School sports have the same purpose as regular physical education classes; they both ensure to stay healthy and help students exercise. If thats the case, many student-athletes are wondering why they need a physical education class in high school. Student athletes should be exempt from physical education classes because less chance of injuries and instead have the choice to take other course electives.
Many student athletes including myself wonder why we have to take a P.E. class especially while in a sport. I believe the best choice for myself would to exempt P.E. from my school schedule and add another course elective or a study hall where I can get some of my homework done. This would help me because I barely have any time after my long practices to get my homework done and having a P.E. class can get me tired or injured very easily. Also, all of the strenuous work on athletes bodies during a sport make it hard for gym class participation. Athletes might not want to “try” as hard in P.E. because of the fact the athletes need to save their own energy for after school practices. Another problem athletes face is P.E. related injuries. The number of physical education-related injuries in the U.S. increased up to 150 percent between the years 1997 and 2007 (New). I believe this is occurring because athletes might not take P.E. seriously and are surrounded by other non-sport students causing a high-risk of injury. Gym teacher Matt Gilkerson from a high school in Hilliard, stated “Most athletes are capable and knowledgeable about the correct ways to work out, get in shape and train, since they go over it during every practice.” Myself and students from Hilliard also agreed with Matt and said how physical education classes are ...

Extra homework time, less chance of injuries and a benefit to gym teachers and non-student athletes is a win situation for all. Furthermore, student athletes should be exempt from P.E. classes because less chance of injuries and instead have the choice to take other course electives.

The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner, Johnny Manziel, began the 2013 season sitting on the sidelines. Due to a half game suspension handed down by Texas A&M University, Manziel was only allowed to watch as A&M took the field versus the visiting Rice Owls. To “Aggies” fans, this half game suspension came as a huge relief. It had been feared that Manziel may receive a multiple game or year-long ban from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for violating NCAA Bylaw 12.5.2.1. The bylaw prohibits athletes from allowing their name or picture to be used in a commercial matter (Berkes, 2013). Luckily for him, a half-game suspension would be his only punishment. Manziel was put into this predicament after reports surfaced that he had accepted money in return for autographs. No proof of this was ever found, but it was proved that someone, probably a memorabilia collector, profited from his signature (Berkes, 2013). So wait, a man can’t receive money for signing his own autograph? The answer is “no”, if he is a student athlete following the strict rules of the NCAA. The only benefits he can accept are those included in a lucrative scholarship given by universities. As more incidents like Johnny Manziel’s have occurred, it has been debated by sports analysts and the news media whether or not these scholarships are a fair payment. Another Heisman Trophy winner, Cam Newton, was accused of trying to sell his services to Mississippi State University after his decision to transfer from a community college following his junior year. Sports are a crucial part of an individual 's character. Counter arguments made against having sports at schools are getting more and more public. The arguments make people, think again about having students play sports. Sports are useful because they give players skills they can use on and off the field: strength, leadership, and confidence.
The reason I say yes is because, the athletes have to be on the honor roll to play sports. The athletes have to be passing their classes to play sports.

If they’re good students, should they be allowed to miss class every now and then to train? In my opinion, the answer to that question is yes.
Every athlete dreams of playing professional at some point during their young adolescent career, but in reality a person has a greater chance of dying in a plane crash than becoming a professional athlete. Most people don’t have the skills to make it in the pros but for the few who do there is a controversial decision that needs to be made whether to go to college or go straight to the pros. Although some sports such as football and basketball require a waiting period after graduation from high school but base does not have such requirements. More athletes are trying to cheat the system so they don’t have to go to college. A new system could be beneficial because it would give financially troubled kids an opportunity to get paid in the pros and underdeveloped athletes a chance to develop in college.
School is meant to be a safe and secure learning center for students physically and emotionally; however, mandatory P.E. might take away some of that safety. By making P.E. mandatory, students will be forced to put their lives in possible danger daily. It is often thought that P.E. is a positive way to promote healthy lifestyles; however, that is not the case in today’s average P.E. class. Some schools force students to participate in organized school sports. However, I believe that schools should not make this a requirement. Some students may have medical conditions, family situations that don't allow them to participate in organized school sports, or they simply may not have the time.
School funding cannot be solely to blame for the decrease in physical activity in the education environment. With the increased emphasis on the need to achieve academic aptitude, children as well as their adult parents see athletics as an extra, or something that can be done when and if homework is completed. Not to say that this is not commendable, but evidence supports the fact that athletic programs have the ability to turn at-risk youth in positive directions. Sports programs promote healthy social and physical development while offering positive alternatives to high risk behavior.

Physical sports, like basketball and football, are not for the weak. They are full of impact that can result to injuries and could have been seriously hurt at any point during games and even practices. If this were to happen their shot at major leagues will be compromised, os they will be encouraged to be physically fit the most to be able to secure their future. The value of physical education P.E. teachers bring to schools and their students. P.E. has an effect on everyday life. With this in mind I feel P.E. is highly valuable. Physical education activities have development in mind. Children can participate in a variety of activities and are encouraged to achieve overall wellness by continuously staying active.

Many times people like to advocate winning and losing as the only factors to sports. Playing sports is an advantage for any student because there are things you learn that the classroom doesn’t offer. With the help of coaches and individual experience, students learn many lessons that help them build character and even do well in the classroom. Sports also give students another chance to excel and stay in school if they struggle with their education. The time that students occupy at practice is time away from trouble. When it comes to sports, winning is great, but learning and developing as a person is even better.
