Research conducted before two-thousand and ten constituted positive effects that social media had on interpersonal communication. The researchers came to the conclusion that social media, in its early days, strengthened social interaction between family, friends, co-workers and even online strangers. In a two-thousand and nine study on social media and its effects on how it may cultivate friendship in online schooling, Barbour concludes that ‘the use of the "Odyssey of the Mind" social network the students at this cyber school are able to receive a social experience that may not be the same as the one they would receive in a traditional school, but appears to be an equivalent experience" (59). He states that social media can help foster relationships between people if they don 't have that everyday social interaction. That is if people would use safe and friendly social networking practices. Research conducted after two-thousand and ten found that social media could actually be harming interpersonal relationships. Specifically, in regards to young adults and social media, studies show that nowadays, "young adults are experiencing a significantly high amount of cyberbullying victimization" (Peluchette 435). Facebook, Twitter and other social platforms have become one of the central activities in human affairs. Used by people around the world promoting communication, social media gives scope to everyone to exhibit their ideas and thoughts. The plethora of social platforms is a revolutionary invention that is changing the way of how people moderate and communicate with others in their daily lives. Social media provided people with a mean that they can use to strengthen their connection with people they care about. It also facilitated connections to people that were not possible before. People now can connect with societies from all over the world and are able to be impacted by those connections. This made it easier for people who share similar ideas and problems to communicate with each other. As Davidson explains in her essay “Indisputably, the imagination is engaged in making connections in all of those forms, as it is in anything we experience. It is engaged in a different way when we ourselves are making the connections when we’re browsing from one to another link that interests us and draws our attention” (55). Social media made it easier for people to satisfy their need for communication with others. As social beings, humans like to connect with each other; it is how they develop empathy towards others. As Fredrickson explains in her essay “As you interact with one person after another, they gently nudge you to attend to these others more closely and forge connections when possible. They shape your motives and behaviors in subtle ways, yet ultimately, their actions serve to strengthen your relationships and knit you closer to the social fabric of life” (110). Now social media websites or applications serve as pathways
“Social media, a web-based and mobile technology, has turned communication into a social dialogue, and dominates the younger generation and their culture. As of 2010, Generation Y now outnumbers Baby Boomers, and 96% of Gen Y has joined a social network” (Qualman 1). Social media now accounts for the number one use of the Internet, and this percentage is rising bigger every day (Qualman). As a consequence, people are becoming more reliant on social media, which has a led to a number of advantageous as well as unfavorable effects. The world is more connected today than it has ever been in the past, and this is all because of growth in technology. What has yet to be determined though

in Livsey 1). With their thoughts, common sense, and emotions still developing, adolescents become susceptible to both positive and negative influence, causing them to feel the most significant impact from the consumption of social media. This allows social media to greatly hinder young minds from proper development and diminishes people’s ability to verbally communicate face-to-face, preventing the construction of personal relationships. Social networking creates a feeling of community for teenagers as the term ‘“social networking” is [currently] used to describe the communities built via technologies” (Braun 71). However, few intentional relationships form as people do not connect with one another in a personal manner via online conversation. They rather observe what someone displays online for others to view, not necessarily one’s true self, but one’s best or most popular self. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. “I didn't know what Facebook was, and now that I do know what it is, I have to say, it sounds like a huge waste of time –Betty White (“Betty White Quotes,” 2014, para. 1).” This quote can be interpreted to fit with several of the social media avenues that many people spend their time on. Day in and day out people post, tweet, share, and pin countless times throughout the world. These different forms of communication were first created for an easier way for people to connect with others. Yet now, so much time is spent on these social sites that it has warped the interactive part and is causing more damage than good. Many are growing a desire and are living for the amount of “likes” they can receive on a post or how many re-tweets they can generate. Instead of going to these outlets to participate in a partial portion of their social lives, people are filling that time with the technological aspect of communication. As White said, this can become an inordinate amount of wasted time and can ultimately grow into further damaging circumstances. These different social media channels can cause emotional harm through disparaging the relationship between friends, conjuring of a narcissistic personality, and the retrogradation of ones self-esteem.

Social media’s lack of face-to-face contact is leading to the collapse of these social rules and consequently to the decline of social skills in America today.
