A group that was a significant part of my high school identity was Student 2 Student, the drug and alcohol-free club at Glenbrook South. The club’s goal was to create a safe and comfortable environment in which students can abstain from the use of drugs and alcohol while connecting with other people who share the same beliefs as them. Through Student 2 Student, I was able to meet others from GBS that I would have never met, and I was fortunate enough to become acquainted with some of the most supportive people in my life. A social club, Student 2 Student survived because of the familial atmosphere that was created within it. There was a bond shared between the leaders and members, allowing everyone to have fun while making healthy decisions
I went to my primary care practicum site only once this week because I will be attending VCNP conference this week. Healthworks of Northern Virginia provides comprehensive care to the insured and uninsured patients. There is no requirement of residency and patient pay on sliding fee scale for services regardless of their legal status. This week there was 8 to 9 no shows. This is the maximum number of no shows that I have noticed in last two and half month. When my preceptor inquired about the situation with the manager, we found out that many patients are scared to come due to the fear of new immigration policy. Thus, I was only able to see 6 patients on Monday. I have completed 201 hours for my practicum III. I plan to finish all my practicum
Looking back over the course of the semester, I feel that I learned many new and interesting uses for technology within the classroom – both for classrooms that have a lot of technology and for classrooms that are limited with technology. For the majority of the class, we utilized William Kists’ book The Socially Networked Classroom: Teaching in the New Media Age (2010), which provided multiple modes of instruction that both utilized and/or created technology. One of the first things that I remember, and consequently that stuck with me through the course’s entirety, is that individuals must treat everything as a text. Even a garden is a text. The statement made me change the way that I traditionally viewed Language Arts both as a student and as a teacher, as I very narrowly saw literature and works of the like as texts only; however, by considering nearly anything as a text, one can analyze, study, and even expand his/her knowledge. Kist (2010) states that society is “experiencing a vast transformation of the way we “read” and “write,” and a broadening of the way we conceptualize “literacy” (p. 2). In order to begin to experience and learn with the modern classroom and technologically advanced students, individuals must begin to see new things as literature and analyze those things in a similar manner.
Upon reflection of the UNIV 100 course, I realize there are three primary areas that I learned that will assist me in attaining my degree. They are: time management; software and online tools; and critical thinking. First, time management must play a part to be successful. Therefore, I struck a balance and set priorities in my life that included church, family, work, exercise, and rest (The Holy Bible: New International Version, Mat 6.33; 1 Tim 5.8; Heb 4.10). Through the completion of my graduate program in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, I have gained an immense amount of knowledge and a plethora of skills which I have used and found valuable in my seventh grade English classroom. My outlook on student learning and my empathy towards students has also been positively affected by the program. These learning opportunities have led me to become a better educator both inside and outside of the classroom.
In this course I experienced an important change in my beliefs about teaching; I came to understand that there are many different theories and methods that can be tailored to suit the teacher and the needs of the student. The readings, especially those from Lyons, G., Ford, M., & Arthur-Kelly, M. (2011), Groundwater-Smith, S., Ewing, R., & Le Cornu, R. (2007), and Whitton, D., Barker, K., Nosworthy, M., Sinclair, C., Nanlohy, P. (2010), have helped me to understand this in particular. In composing my essay about teaching methods and other themes, my learning was solidified, my knowledge deepened by my research and my writing skills honed.
For my assignment I have decided to choose a group which I have just finished taking for level 1 Hairdressing and they have progressed on to level 2 Hairdressing. This is within my current role as a hairdressing lecturer at Hugh Baird College which I have done since October. Within this group there are a couple of people who have support workers. There is one student within the group who has severe learning difficulties and is a more mature student. She also has many health problems which results in her having to carry an oxygen tank around for when she has any problems with her breathing due to her having problems with her heart. There is also another student in the class who has learning difficulties, she is very clever but just needs someone there for when she needs something explaining. She also has a support worker that comes in to give her support. This student has also been going through personal problems at home and has attendance issues. There is another student within this group who has severe dyslexia. She doesn’t have a support worker but the support people who are in there do give her help as she can have a tendency to give up, not to listen and just needs to be kept on track so by sitting next to a person that does have a support worker she gets the help from them. These three students have all had their level 1 qualification extended for a year were the rest of the group have progressed on to level 2 Hairdressing. Two of these students may progress on to level 2 but one doesn’t have the ability to be able to do this as the requirements are too high for her. A reflection of the work done to date in this course has given me much clarity on the goals that I wish to achieve in my life and the directions that I need to take to achieve them. Everyone has a different view on how they learn and learning itself. First starting in EXP 105, my understanding of learning was new knowledge and becoming wiser. Taking EXP 105 has truly increased my knowledge of what learning is and the process of it. The most important thing I have learned about learning is that you observe the world around you, make sure it is understandable, and figure out the right way to respond. Learning also provides critical thinking skills. Everyone have different ways of learning and those ways are based on four different learning patterns. The four different types of learning patterns are Sequence, Precision, Technical Reasoning, and Confluence. As I reflect on my past assessment process, I realized how much my assessments have changed over the years. In my early years, I used tests for informational recall as my assessments. I felt these were appropriate guidelines in which I needed to follow in order to substantiate a student’s grade. Every assignment or tests was given a point value and then based on the amount of points, a grade was given. Every student’s assessment was exactly the same, and the assessments did not contain any subjectivity. I felt confident in giving the grade based on a valid point system. However reflecting back, I see that I did not include any performance-based assessments or individual learning styles in my early assessment. I also did not take into consideration the individual needs of my students. My assessment approach was awful. I am embarrassed that I use to assess students in this manner.
This was the first lesson I have taught at CMS and I think it went reasonably well for a first attempt and considering my nervousness. There are, of course, things I would do differently or things that I would have implemented if I had the luxury of a follow up lesson the next day. I felt relieved to have taught this first lesson and now know what to expect for my second lesson with regard to how willing the students are to respond and participate in the lesson and how to pace myself.
