At some point in our lives, everybody eventually comes in contact with a law enforcement officer, some people for different reasons. Law enforcement officers work around the clock to keep citizens safe. Many people do not know a lot of things about law enforcement, some of those will be discussed. Those topics are agency administration, issues with law enforcement in today’s society, and law enforcement history. To start off, agency administration can vary from department to department. The agency’s administration will depend on what kind of department they are. A police department is a law enforcement agency that is governed by the city, whereas a sheriff’s department is governed by the county. A sheriff’s department is higher up than a police department. For example, a sheriff’s department can patrol in city limits, but a police department cannot patrol outside of city limits. That being said, in rural areas, the police department and sheriff’s department have mutual aid, which simply means that if the sheriff’s department needs assistance outside of city limits, the police department will assist them, and vice versa. The ranks in law enforcement are similar to a military ranking system. In a police department, you start as a police officer. Within the police officer rank, there are also the ranks of police officer I, police officer II, and
This issue has greatly worsened within the last two years. It all started with the officer involved shooting in Ferguson. A tension arose after this shooting, many claiming that today’s law enforcement was racially discriminating. These same people just got madder about the whole situation. Many of these people turned to hate crimes, such as burning buildings down, rioting, looting, and some even killing law enforcement officers. In many’s opinion, it should be brought to a stop when officers are being killed just because they are a law enforcement
The job of a law enforcement officer sometimes can be tough. Officer are sometimes plagued with situation that test their ability to enforce the law and maintain order. Police officers today face a constant battle to maintain higher ethical standards. This mission becomes tougher each day when one considers the importance of fighting terrorism, drugs, human trafficking,
Police corruption is a difficult issue cities have to deal with and one of the oldest problems in the police force. Corruption can be defined as the mistreatment of public power for personal benefit or private and the use of excessive force, either emotional or physical. In this essay I will explain in detail federal indictments of Los Angeles County Sheriff officers for mistreatment of jail inmates and visitors. Another topic I will explain is the transfer of Los Angeles County Sheriff hired officers with questionable background. Finally, I will end by analyzing the hiring of new Sheriff deputies under the “Friends of the Sheriff” program.
Throughout history there has been many problems involving racial profiling and police misconduct. Very rarely do police get the proper punishment for their wrong doings. One of the most recent cases was the Oscar Grant case. Oscar Grant was 22 years old when he was killed because of police misconduct. He was killed on New Year’s Day 2009 by Ex-BART cop Johannes Mehserle. This misconduct made the people of Oakland extremely angry because they lost one of their own. After the shooting many people around Oakland started protesting. This lasted for months on end because people were very angry. Bystanders videotaped the incident. This has been one of the most racially polarizing cases in California (Ravindhran).
A police officer is a warranted law employee of a police force. In the United States, "officer" usually is the formal name of the lowest police rank. What do police officers do? Duties of Police officers are generally to apprehend criminals, prevent and detect crime, protect and assist the general public, and the maintenance of public order. In order to become a police officer one may need to go through some of the application process requirements. Some of them are to be at least 20 years of age,be a US citizen, be mentally and physically sound, no history of criminal or improper conduct, and a High school Diploma or equivalency. Given all the information, Police officers have a lot of power. Police officers can end lives, arrest or detain
In law enforcement, discretion is left up to each police officer to make responsible and reasonable decisions on situations while in the field. A police officer will have no choice but to use discretion in certain situations and make decisions on what type of force or punishment is necessary for the situations. Many people in the society always believe that police officers can make any decision they wish to at any time while working. This is very wrong because there are situations whereby a police officer or even the chief of police has no other choice, but to follow the law in making decisions. The role of the police administrator is double challenging because, he/she must determine how best to use discretion as well as encourage or dissuade discretion by subordinate members ...
