1. The purpose of this memorandum is to outline my view point on leadership. As a Drill Sergeant, it is my responsibility to transform civilians into well discipline, physically fit, and competent scouts. I am entrusted to uphold the Army standards, live the Army Values and Warrior Ethos, and instill Esprit de corps. 2. As stated in the Drill Sergeant Creed “I will lead by example, never requiring a Soldier to attempt any task I would not do myself.” The trainee’s first impression of the Army is through the Drill Sergeant. We must maintain a command presence through confidence, physical fitness, and military bearing. My responsibility to ensure that each trainee understands the block of instruction using the crawl, walk, run methods.
On a warm San Diego night in May of 1988, not smart enough to know whether I should be scared or excited, I embarked on my military career standing atop yellow footprints neatly painted on the asphalt. As an eighteen year-old kid entering recruit training, the finer points of leadership, at any level, had not yet piqued my curiosity. The drill instructors who supervised my training placed far different leadership expectations on me than what I will face as a colonel in the Air Force. Having learned a lot, good and bad, along the way, I realize that I must adapt to make good decisions and effectively lead at the senior level. As a Marine, it is imperative to have leadership skills along with being capable of working with others. This book was written to enhance the reader’s mentality of how the Marines operate. It informs those who are looking into the service, and provides an in depth look into the trials and tribulations it has been through—as well as conquered. This book substantially explains the vigorous training platoon 3086 went through in order to earn the title of being a Marine.
The person that is next in command after the Battalion Commander is the Executive Officer (XO). The executive officer’s purpose is to help the Battalion Commander to run the whole program. The XO will also help the Battalion Commander send orders to the rest of the staff and cadets. The XO must be hardworking, well-rounded, firm, and responsible. I think that the position of XO would be a good fit for me because I possess these characteristics. I hope that I will be able to implement new ideas such as new clubs and programs to give cadets more opportunities to be involved in JROTC. The NCO Creed states, “I realize that I am a member of a time honored corps, which is known as “The Backbone of the Army” (‘The NCO Creed’). That verse alone should be the most inspiring part that all Noncommissioned Officers should love to hear because it’s true in many aspects. The question to ask is, are we driving it in the right direction. There has never been a time in our history when Soldiers needed competent and strong leaders more than today. The social complications that our young Soldiers face are beyond what any generation before them has had to endure and learn and navigate. My leadership can expect a top tier performer who strives to be one of the most competent Non-commissioned Officer’s within the unit. I will do this by adhering to the regulations, unit sop’s and any other guidance which governs my section. I will ensure my soldiers do the same, holding them to strict but attainable standards and expecting nothing less. I wasn’t phased much at first , but then my fiancee decided she did no want to be with me. I sold cars for a short time and was very good but I got sick and with no health insurance and It was just too much to struggle through. I then was out of work for almost two years with exception of army reserve which earned me basically nothing with child support. My credit and all my bills went to straight hell and soon I was homeless. I slept in my car. I then decided to ask reserve for release to go full time active which was a chore in itself. Incorporating the principles of mission command by building cohesive teams through mutual trust, fostering an environment of shared understanding, and accepting prudent risk will make me an effective adviser to the commander, aid the staff during the operations process, and provide an example for Soldiers to emulate. Army leadership is more than hut, two, three, four, or mindless dictated leader-development programs. According to the Army’s leadership doctrinal manual, Field Manual (FM) 6-22, Army leadership is “the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation while operating to accomplish the mission and improve the organization”. The "be" of the model refers to the morals and qualities that shape character; as essential qualities, and the identity of the leader. The “know “refers to the knowledge that the leader should use in leadership, as well as knowledge about tactics, technical systems, organizations, management of resources, and the tendencies and needs of people. From an Army standpoint, leaders are not operational until they apply the skills and knowledge they possess, and, as with knowledge, leaders will learn more about leadership as they serve in different positions. The “do” refers to what a leader does or his or her actions that are directly related to the stimulus they have, the situation, and those around Them (“Be, Know, And Do”,
But it takes the whole team, as a unit, as one, to attain this goal. As I strive to be a better soldier and take the initiative to be a leader in today’s Army, I look a little closer at each of these values. There is always something to work on personally and objectively. To me, being late to PT wasn’t that big of a deal, but if I look at the whole picture, it is. If I look deeper as to what my actions are saying, I realize just how important appearance really is.
An officer's ability to lead his or her soldiers is contingent on the officer's knowledge of his soldier's skills. The US Army Officer is a professional, providing expertise, leadership, and an example for his soldiers to follow. Every soldier is a subject matter expert, trained in a specific competency. An officer, that soldier's leader, needs to be able to employ that soldier effectively. That means understanding a soldier's skills. An Officer needs to further have the ability to train that soldier outside of the US Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) schools. Imagine a panoramic view of an early morning sunrise over a military base. The sun is starting to burn off the morning dew. Formations of soldiers are starting to pop into the picture. Each soldier is in uniform dress sharp and moving as a single unit. Some formations are double timing moving out.
