Have you ever wondered how much a substance can dissolve in a given amount of water? My project will determine how much table salt, epsom salt and sugar will dissolve in distilled water. Distilled water is water that is purified by distillation which is when you heat up water and get rid of the natural minerals that are usually found in the water. You can’t drink this kind of water because it doesn’t have the minerals that we need. Out of the three substances, I think the table salt will dissolve the fastest because it is an ionic substance and water is a polar substance. A polar substance is when they have a negative and a positive electrical charge. This makes the water surround the salt molecules and makes it dissolve. Throughout The Awakening, water the main motif serves as a catalyst to the metamorphosis of Edna. During the length of the story Edna goes through a process of changes that coincides with the presence of water. Water serves as a conduit for liberation and empowerment that facilitates the rebirth and even death of Edna. In this essay I will argue that the motif of water represents the continual transformations that occur within Edna throughout the story.

Solutions have three different stages that the solutes can be classified in: isotonic, hypertonic, and hypotonic. Isotonic is when the solutions have equal amounts of solutes. Like equilibrium, there is no net change in the amount of water in either solution. When the solutions have different concentration of solutes then the one with less solute is hypotonic and the one with more solute is hypertonic. Hypotonic takes in the solute from the hypertonic side that gives away the solute.

The researcher thinks it will increase the boiling point in water the most because it has the highest amount of sodium chloride present. Common salt is said to be the most used matter in the chemical world. Salt is translucent and can create electricity if melted. It is also known to melt ice or snow because it can be added to water to create a mixture that has a lower freezing point than purified water (Aasen, et Al 1999).
This experiment was conducted to determine if table salt, Epsom salt, sea salt, kosher salt can be more affective in melting ice faster. After performing the experiment, my hypothesis that table salt would dissolve the ice cube faster than using sea salt, kosher salt, or Epsom salt was correct. The table salt took the least amount of time to melt the ice cube with an average of 24 minutes. Then came kosher salt with an average time of 31 minutes. Thirdly was the sea salt with an average of 33 minutes. Finally, the Epsom salt took the longest time to dissolve the ice cube with an average of 47 minutes. The table salt melted the ice faster than the kosher salt, and Epsom salt because a granule of the table salt is the smallest so there is more weight than the other 3 salts in equal volume. Also, the finer the salt particles put in contact with an ice cube, the quicker it will combine with the water forming the ice cube and begin the melting
Solubility is defined as the maximum amount of a substance that will dissolve in a given amount of another substance at constant temperature and pressure. Solubility is typically expressed in terms of maximum volume or mass of the solute that dissolve in a given volume or mass of a solvent. Traditionally the equilibrium solubility at a given pH and temperature is determined by the shake flask method. According to this method the compound is added in surplus to a certain medium and shaken at a predetermined time. The saturation is confirmed by observation of the presence of un-dissolved material. Sodium Chloride has a higher boiling point than water, so when salt is added to water, the solution has a higher boiling point than pure water. The sodium ions and chloride ions present in sodium chloride disassociate and dissolve in water. These ions interfere with the dipole interactions that occur between molecules of water. The dissolved sodium ions and chloride ions require more energy to separate from the water molecules in the solution than the water molecules from themselves, so the boiling point of the solution is elevated as a result.2
Water is the most important molecule that exists on the Earth. Without water living beings would not be able to live. Water is used for an immeasurable number of things. There are many properties of water, which makes this molecule so unique. One which people overlook is hardness. Hardness is defined in the Chemistry: The Central Science by Prentice Hall's as being "water that contains a relatively high concentration of Ca2+, Mg2+, and other divalent cations." Water containing these ions is not a health hazard; however, it is a problem for industries and households. Therefore, the hardness of water is vital to understand in order to prevent the problems it could cause.

Substances that produce ions in solution are called electrolytes and the strength of the electrolyte depends on how well it can break apart into ions when dissolved in a solvent. Soluble ionic salts are labelled as strong electrolytes as they are able to completely dissociate from each other.

In fact, this amount has been continuously to decrease as more and more industries began to pollute and damage the water. For example, many toxic chemicals may be released into the water thus making the water impure. Such pollutions and damages lead the water to be contaminated and inconsumable as it may cause severe diseases. Water purification can remove all the unnecessary bacteria and viruses from the water that is hazardous for our health. Water purification may also improve the flavor and appearance of water. It removes the unpleasant odor. Therefore, water purification became one of the most useful and popular process used by people all over the world today. It is by far the most recommended and safest water treatment that is commonly used to purify damaged water into consumable water. Water purification provides us with safe, pure and clean water to consume and use.