It is necessary for different ranking levels to resolve issues. For example, the “Chief” of an organization does not always have time to answer all of the little questions or deal with every issue. When there is a chain of command, the lower level employees can utilize the chain of command to help resolve issues in a timely manner. Without this structure, employees would “flood” the “chief” with all of the issues, and the supervisors will be kept out of the loop of what’s going on. Nevertheless, I believe the paramilitary structure will work in policing for the reasons, information flows up the chain of command from the street officer to the police administration and orders and commands flow down the chain to the street officer. The chain of command and the paramilitary structure have been retained, regardless to the complexity of the police bureaucracy. Therefore, no matter how defined the hierarchy is or how flat the structure is, the goal was to be more consistent with community-oriented policing (Travis,
The Black Lives Matter Movement (BLM) that has spread over recent years is destroying police-black citizen relations. They are constantly spreading hateful propaganda and creating danger for the number-one protector of black lives, police officers. BLM is damaging race relations in addition to putting police in danger. The organization is reversing years of wounds that throw us back into race-relations from decades ago. Another way the relationship of black men and police officers is being harmed is by the lack of respect that is being given to officers. Subsequently, police have backed down on their proactive methods and therefore weakened our justice system, and the effects of a weak justice system could be deadly. Americans have to change
Police shootings occur all over the world but are a huge problem within the United States. We continue to hear more and more about them. These shootings are making headlines. Front page news it seems almost weekly. All the shootings go one of two ways. Either a Police Officer has been shot or a Police Officer has shot a citizen, but either way the final result is death. Whether an Officer has been shot or an Officer has shot someone these cases seem to be related to one thing, fear. People in today’s society feel as though they can’t trust Police Officers as they are there to hurt and kill them. And Police Officers feel as though they are in danger of doing their everyday duties because people see them as the “bad guys” and want to hurt or kill them. Yes, police brutality and racism still exist, but not all cops are bad. Yes there are still bad citizens in this world that want to kill and harm others, but not all citizens are bad. People seem to react to these shootings by rioting quickly after a police officer has shot and killed someone without
America is currently living in a period where racial divide is the highest it has been in a long time. There is a divide between police officers and citizens, but most notably a divide between police officers and people of color. Alton Sterling, Freddie Gray, Sandra Black, Philando Castile, etc. have all been cases where a life has been lost at the hand of a police officer.
Police brutality and racism are an ongoing problem in our country. It goes back hundreds of years with no sign of it stopping. Police officers have been abusing their power since they have been around. Abuse against African American males by white police officers is getting out of hand. Most officers face no punishment at, and all there is a special code that they follow. Officers follow The “Blue Code of Silence”, which is a code that means they look out for one another. Even with video recording devices, the news, and social media, these events still go on. African Americans take most of the abuse and it looks like there is no end to this. This is a reflection on our society, and it makes us look ignorant to what is going on around us.
Law enforcement has many roles in the criminal justice process. The duties preformed by police officers include traffic citations, criminal investigations, emergency response, and crime prevention. Police officers are here to enforce all laws that are set by the government. When police officers encounter

Law Enforcement: Also called Police Officers. Police Officer perform a variety of public servant duties. They are “enforcers” of a city, town, or municipality’s laws, statues and ordinances. They detain and arrest violators of these laws. Police Officers issue summonses, regulate traffic,
Officers constantly work at crime scenes or follow up on accident reports and other traumatic events. Like hospital personal, police officers have to deal with the death and suffering of victims. Even though a career in law enforcement can have an impact on some of their personal lives, people are still eager to serve their community. Furthermore, there are jobs such as Secret Service and FBI agents that require extensive travel most of which is last minute. Other special agents include working for the U.S. Border Patrol which is mostly outdoors in rugged terrain. Most of these fields in law enforcement require that you work full time; working overtime is common. There are two major branches in law enforcement, state and federal. State officers include patrol officers, state police officers, transit and railroad police, sheriffs, detectives and criminal investigators, fish and game wardens. Uniformed police officers of the law have general enforcement duties. They are easily distinguished by the uniforms that they wear. These officers typically patrol areas in cites and respond to emergency calls. Police agencies are
