This past semester I interned at the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Department. This was a unique experience for me and really changed my perspective on the possibility of having a law enforcement job as a police officer. Ultimately, I would like for my career path to result in me being a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Getting hired as a special agent with the FBI is very competitive, and as of right now it is extremely hard to get a job with them straight out of college. Luckily, for myself I have a good point of contact with the FBI, in which I was able to have a on the phone, and in person interview with my cousin John Dolan, who is the Acting Assistant Special Agent in Charge, of FBI 's Joint Terrorism Task Force in …show more content…
My internship at the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Department made me realize that I am searching for a career that has high intrinsic value. This is probably the reason why I am in the military and most likely the reason why I can now envision myself as a police officer, because I want to serve my community and give back. According to Boal (2004), “In Order for police officers to be effective they must have the support of the community. All Involved parties should understand their role and obligations in providing for the safety of the community”. From what I saw this department was doing a good job of community policing and it’s something I would be very passionate about if I was an officer. Not only did this internship open me to the possibility of becoming a police officer, it also helps shape my current career …show more content…
I took the New York State Trooper exam back in 2013 and scored a 97. At the time I had no desire to a police officer, but I figured I take it just in case, and thankfully I did. That same year I also enlisted in the United States Army, attended basic and advanced training, received a secret clearance, and got contracted to become an Army officer through Fordham University. These were all steps I was taking to enhance my chances of getting a federal job down the road. Bringing things back to present day, with my new found interest in policing, the New York State Police exam I took back in 2013 has become very relevant. What am I doing now, most importantly is staying in shape, and running every day. December 17, 2015 I got invited by the NYSP to attend an informational seminar, which means I will likely be in the next round of candidates, and if it all goes well, in the next academy this upcoming year. To try to increase my chances of being hired, I also plan to try to intern with the agency this upcoming spring my last semester of college. In my second interview with John Dolan, I informed him of my recent contact with the NYSP, and he said that would be a great way to get a foot in the door. I plan on submitting my resume with the FBI anyway, but if hired by the NYSP I would be able to get those three years of work experience. Police agencies also have programs where
Many people who attended college and have served in the military or police force tend to get promoted quicker. He also recommended that I do everything in my power to maintain a clean record and be honest on all applications. He has seen many recruits go into the academy and lie on documents. Those recruits were immediately released and were not allowed to apply again for another two years. He also wants to encourage all minorities to start applying and getting involved in police work. More departments are searching for eligible applicants such as African Americans every day. Clay is still finishing up some courses at his university but he believes that many people that finish college create better opportunities for themselves to grow in their
In all respect I've always had a fascination with becoming an F.B.I. agent. As my interest grow during my educational progression, I'm learning how my personal attributes with help me in my given field. First of is the size of my physical build, which I believe will help me with any possible altercation I my encounter. My positive attitude toward life will also be helpful. I also have a good decision making skills, with out letting let and kind of prejudice entering my mind. The reason I am so positive about this is I've had such a variety of friends. I've had friends of different races, ethnic background, and religious beliefs. I've also have a vary strong emotional barrier due to all the tragedy I've gone though in my life. I've lost three of my closet friends in the last four years. Through all those years I was the person who was strong to help my entire friends threw our losses. When I get into the field all the knowledge I've acquired in my education will in all intent be useless. How do I know this you ask? Several people I know in several justice fields have told me that the real education comes in the field. Their have several movies such as "The Siege", Silence of the Lambs" witch have inspired me to follow in this possible life style. The T.V. show cops is the most instamental to me, due to the way they always explain how to dissolve every encounter, and what would happen to the perpetrator. These movies and T.V. shows give a positive outlook on my possible life in handling these issues. I would not leave out the possibility of becoming a scout leader. The reason I think I could handle this job is because I've always had an attraction to teaching children. I have been babysitting children for seven years, for my next-door neighbors and my aunt. Any other person besides their parents or me could always never control the three boys next door. Then there are my two cousins who were both girls. I always loved watching children; I just get along with them so well. I believe I could make a difference in their lives.
I chose to do my ride along with the Lexington Police Department. The police officer that I got to ride along with was Officer Ernesti. Officer Ernesti has an associates degree in criminal justice. After high school he attended Southeast Community College in Lincoln. He says that he wished he chose a different field to study. The reason is was because he got in a fight with a suspect and injured his arm. He was afraid that he did something severe to his arm that he would not be able to perform any police duty. If he would have had a different degree he could have fallen back to something that does not relate to criminal justice. Before getting hired by the Lexington Police Department in January of 2014 he worked in Gosper County for two years. During his time at Gosper County he was a K-9 handler.
The FBI has many requirements for one to qualify as a candidate to become a Special Agent. Applicants must have graduated, with a four-year degree, from a university or college that is accredited by an association recognized by the US Secretary of Edu...
In order to become an FBI agent you have to work in law enforcement and work in homicide or be a person’s investigator. Who would hire me with these interests that I envelop? A local law enforcement, like the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office would hire me. If I decide to move I would work at law enforcement in Washington D.C. or in Virginia which is where the BAU’s company is. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s office is a growing company and their goal is to make our community safe. They are committed to providing a safer environment and enhancing the life for everyone in the county. They value respect, trust, and accou...

