In the first semester of English 101 we were required to surpass three course goals, in which my senior class did. The course goals enabled my senior class to be able to summarize, respond and synthesize. In college students are asked to write many papers, one of them being a research paper. Students are asked to summarize the information and respond to it, therefore adding in their thoughts. I have learned and comprehend all of the essentials of writing a paper. I know the difference between all of the course goals and can explain them to great lengths. English 101 is one of the most common college courses in the world. When I enrolled in the class, I was bothered that I would have spend forty hours in a freshman writing class; along with at least another forty hours throughout the semester writing for the class. What surprised me, was that when I began writing my essays I was not annoyed or bothered; I actually enjoyed the assignments. Most importantly, throughout the course of the semester, I have become a better writer and have ultimately met the course goals of English 101.
The purpose of the English 250 course was to help students like myself realize the importance of all aspects of WOVE in their daily lives and future careers. In addition to writing papers, we practiced slideshow presentations, discussion panels, web design, and professional emails. The assignments and in-class activities for English 250 formed me into a skilled communicator in the WOVE areas of visual and oral communication, and I plan to continue practicing these skills through the communication that is necessary for future leadership opportunities.
Writing a college paper, document, or thesis will always revolve around a theme or a set of questions that need to be answered. How that paper is developed depends on the process used by the author as there are many different ways to approach a written assignment. The article by Catherine Savini, “Looking for Trouble: Finding your way into a writing assignment”, essentially tells us that in order to write an informational paper we must first look for the problem, detail questions related to the problem, and then try to provide some type of answer for the questions.
Before this quarter started I was fairly confident that I had what it took to ace English 101. After the first paper, I realized I was mistaken. Throughout this quarter I have had numerous problems with my writing that proved I needed to do a little more studying to help take my writing to the college level. Although I did not fail any of my papers, there was plenty of room for improvement. All the areas I needed to improve on are all areas that I think every English 101 student should know. I believe that every student at the college level should know how to cite sources correctly, know how to use good transitions, and know how to properly elaborate their examples.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Writing has never been a strength I have possessed. English 102 has been difficult and challenging for me because I have had to move past the high school level of a basic book report or a five paragraph paper that has narrowed my ideas of writing for many years. Putting on paper what my thoughts are in a way that is logical and accurate for what the assignment is asking has been hard for me this semester. My ideas are now more involved because I have learned through English 102 how to develop my writing skills in different formats, for example, in an annotated bibliography and a research paper. English 102 has taught me many things about writing like locating sources from the library and on line as well as continuing
Based on the term grads, effort, and attendance, I will make a 90 in English 110. I believe this will be true due to the progress I have made in my writing ability. When we started this class, I had little to no confidence in my ability to write well. Now that the class is at its end, I have a sense of assurance that I will be able to complete works in my future classes with little to no assistance from outside sources. The grades I did receive in this class never dropped below the 90s, but I do believe the effort and amount of checking I did on my composition three will be a metaphorical hole in my grads boat. I admit that I didn’t give it my all and have only myself to blame for whatever grade I do end up receiving on it.
In one semester of English 101 I have learned so many things about writing. I used to believe that writing was just putting words on paper, but have since learned that writing is much more than that, I now understand that writing is a way of exploring my mind and of making connections with other writers and readers. Over the course of the semester I have been learning to write in a way that uses the skills of reflection, critical thinking, and much more. I have used these skills to compose two academic essays that I am submitting in a portfolio to determine my final grade in English 101. Before I enrolled in English 101 there was a great deal of unanswered questions that I had regard to what it takes to end up distinctly as a successful writer. Throughout my high school experience, my English class never served as my strong point and constantly got myself frustrated and confounded. Throughout my companions, I heard positive input on English 101 class and I thought it was going to be solely about bettering our grammatical skills and composing various papers. Due to that I was exceptionally energized and excited for this class because I never had an instructor before who really helped me through my writing processes. But as English 101 class progressed on, it introduced me to different types of papers that I wasn’t confident enough to compose. From informative synthesis, summary, and peer review, I have learned how to appropriately and effectively compose each different kind of papers. As a result, this class was able to develop my abilities at an extremely high level where I could compose a good paper without much help.
As I read through “Revisualizing Composition” by several different authors, different ideas and thoughts came to my mind. For me, as being a student writer, I can understand why the data they gather is what they got. If I were to take the survey I would have put texting, lecture notes, lists, academic papers, research papers for the most frequently written genres I use. I am texting from the minute I wake up to the minute I go to sleep. I take notes every day in class. I make up to 10 lists a day of what I need to do, what homework I need to do, and so on. I have to write papers all the time for school. I want to become a scientist; to become a scientist means there will be many times I will have to write a research paper. For me I use texting, lecture notes, lists, academic papers, research papers for the most frequently written genres.
My composition has enhanced massively all through the semester. Before I took this class, I didn't generally know the best possible approach to compose a paper. Presently, I figured out how to approach composing a paper. I took in a few approaches to diagram my data. The thing that I discovered that has been most useful to me this year is the manner by which to compose a first draft. Some time recently, I would dependably compose a draft and roll out a couple of improvements to it and call it my last duplicate. During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really understood the significance of MAP. For this reason, my writing lacked clarity, organization, and my writings appeared less focused on the topics. As a result my research papers and essays did not flow as smoothly from one passage to the next. Furthermore, I was unaccustomed with the precise procedures used when writing an essay. For instance, my previous classes before college, although requiring a reference page, did not require me to include proper citations in my writings. After evaluating the quality of my writing toward the end of the semester, I recognized vast improvements in several areas of my writing. By concentrating on the beginning stages of my writings, I could distinguish ahead of time my audience and my message. As a result, my essays are clear, and I remain on topic. Over the past semester, I have found the most challenging part of this course to simply be the transition from high school composition classes to college. Because writing expectations are so different in college than in high school, even with AP and Dual Enrollment “college level” classes, I first found myself being overwhelmed with the pressure to write the perfect first draft. The pressure came from knowing how much a final draft of a paper contributed to my grade. This left me sitting in front of my computer for hours at a time with thoughts of what I wanted to say racing through my head, but unable to deliver these thoughts into organized, structured sentences. I learned, through writing my persuasive essay, that instead of trying to write the paper start to finish and already in its perfect form, it is easier for me to look at the paper through its different components and focus on them individually, then work to best organize my ideas fluently.
When I write a paper, I usually tend to write and edit at the same time. I could never continue writing without correcting my mistakes and making sure everything seems perfect. However, throughout this course, it made me realize that I should write everything on my mind, when writing a paper, just like I would in my notes. Later on, I should revise and edit my paper, making sure to cut back ideas and sentences that are off topic. Additionally, I’m the type of person that likes to write with no boundaries. Writing my research argument essay, made me realize that I could stick to a structure and yet bend the rules a little bit. When we started with this assignment, I was truly excited to research and write about a topic that I am passionate about. When we were asked to form an outline, I was bummed.
