Proles and Systematic Subjugation Essay By: Robin Arsenault George Orwell’s book “1984”, symbolizes obedience, oppression, and control. It was written in 1949 to demonstrate the consequences of having a totalitarian form of government, which Orwell strongly disagreed with. Orwell emphasizes strongly in the book the Parties ability to take away individuality and freedom by using manipulation tactics, fear and constant surveillance; limiting societies potential at achieving a progressive future. The theme of systematic subjugation is vividly demonstrated throughout the book. “They were not loyal to a party or a country or an idea, they were loyal to one another.” Part 2, chapter 7, refers to the proles and how they are marginalized from the rest of society. Instead of being loyal to ‘Big Brother’ like the rest of society, they choose to be loyal to each other. The proles are free to love and live freely despite the Parties oppression since they are not strictly monitored. We see this in modern-day society as well. “The working or lower class” refers to those who make up the lowest level of society. These individuals often work in low-paying, blue collar jobs that require physical labor and limited skills. Working or lower class individuals earn much less than the upper and middle class and hold little power in society.” Writes Will Kenton in an article regarding the upper, middle and lower classes. With this we can infer that the proles from the book are representatives of modern societies working class who are often looked down upon by the Party representing the upper class.We often see the Party oppressing the proles and limiting their opportunities happening in modern society as
