I will achieve this by working out to relieve extra stress at least three times a week over the next three months. I feel that when trying to improve upon something, you have to be realistic and understand that a goal is achievable as well. For example, a football player who has only been running a 4.5 40 yard dash for the past four years knows that overnight they will not be able to increase their 40 yard dash time, it is going to take weeks and possibly months to cut their 40 yard dash time. Being a professional works the same, I have to be realistic in understanding that goals I recommended earlier in the paper will not be achievable overnight. I will slowly have to improve my ability to self-regulate my actions, have more empathy for co-workers and improve on my emotional intelligence in general. Being realistic while understanding achievable goals will help me accomplish goals that I set for
There are good and bad leaders in every organization. This can be due to a lack of experiences, personality, or multiple other factors. If the reason a leader is not considered a good leader due to a lack of experience they can easily understand the techniques being used by the leaders around them. To know what is working for them, and what is not can be a huge advantage as a new leader begins their career. If their personality is the reason for their bad leadership, this can also be changed. It takes a lot of time and effort by the bad leader to change their personality to work with those around them. However, there are some personality traits that cannot be changed, due to their past of how the leader was raised. This paper will look at two leaders in the healthcare field, one considered a bad leader and the other considered a good leader. They are a two different stages in their careers which helps contribute to the bad and good leader titles. Their names have been changed for anonymity.
The role of leadership has become increasing valuable for organizations to be successful. According to Huber (2014), Leadership can best be defined as method utilized to ensure that an objective is completed. There are many different types of leaderships that can be found within each organization. In this paper I will highlight an example of a specific leadership style that we come across in healthcare settings. I will review my leadership self-assessment results and discuss the impact of leadership on staff and groups.
The assignment for week four is to assess and review results from the Authentic Leadership Self Assessment Questionnaire. The ALQ was created to provide a means to assess the parameters of authentic leadership and to allow for opinion on the behaviors that encompass Authentic Leadership Style (Northouse, 2013). Basically, the questionnaire and the model allows and individual to understand how followers or people perceive leadership authenticity.
As an officer in the United States Army, it has been imperative for me to understand every facet of leadership and why it remains important to be an effective leader. During this course, I have learned some valuable lessons about myself as a leader and how I can improve on my leadership ability in the future. The journal entries along with the understanding of available leadership theories have been an integral part of my learning during this course. For all of the journals and assessments that I completed, I feel it has given me a good understanding of my current leadership status and my future potential as a leader. All of the specific assessments looked at several areas in regards to leadership; these assessments covered several separate focus areas and identified my overall strengths and weaknesses as a leader. Over the course of this paper I will briefly discuss each one of these assessments and journal entries as they pertained to me and my leadership.
Many Scholars characterize the core qualities and skills necessary for an effective leader. Useem defines leadership as “Creating a vision and translating that vision into actions”. Historically, an effective leader was assumed to be exceptionally knowledgeable, authoritative, and dominate. Those leaders applied the command and control method to lead an organization. With the passage of time, this definition has been changed. The modern definition of an effective leader is honest, courageous, trustworthy, inspirational, and result-oriented. Today’s leaders create shared values and vision, and empower others to achieve their targets.
What makes a leader extraordinary consists of these three main ideas? In this essay, you will find out the answer to this question. Leadership skill development is crucial to the success of anyone who desires to hold a leadership position. Although some individuals seem to exhibit leadership skills naturally, most of us will have to work at developing and refining our leadership skills through classes, experience, and introspection. This paper will examine my responses to the Seven Habits Profile (Covey, n.d.) as they relate to my leadership strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for improvement. Finally, I will develop SMART goals reflecting the results of the profile results. These goals are intended to enhance my leadership skills within the context of transitional leadership theory.
There is a great amount of pride and accomplishment to know that you are a leader at your work environment. For some being a leader is easy and for some it takes time to learn and grow as a person to be a successful leader. It may even be hard for people to really distinguish themselves as a leader and not manager. They are two different traits in a work environment. I recently completed two leadership assessment quizzes. From both the quizzes I had somewhat different results. There was not a huge significant difference between each other but there were some. From the results I still have a bit to work on to become a great leader but I believe I am on the right path. The two tests I took were the Leadership Legacy Assessment and the Blake and Mouton Leadership Assessment. Both
The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People (Covey, 2004) has become the cornerstone of leadership and management wisdom. The habits emphasize personal responsibility and personal leadership. There is challenge in living everyday under the guidance of the habits but there is also great benefit as living the habits can influence everything we do in life. I was introduced to Covey’s seven habits through a one day seminar at my workplace several years ago. I learned some of the terminology and a few of the concepts but never really understood the power of the practical application of the habits. Reading the Covey materials has taught me that life is not about all the tasks that I accomplish but instead about accomplishing the tasks that support what is important to me. Covey has taught me that there are elemental components that are applicable across the many roles that I have in my life. Those universal elements are integrity, vision, discipline, and passion. Embracing these ideas has opened my eyes to the endless applications and benefits of living the seven habits.
Over the course of my professional career in different organizations in the past three years, I have worked under many managers. This has been a learning curve for me to understand the different managing styles and leadership characteristics of people. One of the managers whom I worked under, was the lead in a government project which also happened to be my last project before I took a break for continuing my studies, is a person I admire till date. I learned several life lessons in addition to the technical subject associated with the industry. This paper demonstrates the leadership styles exhibited by my manager with suitable examples.
First of all, I will find three mentors to guide me and gain valuable insights about skills, methods and experience of self-control (Parent, 2015.para10). These three mentors include teacher from RRU, a professional person with rich working experience and a friend so I can discuss theoretical knowledge with the teacher, learning practical experience from the professionals, and exchange learning experiences with my friend. I will observe how these people normally handles emotions and stress, and record key findings as reference. The second and the longest step is self-improvement which requires repetitive exercises, assessment, corrections and feedback. I will make two emotion control boxes which is the deposit box and withdraw box. Every time I feel stressed and out-of-control, I put a dollar with a sticky note writing time, person and reasons for incidents in the deposit box. If I analyze my activities afterwards and take immediate remedy measures to eliminate the negative moods or behaviors and received positive feedback from friends or person involved in that incidents, I can take out the dollar and put it in the withdraw box. If I successfully handled stress and challenges, I will put a dollar with a sticky note writing skills, insights and methods in the withdraw box. At the end of every month, I will compare the dollars in these two boxes to summarize what have learned and happened this month relating to
According to Bryant (2016), “self-leadership is the process by which you influence yourself to achieve your objectives.” So how do you achieve this, you start with developing your leadership point of view. Developing my leadership point of view forced me to reflect on the leader models in my life. It also forced me to evaluate the key events and experiences from my past and determine how they have impacted me as a leader. This self-reflection process allowed me to discover who I am, what my values and beliefs are and what my true purpose is in life. Thus far, this process has made me more self-aware and self-awareness is key to self-motivation and motivating others.
This paper describes about my leadership strengths and areas for growth/future study. It also included how these qualities are used in my daily work routine, self-assessment results and a brief explanation on Individual style in leadership.
When we work together in a team, or in a broader sense as a society, the leader takes on the most important role. It is the leader that helps prioritize activities and direct people’s thought process in the right direction. They are the ones who have the ability to bring the group together as a whole. Because of this, not anyone can be a leader. Only people with certain qualities and abilities are able to fill this role. So what makes a good leader? There is a defined path and specific characteristics that makes someone a good leader.
