The person that is next in command after the Battalion Commander is the Executive Officer (XO). The executive officer’s purpose is to help the Battalion Commander to run the whole program. The XO will also help the Battalion Commander send orders to the rest of the staff and cadets. The XO must be hardworking, well-rounded, firm, and responsible. I think that the position of XO would be a good fit for me because I possess these characteristics. I hope that I will be able to implement new ideas such as new clubs and programs to give cadets more opportunities to be involved in JROTC. Staff Sergeant (SSGT) Louis Moeller shaped me into the Recon Marine I wanted to be and the Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) that I am now. By embodying the Recon Creed and always setting the example, he made me want to be an NCO that my troops would look up to and want to follow. Even when not in charge he was constantly the one peers and junior Marines alike, turned to for guidance and inspiration. To this day, I still find myself asking “What would Louis do?” when confronted with a leadership dilemma.

Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose known present day as Fort Mose was established in 1738 by a Spanish governor, Manuel de Montiano, in St. Augustine. The leader of this fort was a slave by the name of Francisco Mendez, who helped in the defense of British in 1727, and was captured by the Spanish and was later given an unconditional freedom and freed. It was the first town to house free black slaves in the United States of America who came from Carolina plantations with the help of the Indians. In return for the slaves freedom, the Spanish had to convert their religion to Catholic as well as servicing the king as he sees fit.
The NCO Creed states, “I realize that I am a member of a time honored corps, which is known as “The Backbone of the Army” (‘The NCO Creed’). That verse alone should be the most inspiring part that all Noncommissioned Officers should love to hear because it’s true in many aspects. As a Non-commissioned Officer you can expect me to be a professional leader dedicated to taking care of soldiers, the mission, and the army way of life. You can expect me to use Army Regulations, Technical Manuals, and direct orders from my superiors as my guidance on what actions to take in each situation faced whether tactical or technical. I will not be afraid to make sound and timely decisions in the absence of my leadership’s orders. When left in charge I will take charge.

In the United States Army, there are two categories of rank structure, the enlisted corps and the commissioned corps. The enlisted corps within itself contains leaders, who are referred to as Noncommissioned Officers, or NCOs. These individuals, whose ranks range from Sergeant to Sergeant Major, are responsible implementing the guidance and command policies provided by the Commissioned Officers and commanders in their units. NCOs are also responsible for the welfare and training of junior personnel. The US Army provides regulations and manuals with step by step guidance for the most trivial of tasks, but it fails to spell out specific and concrete information on how to be an NCO. There are publications, such as “The Creed of the Noncommissioned Officer” and regulations on leadership, but they lack specificity and objective instruction for how to accomplish the aforementioned responsibilities of an NCO. The knowledge and skills of an NCO are instead acquired through training and experience, the products of which are NCOs of varying quality. A good NCO is one who knows and fulfills the written laws and regulations of Army doctrine, has the character of a good soldier and leader, and is able to strike a balance between written law and doing what is right even if the two seem to contradict one another.
The Army has four types of military briefings which Soldiers present to their commanders, fellow staff members, and/or other military or nonmilitary personnel. The four types of briefings are: 1) Information Briefing; 2) Decision Briefing; 3) Mission Briefing; and 4) Staff Briefing. Each have a purpose, and will help you in accomplishing the intent of conducting the brief. Each military briefing has a set of steps that need to be followed in order to make sure that the intent of the type of brief you are using is met. The intent of this paper is to describe each of the military briefings, and outline each of the steps for each of the military briefings; information, decision, mission, and staff.
In my current Army unit, we are often at the forefront of decisions that have a wide impact throughout the Army. Our office is responsible for the application of aviation assets to perform military intelligence functions. Within our office, we are responsible for designing the composition military intelligence aviation units, to include the amount of personnel required to fly on board the aircraft, the personnel required to process the data collected and the types of aircraft that are required to perform each mission. Strong, brave, and powerful are usually the words that come to mind when you think of a traditional war hero. In Tim O’Brien’s novel he uses war heroes that aren’t what people usually imagine when they think of a war hero. They are straight out of high school, and most of the soldiers in his novel are cowards. They are scared of going into the war and even when they have a chance to save one of their friends they just let them die. Not using traditional war heroes allowed Tim O’Brien to show that not all heroes are heroic and courageous, and that they were just normal people going into a war they didn’t understand.
My last position before coming to DLI was Brigade Commander. Without any doubt was the most rewarding experience in my military career. Because, I had the chance to lead in combat operations one thousand two hundred men divided between officers, Non Commissioned Officers and Soldiers in four battalions and a marine corps detachment. My Brigade is an Air Assault Army Unit which had the main effort against the FARC in the south of my country. However, the daily activities were difficult since I had to be available 24 hours per 7 days in a forward command post far away from my family.
