In the United States there are thousands of jobs available to the everyday person, and with each job the working requirements vary. Employers all over the country allow their employees to work flexible schedules that have various hours. But how well do these schedules work? To figure this out, looking at how a schedule positively affects the employees at work, how it can negatively affect employees, and how a flexible work schedules can impact corporate offices, provides a better understanding.
A flexible work schedule can benefit employees in many ways. There are two commonly known types of flexible work schedules. The first one would be working from home. Working from home provides an employee the ability to do their work on their own schedule, at their own pace. There is little to no requirement on what hours the employee will need to work, allowing them to manage their work and personal life. The second type of schedule is when a company allows employees to come in for a certain amount of hours a day. Similar to working from home the employee is given the ability to work around their schedule, but the employee must be in the workplace for the required time limit. When working from home the negatives can outweigh the positives. Children and pets can be some of the common distractions that can cause issues in the at home workspace. An issue that comes when allowing the employees to freely come in at whatever hours suits them is the amount of workers. In a company such as a grocery store this could be a giant problem. Grocery stores have multiple departments, and the majority of employees are trained in only one department. If the workers were free to come into work whenever they wanted, the majority of departments would find themselves under or overstaffed. This source explains the relationship between working overtime and the work-family conflict. With this source, they “investigated whether work-family conflict is prospectively related to adjustments in work schedules… in this relation”. (Jansen) They also wanted to prevent work- family conflict. They also know that balancing work and family is a challenge in today’s society for individuals. Consequences associated with work and family “job burnouts, psychological distress, depression, life dissatisfaction, elevated need for recovery from work, prolonged fatigue, and increased sickness absence”. (Jansen) The companies are starting to notices that employees are looking for other jobs that support them balance their work and family. Jansen used questionnaires to figure out the work-family conflict investigation. Each questionnaire was use with different types of working people. For example, the part-time and full-time workers. The results for the work-family conflict, “employees might adjust their working time arrangement to better reconcile work and family life…” (Jansen) They are considering their next research on the adjustments to “result in an improved work-family balance, improved health outcomes, and ultimately whether these adjustments prevent workers from leaving the labor force early.” (Jansen)
We have all experienced a jet-lag before, which means we feel tired or even sick because of the time zone change that we have experienced during traveling. This change of sleeping pattern also occurs in the daily lives of those who work with irregular working hours. In hospitals it is very common to change shifts from day to night time due to the fact that hospitals are needed all day around, every day of the year. The staff members mostly take turns with the night shift, which is of course not an arbitrary decision. Due to the increasing demand for flexible working hours, there is also an increase of concerns in safety and productivity regarding the employees. This analysis discusses certain mental and physical health problems that occur with shift-work in hospitals and how these effects can hinder performance. Furthermore I will compare theory with real life practice in the field of shift work.

Imbalanced, our lives are imbalanced. We do not have time to climb the ladder of success if we want to be home to raise our children. We do not have time to raise our children if we want to climb the ladder of success. There are not enough hours in the day to do all the things that we need to do to have a fulfilled life. We do not have time to cook a healthy meal from scratch. We grab a box of Hamburger Helper, a can of peas, and a bag of rolls and we have dinner. Exercise consists of walking between the car and the door and maybe a little wrestling around with the kids before bed. At work productivity is counted by how many hours you spend doing your job instead of the results that our produced in that time. Mindsets like this hold us back. Flexibility for the employee is the future to balancing our lives.

However, evidence suggests that safety and productivity of workers may decline at night shifts with more hours on duty between breaks. For most people, a chance to work at home would be ideal. Paper work and long term considerations for companies may actually be planned better at home as opposed to a busy work office or cubical. Professionals such as accountants, consultants, marketing professionals and other information-age workers can benefit from telecommuting (people who work at home). This is not to say that all work would be completed at home. There will be times when actual face to face meetings will be necessary for such problems as office disputes and responding to co-workers needs. Working at home will allow for any task in which being alone is not a hindrance.
In the workplace, time management is an important factor in everyone’s day-to-day work. If a person’s time is well managed, it is possible to achieve a greater amount in a shorter space of time. How effectively people manage their time has a major influence on aspects of their working lives and their personal lives. Effective time management can have a hugely positive effect on a person, it can lead to a focused and disciplined mentality, giving a higher level of productivity, greater efficiency and an all round positive attitude in life. This benefits the individual, their team, the company they work for and also their friends and family. An example of this is an employee who prioritises their jobs at the start of the day; this gives them a structured day and ensures they have time to complete all of the important jobs. However, if time is poorly managed it can lead to inefficiencies, work overload and added pressure, this could eventually lead on to other issues such as stress.

Often overlooked is the impact telecommuting has on the environment. One great advantage for the environment is the conservation of energy. A great deal of energy is required to produce a vast amount of transportation vehicles such as automobiles, buses and subways.
After all it is the employee responsibility to manage their career while balancing a flexible schedule (Healy). My recommendations are by implementing telecommuting MedEx would have the advantage of incurring flexible hours which would be a benefit for the employee by reducing high stress levels and balancing their other responsibilities. MedEx would benefit by reducing the high turnover rate and costly overhead.
