Firefighting is a very dangerous career. The risk of injury or death is always there. On scene there are very dangerous chemicals being produced in the atmosphere such as carbon dioxide, hydrochloride, and phosgene. One of the biggest risks of no-scene death or injury is due to improper use of personal protective equipment (P.P.E.).
Safety is anything in the fire service. “Disaster can occur anywhere, and they often occur when we least expect them” (“Codes and Standards”). There are ten pieces of (P.P.E.) that are life saving devices. These ten pieces are a helmet, gloves, protective hood, protective coat, bunker pants, safety shoes, hearing protective, eye protective, SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus), and PASS (Personal alert safety system) device. “Most fire department do not realize that OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) has quite a few requirements for (P.P.E.), for example, CFR 1910.132” (“Failure to meet OSHA and NFPA”). Each one of these pieces is critical for the safety of firefighters. When firefighters are not wearing all of their (P.P.E.) they are putting their lives and the lives of others in danger.
In the fire service personal safety comes first, but some firefighters still do not wear the equipment that are design to save their lives so that they can save others lives. “North Carolina has one of the highest fatality rates in the United State” (“CDC- Directory of NIOSH”). Death rate have gone up in the pass decades. “In 2010 the number of deaths in the U.S. was 87” (“U.S. Fire Administration”). Now most firefighter fatality is heart attacks are due to stress, but still that’s a lot of death due to improper use of (P.P.E.). Safety is everything to a firefighters, it is their number one job.

The cylinder pressure before use is a limitation of the air supply. Training and experience of the user can make a very big different. This personal protective equipment is life saving.
Without this equipment a fire fighter could not done he/her job. Personal protective equipment saves lives, without dough. If a fire fighter is careless enough to forget to wear something design to save their life, then that fire fighter does not need to be a part of a service like that. When a fire fighter does not put their (P.P.E.), not only are they putting their own live on the line they are also putting the lives of their crew on the line. This equipment is design for the safety of a fire fighter there is no excuses not to wear it.
Since the early 1980’s Grimwood (2000) has studied and implemented the use of water fog spray directly into the fire gas layers from a fog nozzle, also termed (3-D) water fog, developed by the Swedish Fire service. Grimwood reviews studies and tests conducted by the U.S. Navy. Compared to a straight stream attack using a smooth bore nozzle three significant observations were recorded, the time spent fighting fire was reduced, the working heart rates of the firefighters were reduced, and peak body temperatures of the firefighters were lowered, while implementing the (3-D) water fog technique from a fog nozzle. Firefighters are more than friends. You can't fight fires with friends. To fight fires you need a brotherhood. The men and women of the fire service across the globe consider each other family, this is one of the grand traditions of the fire department. Firefighters are constantly looking out for one another, thinking about the things they do and how it may affect the other’s lives and safety. Life safety is of the highest priority in the business of fire rescue. To achieve a safety standard there are many tasks that fire personnel are expected to carry out, for both a personal and a team related purpose. One of these tasks is the daily inspection of the fire apparatus upon arrival to the fire station. This task is with most certainty the most essential process that fire personnel are responsible for in order to get through the shift safely and efficiently.

When it comes to safety most people think they are safe, and they have a true understanding on how to work safe. Human nature prevents us from harming ourselves. Our instincts help protect us from harm. Yet everyday there are injuries and deaths across the world due to being unsafe. What causes people to work unsafe is one of the main challenges that face all Safety Managers across the world.
After visiting some actual fire departments, I realized as a firefighter you certainly have a lot to be proud of. It’s not your average job and does require quite a bit of organization to stay on top of everything. Everyday you have to be ready and prepared for just about anything that can happen. You never know what kinds of jobs you are going to be set out to do in one day. This means your equipment should be in order, checked and ready to go.
