Employee motivation seems to be a constant problem in the working world. It is true, not everyone is going to absolutely love their job and want to do it five out of seven days a week. Everyone has their bad days where all they want to do is just go home and get away from the office, which is okay. The problem with those people that dislike their job every single day, is that their dislike makes them completely unmotivated to work. This lack of motivation can then rub off on other employees in the office and it can be very hard to get people motivated unless they have the desire to be. I have noticed a few employees at my workplace that seem to be having trouble motivating themselves to do their job. People tend to get bored of doing the repetitive, small amount of tasks every single day. I know for myself, I prefer to have a variety of tasks expected of me. That is what helps the days go by quicker and helps to keep my mind focused all day. Those who aren’t given many tasks might feel as if their managers don’t feel as though they are qualified enough to do anything other than what they are assigned to now. That would be a major part of my lack of motivation, if my managers felt that way about me. Job enlargement isn’t always the answer for everyone. Some employees can feel less motivated being given more jobs, especially if the new jobs they are given are ones they don’t like. Managers need to pay close attention to their employees and make sure that giving them new tasks is the right answer to keeping them motivated. As Dr. Fischer stated in his presentation, “Part of having a successful team is giving each task identity and significance,” this helps to make employees feel that their job or task is important, which in turn helps with their motivation
Motivation in the workplace can be inspired on the team level or individual level. Both of these levels can be determined through the primary factors, intrinsic or extrinsic motivation.
There are people out there in the workforce that believe they are obligated to do their best at their job simply because that is what is expected from all of us as humans. On the other hand, there are those out there that want to only do as much as they can get away with doing. No matter which one of these employees you are or are working with companies and employer's need to understand the concept of motivation.
Employee Motivation: Employee Motivation is a process that starts with a physiological or psychological deficiency or need that activate a behavior or a drive that is aimed at a goal or incentive (Mitchell, 1982). This definition presupposes that to achieve their goals, individuals must be sufficiently stimulated and energetic. They must have a clear focus on what is to be achieved and must be willing to commit their energy for a long period of time to realize their goals and aims.
People spend an extensive part of their lives at work, so it is not astonishing that they expect to be rewarded and fulfilled with the job that they do. Motivation is concerned with why people do things as well as what drives them to act in a particular way. Understanding what motivates an individual is important in a workplace. Motivated employees are happier at work. They get more satisfaction from their work, they are absent less frequently, and work with more enthusiasm. This encourages them to contribute more, hence increasing the productivity in the organization. Unmotivated workers will not be as contented with their position in the work environment as motivated workers. The job might not be as important for them which may lead to a poor performance, which will lead to less efficiency and hence to poor productivity.
How do you get things done in an organization? First, you must have managers who can delegate to employees. Effective managers have the ability to get things done through other people. This is accomplished by motivating employees to accomplish tasks. A manager must be able to delegate these tasks to employees. The technique a manager uses to motivate employees to work for him, will either motivate or dissatisfy employees. Motivated employees will work with the manager to achieve company goals. Those employees who are dissatisfied will work against company goals.
Motivation is therefore the force that transforms and uplifts people to be productive and perform in their jobs. Maximising an employee's motivation is necessary and vital to successfully accomplish the organisation's objectives and targets. However this is a considerable challenge to any organisation's managers, due to the complexity of motivation and the fact that there is no ready made solution or an answer to what motivates people to work well (Mullins, 2002).

The reality of today’s economy have many people living paycheck to paycheck and sometimes working two and three jobs just to make ends meet. Although many people are grateful to have jobs, they feel that they are living in times of uncertainty and worry everyday if they will have jobs tomorrow. The stress of dealing with the rising cost of everything not only makes motivation more challenging, it has caused people to be more anxious and distrustful. Trying to keep employees motivated in these times of uncertainty is indeed a big concern.
