspect of control” (Bateman & Snell, 2004, p. 18).
"In everyday language usage, management refers to the people in organizations who manage, and to the activities they perform." (Fulop, Frith, Hayward 1992 p. 187) To be more specific, management is the process of organizing work activities with and through people to ensure the activities are completed efficiently and effectively (Robbins, Bergman, Stagg, Coulter 2006, p. 9). Through management, the goals of the organization or business are to be achieved. Henri Fayol, one of the most influential contributors to modern concepts of management, proposed that there are five primary functions for management, which consist of planning, organizing, commanding, coordinating and controlling. Nonetheless, the functions of commanding and coordinating have metamorphosed into leading (Crainer 2003).
Leading is the management function that involves the manager's efforts to stimulate high performance by employees. There is a big difference between leading and managing. Each organization requires a balance of both. Too much of one will result in your organization failing to meet its goals. Managers tell people what to do, to reach the organizations goals. Leaders also tell people what to do, but they make the employee want to do what is necessary to achieve the goal. In my business, leadership is monumental in us making a profit. The people that work for me feel a part of a team. We do what we can to help motivate our workers and that in turn creates a higher performance rate. Each organization needs leaders to guide all in the direction and vision of the company.
Business forecasting is the process of studying historical performance for the purpose of using the knowledge gained to project future business conditions so that decisions can be made today that will aid in the achievement of established goals. Forecasting plays a crucial role in today's uncertain global marketplace. Forecasting is traditionally either qualitative or quantitative, with each offering specific advantages and disadvantages.
Controlling is the fourth management function and its purpose is straightforward- to make sure that actual performance meets or surpasses objectives. It is well used for decision making and problem solving. Effective control depends on other management functions and it gives feedback to them. These functions are planning, organizing and leading. Planning sets directions and allocates resources. Organizing puts people and material resources together in working combinations. Leading motivates people to use these resources in the best way. Basically, the function of controlling is to make sure that the right things happen in a right time and in the right way.Control helps that overall directions of individuals and groups are consistent with short-range and long-range organizational plans. Also, it helps to ensure that objectives and accomplishments are coherent with one another throughout an organization. Moreover, it helps maintaining fulfillment with essential organizational rules and policies. Good example where we can see role of control is in helping to protect individual rights to become equivalent with employment opportunities at work. The control process practiced by managers includes four steps: 1) establish objectives and standards 2) measure actual performance 3) compare results with objectives and standards and 4) take actions if necessary1. The controlling process starts with establishing performance objectives and standards which means that the controlling process begins with planning. Performance objectives should be defined and associated with specific measurement standards for determining how well they are accomplished. Standards are the targets of performance. The next step of the control process would be measur...
Organizing: Builds up structures, materials and human. Forecasting: Provide means, examine the future, draw up the action plans. Control: Seeing that everything occurs in conformity with established rules. Commanding: binds together and harmonizes the activity and
In these organizations, managers mainly are responsible to supervising the work performance of the group members and deciding the use of resources to achieve the organization¡¦s goal.
Management plays a significant role in how business operates. The diversity of approaches to the theoretical and practical background of management has come up with several versions of what is meant by such key words as management and organization. The academia views expressed in relation to management theories take a different role than that prescribed to managers. There has not been any concrete definition of management even though the classic definition of Henri fayol still remains in contention to be the preferred choice after eighty years. In the context of what is required I would like to elaborate on the following journals.
Our first pioneer was Henry Fayol. Fayol was one of the pioneers who were accountable for constructing the modern management theory. Before Fayol created his principle his company who was currently was facing difficulty and with the experiences he had and the principles he created he was able to turn the mining company around. “Henri Fayol 's "14 Principles of Management" have been a significant influence on modern management theory. His practical lists of principles helped early 20th century managers learn how to organize and interact with their employees in a productive way” (Henry Fayol Principles of
The first function of management is planning. Planning is a process that managers use to identify and involve goal setting and decide the best way to achieve the goal.(Bartol 2007) Planning connect the gap between where we do, where we intend to go. It predict the possible things to happen which would not otherwise happen (MSG 2012). There are several steps to the planning process, which are determine the goals of the organisation, evaluate the current position, consider possible future conditions, identify possible alternative actions and choose the best. Planning is the criteria thinking through goals and making decision to achieve the goal of the organisation’s objective, which requires a systematic way. Also objectives focus the managers how to achieve the final result as managers have to predict anything will happen, avoid the problem and fight back to competitors. An example of planning, which is the President Canon Inc Tsuneji Uchida and lead Canon Company become the no.1 in the global business (Canon.Inc 2011). Tsuneji Uchida has to understand what is the company objective and goal. First, make decision to protect the position and the aim of canon, improve the operation more diversity. Second, he creates the new design of camera and new technology, he plan to do these things to maximise profit.
