"At their highest level, all competitive disciplines become vehicles for the expression of one's human potential."(Thorin) I find that this quote says a lot about sports in general. So why should Esports be left out, and not be considered a sport. I personally think they should be considered a sport. Here is why I think Esports should be considered a sport; What is defines a sport, how much viewership a sport gets and a sport has to be compelling.
So what defines a sport. Firstly, some people say that a sport should be physically taxing. I believe that they do not have to be. Some sports are not physically demanding like bowling, golf and billiards are not very physically demanding sports, but these sports are still considered sports so why should Esports not be considered a sport. Secondly, a sport has to have many teams. Like soccer Esports has teams world wide who all compete for the same goal on being the best at what they do. Each team has their own set of fans and other teams whom they

another big part of a sport is how many people actually watch it. Viewership is something Esports is not lacking; millions of people watch Esports finals. Firstly, the viewership grows every year with this last years league of legends finals having over forty-three million people watching. This is not including every other Esport. There are many other Esports with its own viewerships. Secondly, These Esports viewers are not all watching online. Many tournaments are held in huge stadiums like the Staples Center in California; which they usually fill. With many other people watching online in many different countries. Finally, the viewership of a sport can tell how well a sport is doing. More viewers mean more money for the sport. This is something Esports is not lacking with tournaments having huge prize pools, and many businesses seeing the success with Esports. Esports is not lacking sponsors and have a long future ahead of
What exactly determines whether or not an activity is a sport? The term sport is defined by The Free Dictionary as: A physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively, an activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively, or an active pastime; recreation.
Sports really shape our society, and culture. You will not find very many people who do not have some love for at least one sport or another. There are so many sports out there that people love and will always watch the sport of their choice.
Scholars have identified six separate components that must be present within a sport in order to be considered as a true sport. One of the first requirements on this list is that the sport must include a certain level of competition. This is particularly important because competition is believed to be the main force that motivates and athlete to perform up to their optimum levels. The second aspect a sport must contain is maintaining certain level of strategy or chance. This essentially means that the sport must be played in order to determine the winner or outcome. Another important aspect that must exist within a sport is a governing body. A governing body is always present at a high level of competition in order to enforce the rules and regulations. Another important trait that a sport should possess is it must require some form of physical and mental activity. These components incorporate speed, coordination and timing into a sports performance. All of these movements also require skill which is also another necessity a sport must have. Lastly the final aspect a sport must have is it must benefit someone. This can either be personal, extrinsic means or even for entertainment.
Poker has developed a massive following in recent years, with the help of media outlets like ESPN and Fox the game of poker is world renown now. “This mainstream acceptance is due to increased media coverage of high-stakes poker tournaments such as the 2003 World Series of Poker and various weekly tournaments on the World Poker Tour.” (/iml.jou.ufl.edu...) The two outlets that represent this game people would say that the game of poker is a sport. We can all agree that it is a game but does that necessarily make it a sport? Of course the serious poker players will say that it is, but for the players of other games qualified as a sport say otherwise. So despite the recent growth in popularity of poker; the claim of it being a sport has brought criticism. What about poker makes this a valid discussion; the two networks that broadcast it or is there really qualities of sport behind this game.
What makes something a sport? What characteristics define a sport? Why do we feel that some sports are not considered sports when we have never played them? When you google the definition of a sport this is what you will find “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.” So as long as there is physical activity and competing then whatever you are playing is considered a sport. When you think of a “sport” that should not be considered one what is the first that comes to mind; why? Why is it when googling “Sports that aren 't considered sports” Cheerleading comes up so often?
A sport is something that requires someone to have a special set of skills to do what they are doing within the said sport and also a sport requires some form of physical excellence in said athlete NASCAR simply does not have this no matter what type of shape you are in you can drive a car. NASCAR drivers are not really special either due to the fact that nearly everybody in this world can drive a car. NASCAR is taking a basic everyday thing and putting a competitive feel to it which simply does not work if it did anything and everything could be a sport. If all a sport was something that had a competitive feel to it then breathing could be a sport or even sleeping could be if it just had to have a competitive side to
Bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering: all the rest are merely games.” I believe that there is a lot of truth to this statement, considering all three take serious courage, endurance, and strategy to accomplish. The definition of a sport is this; an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. So there is hardly any argument on whether
A young boy goes up to his mother and says, "Mommy! I want to be a baseball player!" If this was said in 1930, the boy's mother probably would have told the boy, "That's not future for you! You need to get a real job and make good money." If this was said in 1999, the boy's mother probably would have said, "Let's go to the store and buy you a baseball glove so you can start to practice." It is visible to every sports fan that in the past few decades, sports has undergone a whole new renovation. It isn't just an activity that is played for fun. It is a business in which owner and players attempt to coincide. It is a business where TV controls fan interest. It is also a business that affects many people's lives, both monetary and living aspects. There are many aspects that are involved with the economics of sport. Each one having unique qualities that adds to the greatest source of entertainment.
It must be a sport if it’s in the Olympics. I’m sure it’s in the Olympics because the kind of shows people do can become very competitive and eligible for the Olympics. I think it might be more competitive than other sports because you’re riding a 1200lb animal and it takes a lot of hard concentration and work to train the horse and get it ready for competition season. If it’s in the Olympics no one can really argue that it is not a sport, therefore I have made my point. If someone were to argue that it is not a sport because “the horse is doing all the work” , well I would tell them you get on it and see how “easy” it is. It’s not easy unless you ride often getting ready for show season, or even just for fun. The rider and the horse need to be in good shape. I would also then argue it’s like the most expensive sport out
Sports are an important part of our world. Take a look at any newspaper, listen to any radio, or watch TV for any length of time and there will surely be some sports information that is being passed along. The fact that sports figures get paid salaries that teachers can only dream about lets us know where our priorities lie in this society. Sports consume a lot of our time and energy, and because of this, they have great influence in our culture.

Is golf a sport Even though golf better matches the definition of a game than a sport, golf is a sport because requires coordinated muscle use, the olympic committee considers golf a sport and its gets in players exercise for the day. Whether you’re a righty or southpaw a golf swing uses at least seventeen muscle groups in the coordinated movement of the hands, arms, abs, and legs. While most sports do not require as much movement as the golf swing.
A recent article in Readers Digest estimates that most Americans spend at least 13% of their income on sporting events and sport related products. Sports has entertained American people and drained money out of their pockets making sporting events an arena of pure economic activity. It has been proven that Americans will purchase tickets to attend sporting events, but this alone does not create enough revenue to keep sports teams profitable.
There are a lot of massive spectacles like the Super Bowl, the World Series, the NBA play-offs, the Olympic Games, College Football Games. Each of these sports activities takes in many millions of dollars from television revenues and dominates national sports news for days or weeks.
Someone is sitting on a stage with people clapping and people cheering, but they didn’t sing or dance, they did magic while playing a video-game. This is competitive gaming. People can see and know that gaming is fun. They are playing a sport. Some disagree with this, but many other people believe it is. The players must go to the gym for fast reactions and stamina and must be very mentally focused, and just agree to stick with the trends as well. Video gaming should be a sport.
