At some point in our lives, everybody eventually comes in contact with a law enforcement officer, some people for different reasons. Law enforcement officers work around the clock to keep citizens safe. Many people do not know a lot of things about law enforcement, some of those will be discussed. Those topics are agency administration, issues with law enforcement in today’s society, and law enforcement history. To start off, agency administration can vary from department to department. The agency’s administration will depend on what kind of department they are. A police department is a law enforcement agency that is governed by the city, whereas a sheriff’s department is governed by the county. A sheriff’s department is higher up than a police department. For example, a sheriff’s department can patrol in city limits, but a police department cannot patrol outside of city limits. That being said, in rural areas, the police department and sheriff’s department have mutual aid, which simply means that if the sheriff’s department needs assistance outside of city limits, the police department will assist them, and vice versa. The ranks in law enforcement are similar to a military ranking system. In a police department, you start as a police officer. This issue has greatly worsened within the last two years. It all started with the officer involved shooting in Ferguson. A tension arose after this shooting, many claiming that today’s law enforcement was racially discriminating. These same people just got madder about the whole situation. Many of these people turned to hate crimes, such as burning buildings down, rioting, looting, and some even killing law enforcement officers. In many’s opinion, it should be brought to a stop when officers are being killed just because they are a law enforcement
