Upon reading the materials for this assignment, I have targeted my frequently used study habits that would make it difficult to succeed in this course. Also, I have learned how to improve these skills and achieve the goals I have set for myself throughout this semester. A dreadful study habit of mine is cramming loads of information in the night before a test. Although I “study” throughout the week, I commonly find myself staying up until one and two o’clock in the morning the night before trying to memorize each word of every chapter my teacher has covered in the last four weeks. If not, we are most likely to forget. Another failed study habit I have is forcing myself to study for hours nonstop. Often, I have studied a single subject for three hours in one sitting. This normally results in lack of effort due to how exhausted I am. In this Study Skills Module, I learned that the most effective way to tackle study time is to study in short, choppy intervals. For example, studying for 30 minutes then taking a small break was proven to be more beneficial and allow the brain to store more material. In using this technique, it is also best to start with the task you find most desirable. In doing this, your body releases quantities of dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that controls the brain’s reward/pleasure centers. In essence, when you are working on a task that you enjoy, your body releases dopamine and acts as “feel-good” mechanism. Lastly, my absolute worst study skill is note-taking. Many times I take notes word for word and end up missing important information. I learned that this is called, “passive, rote copying”. Time management will benefit me in this course because it creates opportunities to successfully, as well as thoroughly, complete assignments to the best of my ability. By creating specific schedules and calendars, it makes deadlines and due dates less stressful and easier to abide by. One of the most helpful time management tactics I have learned about is creating a day planner. The concept of small due dates throughout the day serve as motivation for me to finish assignments on time. In terms of success, time management will eradicate the possibility of procrastination. Another helpful study skill I plan to use is organization. Not only does preparing materials beforehand and keeping a clean work area benefit you in terms of organization, it also reduces stress. Although many do not realize it, organization and stress correlate in innumerable ways. Planning ahead and disregarding distractions are also useful tactics that ensure you are as organized as possible. Finally, the most valuable skill I have learned is optimism.
