SGT Susette Caban Let me start be defining the ARMY as a profession; therefore, I need to define profession. According to “Merriam-Webster Dictionary” it defines profession as; “a calling requiring specialized knowledge and often long and intensive academic preparation”. All Army jobs have a long-term career education and professional development courses to enhance Soldiers performance and knowledge. This combined with experience creates experts in their specialty or duty. With training and experience the Soldiers knowledge increases. With increased knowledge comes increase of responsibility. When we blend training with experience we develop professionals. We trust in the Army because the values that have been deposit in them throughout their training based on the Army culture and ethics. Without this trust in our values and ethics, the term profession could not apply to the Army, to include the inspirational factors that makes a Soldier do what a Soldier do. Laying his or her life on the line for the protection of others.

The Army has established leader development training into all the different branches of service. This development training provides Soldiers with the tools that they need to be an effective and a professional leader that accomplishes the missions and takes care of Soldiers. There is also a process of selection which is called promotion board, which consists of a panel of high rank leaders that looks into the potential leader and reviews their training, experience and knowledge to determine and select the best
The United States Army, in its current state, is a profession of arms. In order to be considered a profession, the organization must have an ethical code rooted in values, strong trust with its clients, and be comprised of experts within the trade. These experts are constantly developing the trade for the present and the future and hold the same shared view of their trade culture.
This paper will not bore with the definition of a profession. The United States Army is about more than words, it is about action. The action of over 238 years of tradition and service. The Army is a profession. A profession requires its members to adhere to prolonged training and learn specialized skills. A member of a profession must wholly commit himself and his skills to a calling which is entrusted by the public. A profession provides its members with intrinsic value which motivates beyond financial gain. The Army is a higher calling which demands all of these qualities and more.
After more than ten years of persistent counterinsurgency (COIN) conflict and multiple simultaneous responses to several natural disasters, the United States Army is at a crossroads regarding professional education for its officers and enlisted force. Considering overseas contingency operations in Iraq are due to conclude in December 2011 and by 2014 for Afghanistan, it is plausible that strategic planners are considering the future make-up of what will constitute the Total Army Force to include new educational criteria for what could be a smaller force than was needed for present day operations. While this may be “peace dividend” speculation, there is precedence for the Army to reevaluate its force structure and personal qualification requirements after every major conflict over the last century. . Even though defense budget reductions should redoubt army equipment priorities, training deferrals because of persistent contingency operations have inhibited enlisted professional development despite that counterinsurgency operations require refocused soldiers training to improve their sense of situational understanding and application of observable operational ethics through conceptual enlisted leadership evaluation efforts.

The Army profession is imposed, by Chief of Staff of the Army, to all Soldiers and Department of Defense civilians, Army professionals, to carry on their responsibility in maintaining the Army as a military profession. Army professionals are the Soldiers and civilians who maintain the Army Profession; who meets the Army’s qualifications of competence, character, and commitment. Army professionals gives the Army the image that the world sees and knows, so it’s very important for the Army professionals to upkeep the image, no matter what time of day it may be or where they are in the world. When then leader measures what was supposed to happen with what actually happened, the leader and involved personnel will then find out if the job was completed to standard. Also the leader needs to know from the personnel involved, what to keep doing and what can be done different to get those same or better results. All feedback should be honest and factual. Webster’s dictionary defines the word profession as a type of job that requires special education, training, or skill. Many Soldiers would not consider the Army as a profession but a way of life. Some think the word profession belongs to everyday jobs like a plumber, mechanic, or doctor. Dr. Don M. Snider stated “the Army is a profession because of the expert work it produces, because the people in the Army develop themselves to be professionals, and because the Army certifies them as such” (Snider, D.
