Motocross: Sport or Not
Even though some would consider motocross racing a hobby or a game rather then a sport because of their opinions, a person should understand that motocross racing is a sport in today's world because it contains all the elements of the definition of what a sport is and Motocross is a sport due to the fact that it requires an individual to be in top shape, both mentally and physically as defined by the word sport.
What exactly determines whether or not an activity is a sport? The term sport is defined by The Free Dictionary as: A physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively, an activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively, or an active pastime; recreation.
In order for one to understand if Motocross is a sport or not it is important to first understand the meaning of what a sport is. The history of sports is varied in nature, but, no matter what book someone reads, the common denominator remains the same; competition. This type of competition involves both physical and mental endurance. Endurance includes training for a particular sport with the appropriate exercising of the
body and mind. Most exercise specialists believe a person cannot have one without the other. In order to have a physically fit mind one must have the body to go with it.
As history tells us, in the Roman days, the competitors had to be in superb shape in order to compete in the activities and sports of that time. What about Hercules and the characters of the Roman time period. Chariot races could be considered the beginning of auto racing or even motocross. The chariot rider ...

... and, thus, laid the foundation for the sports of modern day. The types of competition have changed throughout the centuries, but not the physical and mental
stamina needed to compete. The riders of today are considered the gladiators of Motocross. Motocross is definitely a sport and not just a pastime! To quote Napolean Tetreault, “Motocross is great sport. It's demanding and super physical. It works the whole body.”
In closing is a photo of my personal experience with the sport of Motocross. One should never doubt that motocross is a sport. The above references should help one to understand exactly what it takes to make a sport a sport and that motocross is a sport. Motocross not only is a sport for the participant but also a sport for the fans in the stands
Hard work, exercise and yes the rush of adrenaline from the cheers in the stands makes this a SPORT!
I believe all sports are good vehicles or tools to market and advertise, but, none is...
Golf is a very fun activity which is played by many all around the world. But a big concern about golf is, is golf really a sport? Many people say yes but also, many people say no. I am here to tell you why I think golf is a sport.
“An athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature.” According to dictionary.com that would be the definition of a sport. Let’s look at the definition of a sport from Cambridge Dictionary, “a game, competition, or similar activity, done for enjoyment or as a job, that takes physical effort and skill and is played or done by following particular rules.” Marching band has been around for many years and still to this day is underappreciated and there’s been a lot of controversy whether or not it should be considered a sport. If we were to follow the guidelines of these definitions, then why would it not be. Marching band is an exhausting sport and takes an immense amount of physical power and will to be done. Not only that, but it takes an almost impossible amount of skill. Finally, marching band is a majorly competitive activity. Most high schools have a competition about once a week for a season that lasts about fourteen weeks (or about three months). So why is it not considered a sport?
A lot of people these days say that horse riding is not a sport. I beg to differ, often, the only exposure they've had to equestrianism are professionals is on television, whose riding is so skilled they make it look effortless but for a typical rider its very hard. The reason why horse riding is a sport because you don’t just sit there, and you can compete in shows.
While the definition of a sport may vary by the person, the dictionary definition for a sport can be best described as, “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment” (Oxford Dictionary). Cheerleading has been a topic of an ongoing controversial debate as to whether or not it should be recognized as a sport. Players that engage in sports, such as, football, basketball, and baseball all display a genuine liking for their sport, which generally emphasizes why they take part in the activity. Similarly, cheerleaders have this same mindset, but society tends to overlook their passion through the generation of the argument that cheerleading does not require
In the 16 century a new sport was created with not a lot of popularity but later will become one of the most fast growing sports in the world.
...’s preference. There is too much that goes on between the rider and the bike, there has to be a relationship, a strong connection between them. It is almost like having a girlfriend you want to connect with her to accomplish you goals and to get there you will have to fix what is wrong. I know supercross is not in the Olympics because it involves a motor but not because of that can’t be consider as a sport. I believe that any activity that raise you cardiovascular activity and involves any type of competition should be considered as a sport.
Scholars have identified six separate components that must be present within a sport in order to be considered as a true sport. One of the first requirements on this list is that the sport must include a certain level of competition. This is particularly important because competition is believed to be the main force that motivates and athlete to perform up to their optimum levels. The second aspect a sport must contain is maintaining certain level of strategy or chance. This essentially means that the sport must be played in order to determine the winner or outcome. Another important aspect that must exist within a sport is a governing body. A governing body is always present at a high level of competition in order to enforce the rules and regulations. Another important trait that a sport should possess is it must require some form of physical and mental activity. These components incorporate speed, coordination and timing into a sports performance. All of these movements also require skill which is also another necessity a sport must have. Lastly the final aspect a sport must have is it must benefit someone. This can either be personal, extrinsic means or even for entertainment.
Because some cheerleading squads don’t compete, society thinks of it merely as a physical activity. Even though cheerleaders’ main purpose is to support other athletic activities, cheer squads whom compete, follow all physical criteria to be considered a sport. Cheerleaders put forth an incredible amount of determination. They practice tirelessly to show off their skills, with little or no recognition for their efforts. Cheerleading is a sport because it requires physical fitness, skill, dedication, and stamina. Cheerleading should be considered a sport globally.
Surfing is not a sport, and no true surfer would ever claim otherwise. Yes, it requires all the essential elements of a sport; strength, discipline, balance and most of all practice but unlike a sport, surfing isn’t a competition. True, even most surfers refer to it as an “extreme sport”, but the truth is, we do so because it’s impossible to create a word that completely describes surfing. It is an experience in its own class, a spiritual conquest quest, searching for the perfect wave.
...it sports require movement if even the slightest. It would not be the right thing to do to call this a sport it would disgrace the name of sports and it could be insulting to those who participate in real sports. Considering all the training and hard work put into their game then have a poker player who probably does nothing in preparation for their game but yet can have the title of athlete. Does not seem fair to all the athletes that risk injury in pursuit for glory in their sport. A card game is not a sport like Matt Pusateri says in his article “lets try to pretend it’s something it isn’t .” "The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play." –Olympic Charter
A sport is something that requires someone to have a special set of skills to do what they are doing within the said sport and also a sport requires some form of physical excellence in said athlete NASCAR simply does not have this no matter what type of shape you are in you can drive a car. NASCAR drivers are not really special either due to the fact that nearly everybody in this world can drive a car. NASCAR is taking a basic everyday thing and putting a competitive feel to it which simply does not work if it did anything and everything could be a sport. If all a sport was something that had a competitive feel to it then breathing could be a sport or even sleeping could be if it just had to have a competitive side to
A sport is usually defined as competitive. Horseback riding is very fun and just as competitive as any other sport. Also it is kind of special and different because it includes different types of events. Also it includes lots of clothing and equipment, which can be expensive but totally worth it. These events would include gymkhana, dressage, showmanship and jumping. It is not like
Someone is sitting on a stage with people clapping and people cheering, but they didn’t sing or dance, they did magic while playing a video-game. This is competitive gaming. People can see and know that gaming is fun. They are playing a sport. Some disagree with this, but many other people believe it is. The players must go to the gym for fast reactions and stamina and must be very mentally focused, and just agree to stick with the trends as well. Video gaming should be a sport.
Sport, according to the oxford dictionary, can be defined as an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. Sport may seem like just another, simple five letter word yet it has the power and aptitude to teach humanity such fundamental and intellectual life lessons. In my speech I will explore these vital lessons, such as failure, success, perseverance, teamwork, tolerance, responsibility and discipline by exhibiting how each lesson can be learnt and utilised.
