On October 13th I was fortunate enough to be able to interview Sandi Lopez. Lopez is from Grand Island, Nebraska and has also lived in Kansas for a few years. At first she was not quite sure on what to do with her career pathway. She wanted a job where she could be able to help others and her community. Lopez says that having many of her friends being police officers is what got her more into law enforcement. She says hanging out around her friends telling her stories about being officers made her really want to be a part of the law enforcement department. However, she says it was a very hard decision to make knowing the fact that she would have to work long hours and being with her family was very important to her. She says becoming a sheriff deputy was not very easy for her. One of the reasons why was because she did not have a college degree. So she had to start from the bottom and work herself up where she wanted to be. However, she said a high school diploma is all that was needed. Lopez started of by becoming a correctional officer in Grand Island for six years. She says while being a correctional officer she was never assaulted in any way. As a correctional officer she had to deal with the inmates. Lopez had to to feed them and restrain them if they were causing a disturbance. She also had to book the inmates when they first entered the system which was a long process. After being a correctional officer she became a jail sergeant for three years in Kansas. Finally after three years, she accomplished her goal by becoming a sheriff deputy for two years in Kansas, as well. She says the reason why she wanted to become a sheriff was because she wanted to protect and serve her community. As a Sheriff she had answer multiple calls everyday and would attend the needs of the people in her community. One of the hardest task was having to get everything approved by the judge before she was able to do anything.