The article Police and Higher Education: Where are We Now by Roy Roberg and Scott Bonn discuss and review past articles and ideas about whether or not police officers should be required to have earned a college degree in order to qualify a position in law enforcement within the United States. The first person who believed in the idea that police officers should be required to hold a college degree in order to be qualified for a position was August Vollmer. August Vollmer was “the father of American police professionalism” (Walker & Katz, 2011). Vollmer is best known for being a supporter of higher education within law enforcement. However, many officers and high ranking officials did not believe in the concept of needing to obtain a college degree in order to protect their community. A majority of police officers in law enforcement did not have a college degree nor did police departments require it to be considered a position. Moreover, many police departments did not necessitate a high school diploma but rather a general equivalency diploma. The first time that this idea was utilized was during the time of the 1960’s, when, in the early 1960’s, crime was increasing drastically and by the late 1960’s the ghetto riots took place, opening the eyes of those in charge that something needed to change, and change quickly in order to prevent criminal activity and chaos.

The Unites States Marshals service has been a very beneficial internship. The Marshals were all very nice and informative. They had me taking care of the front desk. More days than not, there was filing of medical papers for the year 2015 and the year 2016. Some people have a large stack of papers because they are always needing medical attention while in custody. The next thing I do is answer the phone. This happens to be one of the more interesting tasks. You really never know who it is going to be or what they are going to say. If needed, I transfer the individuals to other people whom can help them. I also attend court hearings throughout the day. These hearings can be from many different
Serve and protect as a police officer in the city of Santa Ana has been my career dream goal since I was growing up being influenced by police officers throughout my education. Seeing so many casualties by violence in my community is one of the reasons why I am pursuing this profession, so that I can be able to accommodate the best way I can to reduce the violence. Other reasons why I am desiring to become police officer is to save someone 's life, help people make better choices, challenging tasks, and serve my community. Although dilemmas with people being unsupportive with law enforcement has increased, I will continue to pursue this career and make a tremendous impact in the community. This career will provide me with excellent benefits

On Tuesday, September 23rd, I had the opportunity to do a ride along with the Takoma Park police department. My ride along was quite interesting. I rode with Officer Carl, a twenty-six-year-old officer who has been with the police department for six months. During the ride along we engaged in so many conversations concerning his work routine, and some the important things to be aware of as a police officer. Officer Carl and I were about the same age group so I felt much comfortable talking to him. Before I went for the ride along I had a different perspective about police work, I thought police work was much amusing and entertaining, but after the ride along with Officer Carl, I have realized that there is much more to police work and it often
Throughout my one hundred and twenty-hour experience with the Gloversville Police Department, I learned many skills, values and the ways of this Police Department. Many of the calls and situations I went to often could relate to a certain theory that I learned in any of my law classes. I would recommend any student majoring in Criminal Justice to try to take an internship with a local law enforcement agency. I am currently signed up for the civil service test for Gloversville Police Department, If I do qualify for the Police I believe that this internship will give me a huge head start.
In the past eight years as a police officer for the City of South Salt Lake, I have found that personal growth and achievement in my career have been based on certain past experiences. Such experiences have molded what my personality is today.
