Fractional Distillation Lab Report

947 Words2 Pages

Fractional distillation is the separation of a liquid mixture into its different fractions; fractions are the different parts of a mixture. In this case we went through and boiled our mixture to find the plateau of the substances in the mixture. A plateau is a state of little to no change after a time of progress. We also used filtration by evaporation which is used to separate a soluble solid from a liquid. Throughout this investigation we watched for the characteristic properties and to check the solubility we used solute and solvent. Solute is the minor component in the solution which goes into the solvent. The solvent is something that dissolves the solute.
In this investigation we were trying to find the different substances in the mixture. We …show more content…

· There appears to be sand at the bottom of the test tube.
· Boiling rocks in the test.
· Smells like acetone.
· The powder after we had cooked the mixture reminds me of moon dough.
