Having spoken to Officer Brietzke at length about law enforcement, I am pretty sure that is the direction I will go with my career is firefighting, not law enforcement. Many aspects of both careers are similar, and my education so far has been in Emergency Management which can go both ways. For instance, I totally understand the adrenaline rush from dealing with an emergency and helping people because that is the same thing in the fire department. I have changed my main firehouse because the one closest to my home does not receive many fire calls. I went searching for the action, which I have found where I am now. By nature, the civil service hiring process gives no preference to candidates who have received training in their prospective field. No matter what a candidate’s level of fire training, they will be required, upon hire, to attend the Ohio Fire Academy to obtain (or re-obtain) their 240-hour State Of Ohio firefighting certification. This means that fire science students aspiring to join CFD will duplicate their efforts. With over 6,000 applicants in 2011 the odds of obtaining a position at CFD seem slim. On October 13th I was fortunate enough to be able to interview Sandi Lopez. Lopez is from Grand Island, Nebraska and has also lived in Kansas for a few years. At first she was not quite sure on what to do with her career pathway. She wanted a job where she could be able to help others and her community. At some point in our lives, everybody eventually comes in contact with a law enforcement officer, some people for different reasons. Law enforcement officers work around the clock to keep citizens safe. Many people do not know a lot of things about law enforcement, some of those will be discussed. Every year communities struggle each year around the nation with issues of life safety. In 2012, the nation’s fire departments responded to 31,854,000 responses that resulted in the deaths 0f 2,855 civilians and injuring 16,500 causing an estimated $12,427 million dollars in damage. (United States Fire Administration, 2014) These incidents put at risk 345,950 career and 783,300 volunteer firefighters that resulted in the deaths of 81 individuals (U.S. Department of Homeland Security, 2013) and nearly 70,000 reported injuries. ( Karter & Molis, 2013) These numbers represent incidents that are determined to be in the line of duty but do not take into consideration the long-term health risk issues that may develop. Evidence shows that he hazards associated with Fire and Emergency Services are consistent across the board whether paid or volunteer and jeopardize the lives and health of each individual, placing administrative and physical control measures reduces this risk to firefighter within an organization. While it is impossible to eliminate the hazards firefighters face, it is important to identify these hazards as the first step in reducing the potential for loss of life and wellbeing both physically and mentally.

My highest personal preference is working with people, learn by doing, lead by taking charge, taking risks, and enjoy participating in teams. My Career The career field I chose is to be a firefighter. The reason why I want to be a firefighter is because they help people and prevent fires from spreading. All throughout highschool I was part of various teams. Whether it be for sports or school, I learned at a young age how to work alongside my peers effectively. In addition, I joined a police explorers post in high school and was able to learn what it was like to be a police officer and ensured myself that this was the career I wanted to have. Following high school, I knew that I wanted to attend a University where I would get a more advanced educational background while surrounding myself in a much more diverse community. In addition, I started working for the UW Oshkosh Police Department the first semester I got to UW Oshkosh. This department taught me what it was like to work in this setting as well as giving me a wide range of training and experiences preparing me for the job. Through working patrol, and eventually dispatching, I developed many skills. Advancing my abilities to communicate with people and getting more advanced at problem solving are just two of these skills that make me very qualified for this
In the past eight years as a police officer for the City of South Salt Lake, I have found that personal growth and achievement in my career have been based on certain past experiences. Such experiences have molded what my personality is today. I have found that in order to be triumphant in my personal and professional goals, it has been necessary for me to reflect not only on my strides, but also my mistakes.
Ever since I was young boy I had always dreamed of becoming a soldier. Having a job that allowed me to help people and become a hero always sounded the most appealing. Firefighting has been a thankless job since the beginning. It started out as a group of people with one objective; to extinguish a fire. They did not worry about the consequences or repercussions from not having any personal protective equipment. The equipment to help keep all firemen safe has drastically changed from being non-existence to the upmost importance. Without safety equipment, firemen cannot perform their job to the best of their ability. Firemen use turnout gear which has three major parts; helmet, jacket, and SCBA.
