Flexible Work Schedules The nine to five work hours are a thing of the past, no longer a mandatory work schedule or shift required. People have much more control over their work schedules, making their work time to coincide with their personal time. This makes things much easier and less stressful for everyone involved. Some of the choices I will talk about being terms called work schedules, telecommuting, job sharing and compressed workweek. This is not necessarily a new concept, just a well-kept secret from the past. Flexible work schedules are amazing and can help anyone having a hard time with too many overwhelming things on their plate at one time and trying to get to work on time and keep their job. Good workers are hard to find and keep. By working with your supervisor or boss, everyone involved has a say and point to make and communication is a key in a successful working relationship. It is good to know what options are out there and not every company offers the same type of work schedule options. Some schedule options that could be available maybe Job sharing, where you share a job with another person, dividing the time up between the two of you. Where working different times and days or someone works the mornings while the other works the afternoons. Telecommuting, which is when you take your work with you to another location. This could be your home, an office closer or further away needing you their part of the time. Lastly, there is something called a compressed work week. This schedule is commonly used for longshoremen or offshore men. These workers usually work five weeks on and get two to three weeks off before returning to work again. Previous generations have a strong belief of keeping work and home life separate; that work is for work and home is for play (Rampell, 2011, para 21). Today’s professionals do not seem to abide by similar beliefs, constantly crossing the borders of one into the other. While many recognize this as an issue that could result in employees being less productive, it has actually resulted in them accepting that their work may run late into the evening or even into the weekend. I agree with this completely in that I grew up being taught that business is business and personal is personal; you leave your home life at the door. But now times have changed, and my weekends are no longer dedicated to my home life, but for work, because I attend classes during the week. Also, in my line of work in the Allied Health industry, it is a requirement to work off hours. The textbook offered a sociological analysis of the nature of work in the new economy, such as the new opportunities in this economy as well and the challenges many workers now face and ultimately how this change the family lives of many. The book also discussed about the new face of the workplace and work in general, which includes issues on inequality and discrimination. The book discussed job security, policies and why workers work more now than they did before or work in 24/7 economy. Lastly, the book talks about the ways on how to face all the challenges in this new economy and work environment.
This source explains the relationship between working overtime and the work-family conflict. With this source, they “investigated whether work-family conflict is prospectively related to adjustments in work schedules… in this relation”. (Jansen) They also wanted to prevent work- family conflict. They also know that balancing work and family is a challenge in today’s society for individuals. Consequences associated with work and family “job burnouts, psychological distress, depression, life dissatisfaction, elevated need for recovery from work, prolonged fatigue, and increased sickness absence”. (Jansen) The companies are starting to notices that employees are looking for other jobs that support them balance their work and family. Jansen used questionnaires to figure out the work-family conflict investigation. Each questionnaire was use with different types of working people. For example, the part-time and full-time workers. The results for the work-family conflict, “employees might adjust their working time arrangement to better reconcile work and family life…” (Jansen) They are considering their next research on the adjustments to “result in an improved work-family balance, improved health outcomes, and ultimately whether these adjustments prevent workers from leaving the labor force early.” (Jansen)

Work is apart of every ones daily routine. There are always some kind of work that needs do be done like deadlines, pressing assignments from a boss, and bills and taxes that need to be paid. All these tasks building up can lead to a variety of negative impacts. The need to finish work between the hours of 8 to 5 can become stressful. It is difficult to balance multiple tasks and complete them within a time limit. Having the stress and pressure of trying to complete numerous tasks at a time, and working too much could lead to being workaholics.

In Today’s world, the composition and how work is done has massively changed and is still continuing to change. Work is now more complex, more team base, depends greatly on technological and social skills and lastly more mobile and does not depend on geography.
