First of all we should take a look at each word individually, because then we get a nice and clear definition of social media and a better understanding of it.
Social: Social means the interaction between people by sharing and consuming information.
Media: Media can be translate as an instrument of communication, like the internet (but also TV, radio and newspaper are common instruments of communication).
Full definition: Therefore Social Media stands for communication tools that facilitate people to interact with each other by sharing and also consuming information.

A user account means that you can create your own accounts to log into the sites, if this is the case than it is a good sign there’s going to be social interaction.
Profile pages: How we learned in the beginning, social media is all about communication, so sharing and consuming information. A profile page makes it a lot easier, because it presents an individual. It often includes information about the individual user, like a profile photo, biography, website, recommendations, recent activity and more.
Friends, followers, groups, hashtags and so on: An individual use their accounts to stay in contact with other users to share information. Sometimes they can also use them to subscribe to certain forms of information.
News feeds: A user can update new information on most of the social media platforms and other users can see those information in the news feeds.
Personalization: Usually users have the flexibility to configure their user settings, customize their profiles to look specific, organize their friends and followers, manage the information they can see in their news feeds and they can even give a feedback on what they do and don’t want to …show more content…

So when you use this method you will get the results right away. However, when you choose this method you also choose the way against the backbone of the entire network, which was ‘liking’ something.
Attracting Likes
A really good idea for reaching the best results, is making a fan page on Facebook at first. Then people can like your company and what you do and they can also see your brand and get a first impression. In your fan page you put a link to your website and maybe online shop and then people will register on your website and maybe even make a purchase. If you do it like this you can combine brand making with sales.
However, most of the businesses who are on Facebook just want to get fans, because they are mostly shops in real life, like a restaurant or a hairdresser and they just want to raise the popularity of their brand.
In this case, it is maybe the best choice to just have the fan page because you want to stay in touch with your customer and want to run contest or arrange other activities your customers want
