A community lead by a strong leader thrives. As a future Army Officer, I look forward to the challenge of leading in the community of Aggieland. I understand the magnitude of greatness Texas A&M University presents to the world, and relish the idea of being a part of it. After goal orienting, I understand that my values comply best with Texas A&M University. Various events, such as Army Reserve Officer Training Corps, student organizations, and my job as a Supplemental Instructor, shape who I am. These events taught me that, leadership, integrity, community, and discipline are essential to life. Due to the strong urge to serve my country in the future, I took action and joined Army Reserve Officer Training Corps, also known as Army ROTC. This decision has had a significant impact on my life; learning discipline, leadership, loyalty, and many other great characteristics of a future Army Officer. From physical training in the morning to the classroom in the afternoon, Army ROTC has provided a path of excellence for me; teaching me to always strive for the best and nothing less. These organizations have provided me with encountering many people and I now recognize that differences within a community are beneficial to it. The purpose of this memorandum is to outline my view point on leadership. As a Drill Sergeant, it is my responsibility to transform civilians into well discipline, physically fit, and competent scouts. I am entrusted to uphold the Army standards, live the Army Values and Warrior Ethos, and instill Esprit de corps.
The NJROTC, or Naval Junior Recruit Officer Training Corpse, is built not only to teach high school students about the navy but also allows student to become our great leaders of the future. In NJROTC cadets are asked to live up to very high standards because those students in NJROTC are thought of as the best of the best and are at that school to represent the military way of life. In this program I have learned three traits that will help me better myself not only in the future but in the day I live today. These traits that I speak of are discipline, punctuality, and respect. If not for NJROTC I would have not been as great a person and would have little or no direction in my life.
As a cadet in the NJROTC program, the Navy's Core Value has changed my understandings of the role as a citizen of the United States. And because of honor, courage, and commitment it has somewhat helped me with what I've been through. Since I have took the time and actually understand what honor, courage, commitment means to me, it has assisted my everyday life and giving myself rules. And it has showed others the Navy core values, and doing so without telling but because of my actions. Getting the privilege to know honor, courage, commitment is like taking a big step in life.
The person that is next in command after the Battalion Commander is the Executive Officer (XO). The executive officer’s purpose is to help the Battalion Commander to run the whole program. The XO will also help the Battalion Commander send orders to the rest of the staff and cadets. The XO must be hardworking, well-rounded, firm, and responsible. I think that the position of XO would be a good fit for me because I possess these characteristics. I hope that I will be able to implement new ideas such as new clubs and programs to give cadets more opportunities to be involved in JROTC. I would also like to have guest speakers and recruiters come in and speak to the cadets about the different career paths that they can take. I think that obtaining
For years I have aspired to become a part of an elite organization such as the military, and more importantly, the United States Navy. Its reputation for instilling high moral character was encouragement for me to develop into a more mature, responsible, and independent young citizen. There are certain qualities that an officer must possess such as: honor, courage, commitment, and attention to duty, responsiveness to orders, cooperation, loyalty, leadership, integrity, and discipline. Despite not being a part of over 20 different organizations, as some claim to be, being a part of a smaller number of groups has allowed me to focus on developing my leadership skills more thoroughly than I could otherwise. Not spreading myself too thin has made me much more committed and involved in the organizations that I am a part of, making my influences so much stronger. I believe that as a leader we should all have a leadership philosophy that we live by and teach our subordinates to live by as well. However, even at this stage in my life I still have yet to figure out what my leadership philosophy really is. Crazy right that at the rank of SFC with 18 years in the United States Military, I do not have this one simple thing figured out. As I write out my thoughts pen to pad hopefully I can come up with something that makes sense is enlightening and that I can pass on to my soldiers as a guide. So that as they enter into the Senior Enlisted ranks they are better equipped then I to lead there soldiers.
While in the U.S Army I have encountered many leaders. When I reminisce on the past and try to remember all of the different leaders I have encountered, I realize they have all influenced my life in different ways. Although some of the leaders I have had made bad impressions, most have influenced my life positively. Throughout the years I have been in the U.S Army, one particular leader has helped me develop into the Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) I am today. I am Staff Sergeant Eric Duty and I would not be the professional I am today without SGT Buchan’s leadership.
Respect to me is admiring someone for their abilities, qualities, or achievements. I think respect is always earned an can never be given. As soldiers soldiers we should always respect our peers because they have made the same sacrifice as us. But as soldiers we should have a higher level of respect for our NCOs because they have done their time an have earned it. Being respectful is not hard it is simple, just treat others the way we would like to be treated ourselves.
As our forefathers before us stated, ‘‘No one is more professional than I. I am a Noncommissioned Officer, a leader of soldiers. As a Noncommissioned Officer, I realize that I am a member of a time honored corps, which is known as “The Backbone of the Army (“The NCO Creed writing by SFC Earle Brigham and Jimmie Jakes Sr”). These words to Noncommissioned Officer should inspire us to the fullest with pride, honor, and integrity. The NCO creed should mean much more than just words whenever we attend a NCO’s school. For most of us this is what our creed has become because we learn to narrate or recite. The military from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard has an overabundance of NCOs who fall under their pay grade of E-5, E-6 and etc. Yet somehow there still not enough leaders. I believe that the largest problem afflicting the military today is our lack of competent leaders, ineffective leader development, and how we influence our subordinates under us who are becoming leaders.

I wasn’t phased much at first , but then my fiancee decided she did no want to be with me. I sold cars for a short time and was very good but I got sick and with no health insurance and It was just too much to struggle through. I then was out of work for almost two years with exception of army reserve which earned me basically nothing with child support. My credit and all my bills went to straight hell and soon I was homeless. I slept in my car. I then decided to ask reserve for release to go full time active which was a chore in itself. This was a mass of red tape and paperwork. I got in best shape possible and finally at age 42 went back in the army, the infantry no less. The question whether the Army is a profession becomes current hot issue to the society. The Army tried to demonstrate its development on profession by reviewing and refreshing the doctrine. However; there are documents that show the disagreement from people and they believe that our military is still inefficient organization when talking about our professional. The purpose of this paper is to support the idea of military is a professional organization. The Army is a profession because of three attributes; its expertise, trust, and values. These three are important keys to achieve and reach the profession.
